Christmas in July - anyone up for a swap?

I never organized a swap before so I'll defer to you guys who have if I'm doing this 'wrong'...

but I was thinking we kill ourselves in December with cookie & gift swaps, so why not do one now in the middle of nothing?

We could do a kitchen gadget swap, cookbooks, etc; I liked last December's my house to yours... who's in?

I had been thinking the same thing and nearly posted to organize something. It seem like time to strike up another swap. I got too busy to organize it, but I'd join in.

I'm not harboring a grudge -- life is too short to waste it worrying about anyone bizarre enough to cheat someone out of $30 or so.

However, I participated in the last swap, sent the package and received nothing -- no thank you, no acknowledgement, no email -- cone of silence. :D

At that time, there was discussion about how to avoid this -- As I recall, there were a variety of suggestions including length of time on the board and number of posts -- or a combination.

Forestalling the inevitable people who feel like they would be excluded, this WAS NOT meant by anyone to mean someone who had been around for awhile and just wasn't a frequent or prolific poster. It really was meant to include those people who have been a part of the community and aren't completely unknowns or newbies. My particular newbie had posted 3 times I believe -- At time time I was disappointed in being paired with someone who was a complete unknown/outsider but it never entered my mind that anyone would be so hard up for whatever gizmos/cookbooks/goodies I included.

I have no vested interest in the outcome because I am too busy to participate -- I just wanted to put this out there at the top so people can include some form of protection. Perhaps if you do allow newbies/unknown factors to participate, you pair them with each other so they assume the risk and also allow others to have the psychological satisfaction of being paired with someone who has some kind of relationship with the community.

I now back off and wait for the inevitable misunderstandings. :p

As for "rules" I know of people that have been burned and have not participated in any more. I don't know how to fix it. I have participated in all swaps I have seen since I have been on this board and have been happy each time and I love getting to know people a little better. I am a moderate poster, but I don't feel like I know anyone all that well and I enjoy PM'ing for swaps since I rarely PM or receive them. I can't say that it's only newbies that don't send things though because I remember talk of active posters that never sent items, whether it's a swap or a purchase from some of those things we have done. My feelings are - Swap at your own risk.

The planner (Peweh in this case) will collect all the names and then pair us up. You then contact your swap partner...talk about what you like/dislike and mail them a package with cool swap items. There usually is a dollar limit on the package as well ($20 - $30) :cool:

As for dates, I was thinking I'll post the paired up names towards the end of next week, which would give people about a week to sign up. Then maybe we could look to have our packages out in early August?

I'm open to suggestions for themes, or we could always just trust our 'Foodie' instincts. I know in the past, people stick to about a $20-30 budget.

Oh and as Blazedog was kind enough to remind us, sometimes people sign up for swaps and then for miscellaneous reasons, don't follow through. Understandably things do come up but please be sure to notify me or your assigned swap partner of you need to drop out so we can make new arrangements before a one-way package goes out.

I think you're ok- 3 years and 11 months is a long time :D :D :D.

Usually new stuff targeted at the swapee. Sometimes homemade or from the farmers market, sometimes things that represent your region (foods, souvenirs, cookbooks,) usually anything that you think the other person would like. I've had a lot of great swap partners. I love shopping for my partner.

A good way to ship your package is to use the flat rate box from the Post Office. It's about $8 and they have two different sized boxes. You can cram a whole lot into them.

It depends on the person...it usually is new stuff when I buy but I think I may have had some stuff that was 're-gifted' to me. I didn't care...it was still brand new to me :)

I was thinking if the assignments go out this Friday, people could start mailing their packages during the week of 8/6, that would give everyone 2 full weeks/weekends to get stuff together. I'm sure if you need a little more time, you can work it out with your swap partner in advance. Please join if you can!

Unless anyone has a theme idea, the theme seems to be "trust your foodie instincts!" PM your partner, get a feel for what they like, and send some treats. You know, stuff you'd like to get, maybe Farmer's markets jams & soaps, a regional or homemade specialty, gift some recipes etc. Typical swaps usually range $20 to $30 and someone posted about the flat rate Post Office boxes that are great to ship in.
