View Full Version : Snacking while cooking?
Please tell me I am not alone in snacking while I cook. Yes i munch away on the carrots that are for the salad, the cheese for the pasta etc. but it is even worse. Sometimes I put a handful of crackers or chocolate chips on the counter to nibble on. On occasion I have eaten so much I am not too hungry for dinner!! Anyone else get the munchies while cooking? If so what do you eat. Hey I confessed to chocolate chips!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif

I definitely nibble while cooking, usually from the food I'm making the meal from. I'm particularly bad about eating the cheese that's supposed to go in the meal. If I'm cooking in the middle of the day (on the weekends usually), I often get hungry and will dig into the hummus, peanut butter or (okay kima you confessed to the chocolate chips)... nutella!

Oh, cheese is definitely my nibble-while-cooking-downfall, even when it is NOT present in the recipe(s) I am making. Who the heck needs an excuse to eat cheese?? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Red pepper slices, dried fruit, nuts, chocolate chips are ingredients that dwindle during the cooking process as I munch and chop, munch and measure, munch and saute....

Funny you bring up chocolate chips ... I have been really into nibbling those lately. It's bad when I can't even have those in the house...
I don't generally snack when I cook. Often my kids are around, and I don't want them to snack (or get in the habit of putting food in their mouths while they are "helping" me cook) so I try to refrain.

I can't leave alone the parmasan cheese while I'm cooking - I just hack off a piece to suck on while I'm in the kitchen. Not good at the price they charge for it!!! I always cut up an extra carrot to eat also, and when that's gone hopefully dinner is ready. If not, better lock up the Oreos!
I confess! I, too, usually nibble while I'm cooking. Sometimes I eat so much of the "meal" ahead of time I have no appetite when the rest of the family sits down to eat!

I guess I should have put this on the "anal" thread....
It's entirely a mental block, but I can't let myself eat while I'm cooking, or I'll feel infinitely less satisfied about what I'm eating for dinner. My marinade http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif is my fuel.
I have, however, sometimes had to eat something because I was entirely too famished not to. Last night, in fact, I was so nauseous that I had a 1/2 T. of peanut butter so that I wouldn't pass out. But I very, very rarely snack on what I'm preparing.

My dear Mother - who is not much of a cook - snacks while she cooks dinner and since she talks alot - always has a mouth full of lettuce and/or carrots while she prepapres dinner. That image has convinced me that maybe I don't want to look like that while I cook - so I try not to snack while I cook. She always seems to choke on those carrots too - so I don't want to start choking while cooking either! :-)
But when I do snack - I love those mini chocalate chips! Yum! A slice of cheese is also a favorite. Of course chips and salsa with a beer while cooking is not bad either!

I don't normally snack while I'm cooking. If I am really hungry maybe some cheese.
One thing that bugs me when I'm cooking is when someone grabs what I've been chopping, etc. My ingredients start to get eaten...makes me crazy.

Sometimes I munch while cooking, but not always. If the meal contains cheese, I definitely do. And so does my fiance... he comes cruising through the kitchen while I'm cooking. Next time I look at the pile of grated cheese I've prepared for the recipe, it's dwindled by half!
Sometimes chocolate chips, together with a little spoonful of peanut butter (seems to give me the fastest recovery from that "I am soooo hungry" nausea that emilycat describes).
Funny, I love raw red pepper, broccoli, carrots, etc. as a snack. But when I'm prepping the veggies for a meal, I don't nibble on them.

French bread dipped in olive oil and cracked pepper is my downfall. I serve it at most meals, so it is always laying around...begging me to have just one more slice...

I often snack while cooking -- a bit of cheese, some pretzels, black olives if I'm using them in a recipe. I try not to snack, but the aroma from what I'm preparing makes me hungry!
Unlike most people, I wish I did snack more. My digestive system and appetite are in bad shape, and I often feel as though snacking will make me ill. However, when I make any kind of cookies, I always love to eat the dough. I also like to lick the batter from the bowl after making a sour cream pound cake or chocolate cake. I love the taste of raw flour. If someone were to ask me, I would say plain white flour is my favorite food!

I sort-of snack while cooking. I usually don't have recipes - so I taste along the way to make sure it's OK. I usually end up tasting alot & get somewhat full by dinner.

You're the one with the knife! Retaliate!!!
I only snack if I'm absolutely starving, and the prep is going to take a while. If I don't, then I'm always tempted to just eat a bowl of cereal instead of a "real meal."

I'm not a big snacker, unless as Emily said, I'm famished. I often start preparing dinner after a work out, so that's when I'll have something to eat just to keep me on my feet! But I try not to make it mindless nibbling that will ruin my appetite.
