Since you mentioned the summer market on Ashford-Dunwoody last week, I'm so excited about going this weekend (although it would be a supplement to Harry's rather than a replacement http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif )-- did you make it there? What did you think? Thanks! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Listen to this-- I get up early, after having had a late evening on Friday http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif , and I get there at 9 am. The signs say it opened at 8:30.

There was no fresh produce! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif

And noone to ask either. It was like a flea market, antiques, jewelry, etc. But I just wanted some good, fresh produce. So I went to Harry's in a Hurry instead which is fine but not the same thing.

But... I heard that there is a small farmer's market in the Morningside neighborhood. I am thinking about venturing there on Saturday, wanna come with?

Yeah, I would like to go! -- what time were you thinking? Is this over in Va-Hi?

Yes, it is the one in Va Hi.

I want to go early to get the best stuff, I will find out what time they open and we'll go from there if that is cool with you.

I feel alittle like I'm busting in on your email but it's on the board so . . . . I'd love to see a post about how you liked the market in VA Highlands. I'm going to try the State Farmer's Market in Forest Park, may not be this weekend but the following. Happy vege shopping! Heather

Heeter, you are welcome to join in the discussion! And that Forest Park market is on my list to get to this summer!

Emily, the market opens at 8:30. Do you want to email me personally so we can work out the details?

Bumping up for the review! What did both of you think?

I couldn't go this Saturday morning http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif , so I let Dana be the guinea pig -- I'll try it out next Saturday depending on her review http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

What do they say about the road to h*ll.. paved with good intentions?

I didn't go to the Morningside Market on Sat. My boss who lives in that area said it might not be worth it to drive all the way there for $12 of produce, and I kept that in mind as I tried to get up on Sat. morning.

So maybe another time...

BUT- I did hear about this new market that is similar to Whole Foods-- in Alpharetta by Haynes Bridge/Nesbit Ferry Rd. Fresh.. something. I will try to check that out this week and let you know about it. Have any of you heard of this new joint?

The Fresh Market??? You mean upstate SC has had a store LONG before Atlanta!!! Hey!!! I feel special! :-) Actually, the Fresh Market is a really great store. Yes, as someone mentioned, it can be really expensive. It's not where I'd do my daily/weekly shopping. BUT...for my area in particular, if you're looking for something unusual, this is the place to go. I think of the Fresh Market as an "experience". It really plays with your senses when you go in there....they have music playing (either New Age or classical), the smell of the coffee and other items is wonderful, some taste-testing now and then....and just overall, a nice experience. Anytime someone on the BB mentions an item they haven't been able to find, I've usually been able to find it at our Fresh Market (sherry vinegar comes to mind as a recent hard-to-find item).

I like the Fresh Market and wander over there probably once a month or so. But to be honest?? I wish Harry's Market would decide they need a store up here!!!!!

Hungry,

That's not it.... Whole Foods is the same exact thing as Fresh Fields, just a different name in a different region I guess.

I may be wrong but I got the feeling it is an independently owned market.

I've heard of it and I think it's called the Fresh Market. The write up I read in the paper indicated high prices. I will say now that I am not working in the Sandy Springs area, I miss a vegetable stand I use to go to at the corner of Johnson Ferry Rd and Sandy Springs Circle. It's in the parking lot of the Brooklyn Grill, if you are familiar with that area. Great tomatoes, silver queen corn, lady peas, squashes of all kinds, and others. If you write a check it's to Sarah. I've really never gotten produce there that wasn't great.

Heather-- when do they have that vegetable stand on Johnson Ferry? Weekends? Every day? It is not so far from my house and also, on the way home from the gym.

Thanks!

I want to know too! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif It's not far from my house, either.
Oh, and I found a great little stand near where I work -- it's on Lower Roswell, right off Johnson Ferry -- I go sometimes after I lift weights during lunch. Right now they have the most gorgeous tomatoes ever. And the corn is to die for. I've been picking up ears occasionally and eating them at work. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Emily- where is that market? Is that on the corner where they sell pumpkins for Halloween and across the street is Kmart and Michaels?

And also-- how are you cooking corn at work?!?!

emilycat
06-26-2001, 08:42 AM
Hm. It is on a corner, but I found it just recently, so I'm not sure about the pumpkins -- I don't seem to remember any large shopping centers across the street, either. If you're coming down Lower Roswell from Delk and Terrell Mill in Marietta, it's on the left about a block before Lower Roswell intersects with Johnson Ferry. If you're coming up Johnson Ferry from Sandy Springs, you'd turn left onto Lower Roswell, and then it's about a block down on the right. Do those cryptic directions make any sense at all?

Oh, and I love to eat fresh corn raw -- it's so delicious, so no cooking required http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Am I the only one who won't eat corn on the cob in public because I make such a mess? This sounds awesome, Emily - and I adore corn in any way - but how would it look, munching on a big ole ear of corn in the ladies room? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

It's open, I think, 7 days a week - I use to go on my lunch hour. They were pretty honest as well if they didn't think i.e. "the watermelons were sweet enough". I use to ask questions like that all the time. They have alot of shelled peas as well, in a refrigerator in the gazebo.

Makes me want to go.

On a slightly (ok, very)unrelated matter-Harris Teeter is going out of business. I heard on the news last night everything is marked 20 percent off!

I heard that they were bought by Kroger. Is Kroger closing those stores, or just changing the name?

Let me jump in here and cry. My favorite grocery store is Harris-Teeter!!! They're closing all 5 of the stores in this area and they're being bought by Bi-Lo. I hate Bi-Lo!!! I know I know....Bi-Lo is the HOMETOWN store..(literally...their headquarters is about 5 miles from my house), but I'm so disgusted!!!! The article I just read said that different stores were being bought by different grocery store lines. Most of NC is staying intact. Where will I find the most wonderful rotisserie turkey in the world?? Or the HT brand marinated pork tenderloin? Or the fantastic produce?!?!? Arrgghhh!! Someone hand me a Kleenex.

Actually....I guess someone needs to hand me a cooler!! In addition to my every few months trip to Harry's in Atlanta (2.5 hours), now I'm going to have to drive to Charlotte!!! (2 hours in the OTHER direction!!!) It's a good thing gas prices are dropping!!

Leanne-Good question! My sister and I were trying to figure out if they would switch the Dunwoody Harris Teeter over to Kroger, which would be a little odd, seeing as how a Kroger is already across the street. My vote is for a farmer's market!

I had to add - when I did work in Sandy Springs and shopped at the vegetable stand, I use to cut the corn off the cob, chop a fresh tomato, salt & pepper and alittle butter and nuke for a minute. One of my favorite lunches!

Wow I will have to check it out, thanks!

Would you happen to know how late they are open? Is it all summer long?

Hey Atlanta Ladies: I want to go with you when you go the State Farmer's Market. Can you wait to go on a Saturday later in July or in August. We are going to Switzerland next week for 2 weeks and I can't go until we get back. I'll drive!

The ironic thing is that in Winston-Salem, NC all of the Kroger stores were bought out by Harris Teeter. The Teeter has some really great stores around here, too (Raleigh) but our Krogers are totally gross. Funny how one chain can differ according to the state. Oh, as far as Kroger buying out a store near an existing Kroger, they'll probably just let the old Teeter sit there- that's what Teeter did when they bought out a Kroger across from an existing Taj Mah Teeter.

I think they would have to do something - I'm sure the land/rent is too expensive to let it just sit there. I vote for a farmer's market too. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

On the Farmer's Market Topic -- have any of you guys seen the July issue of Atlanta Magazine? It's the Food Issue, and there's a section in there devoted to listings and descriptions of about 20 different ethnic and fresh produce markets! Very cool information -- I may be taking some trips this weekend. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Or what about on Holcomb Bridge? The Harris Teeter went up a block from the A&P, which then closed, but then they put that huge, sparkling Kroger up about 2 miles down the road.

Who knows? But I would vote for a Farmer's Market too!

Emily, we posted at the same time. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
I saw that article this weekend-- those markets are on Buford Hwy, the ones I had mentioned to you before!

I can't believe this has so many posts - but here's something to add to the mix to those who want to visit the state farmer's market. An article in the atlanta paper about two years ago told about a couple who went to the state farmer's market each year, buying bushels of vegetables at their peak and then driving to Dawsonville to the cannery there for their produce to be canned inexpensivly. I've never been to the cannery and that's about all I can remember of the article but, it always sounded like fun to me and being able to have all the canned vegetables to boot.
