OK, I guess I'm just real stupid - I don't know what "Louisiana brand hot sauce" the CL folks mean in this recipe - I just can't imagine 1/2 C beer mixed with 1/2 C TABASCO (which is what I would think they meant). This is for 4 fillets (6 oz each) and the marinade is discarded after use. What do you think is the hot sauce used in this recipe?

I can't imagine 1/2 cup of Tabasco either... a similar issue was discussed in the attached thread... perhaps it will help?

I think they are refering to something like "Frank's Louisiana RedHot". It's not as hot as Tabasco and contains more vinegar and salt. This is the stuff that is used in a lot of Buffalo wing recipes. Remember, since you are using it to dip the fillets, you won't actually be consuming 1/2 cup of the stuff!
Hope this helps,
Renée

Ok, I did it ! I used tabasco in this recipe. Yup 1/2 cup Bud light, 1/2 cup tabasco.
I really liked it. The fish was really spicy(of course). It had that vinegary, signature tabasco scent. I think you would have to be a real lover of the stuff to like it that way. The only thing that would make this recipe perfect is a crispy crust. It looks crispy in the picture it was probrably an error on my part.

I made this and had the same question! I decided to use Tabasco sauce but only used a few tablespoonfuls because 1/2 cup scared me off. The fish came out well, but it was very bland. Go figure!! I had to serve it with tartar sauce to make it more exciting. If I made it again, I think I would still be afraid of the 1/2 cup hot sauce...

Kim,
too be honest about the Bud Light , the ex boyfriend forgot to take it along when he got kicked to the curb.....
being Canadian I got Labatt's Blue in the fridge, but I have been to Shiner to the brewery. I have to agree with you, it's good stuff!

Made this the other night. I used 4 filets and only made half of the marinade. For the hot sauce I used a brand called La Valentina, a propular brand from Mexico and readily available in Dallas. While this was very good, I preferred the oven fried catfish from the August issue. I think the cheese in the August recipe makes the crust crispier.
Made the July catfish several weeks ago and followed the directions exactly. Yes, it was spicey, but not as spicey as you would think. Husband loved it, so did SIL. Did not marinate daughters because she is nursing our adorable grandson.
