Okay, so my new apartment has a little garden space that I'm very excited about. There are a few things already planted, some of which I can identify but some I can't, so can anyone help?

Here's a stab:
1. Onions?
2. Some type of pea (given the leave shape, the climbing tendrils and the fencing behind for them to climb on)?
3. Look like some type of lily
4. No clue!

Mcgeiger: :D I missed that! And, how can you not know? I was counting on bringing you over to teach me what to do with them! :p
Beth: Thank you! I suspected the first one might be onion or garlic but I'm such a novice I wasn't sure. The second I had guessed bean but I'd be happier with peas.

#3 are definitely irises, and that non-growth spot in the middle of the clump says that they are ready to be dug up and divided soon (in the fall). Is # 4 a recent photo or a month or more ago? I agree that it looks like lilies but they would normally have more greenness and a few flowers by now.
How fun to have a garden full of suprises!

All the pictures were taken today (I just started moving in yesterday). I'm not sure how well everything has been watered lately as the apartment has been vacant for at least a few weeks so maybe that's why they aren't very green. Thanks for the tip on dividing the irises, I'll be sure to figure out how to do that come fall. I love irises so I'll be happy to spread them into other parts of the garden for sure.

Unfortunately the big stuff is still at the old place so I'm still hanging there for a few more days but it does feel good to see it happening. The roomie was gone all last week and it was so peaceful around here. I even got some good quality time with my cousin (the other roomie) and talked with her about what has happened and the hurt and such. She has told me even more of the things the roomie tried to do to me that my cousin convinced her not to. Cousin and I will be able to repair our relationship thank goodness. I shared Little BoPeep's gift idea with her and she thought it was hysterical.
Milo is a little freaked right now but we've moved so many times (he's lived 11 places in the 9 years I've had him) that he'll be fine. I've learned with him that I just need to get his litter box set up, show him his food and water and have my sheets on my bed and he's good to go. At least he won't have to drive across the country this time.
Okay, now that I've hijacked my own thread.... :p

#3 are definitely irises
That is what I meant. Irises. Don't know why I said lilies. Knew they looked very familiar, but the wrong name popped in my head!

what fun you'll have unwrapping the mysteries of your new garden!!! i LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it :D
#1 -- good guess onions but i see the dead bloom and it also reminds me of my daffodil plants (i know onions can flower as well so i'm really not sure)
#2 ??
#3 bearded iris (LOVE these!) wonder what color you have?? just dig the large clump of bulbs out, separate them then replant.
#5 definitely looks like mint - clip off a stem and smell you'll know for sure (or maybe you've already done this!). mint is VERY invasive so if you don't want it all over your garden, now would be a good time to pull it.
have fun.

I know! I was so excited when I found this place. Its a small little group of 8 apartments that are privately owned and the lot has a bit of yard and then one apartment (mine :D ) has a little garden plot.
Deb - Do I wait until the green leaves die back to separate the irises? And yes, I alread touched the mint and smelled, its definitely mint which is so exciting to me. There is quite a bit, I might dig it up, replant in a pot and then sink the pot in the garden to contain it.
I may try to pick up some basil at the Farmers Market this week and plant that in a pot so that I can bring it inside at frost time. I love basil.
Thanks everyone for your help!

Welcome to the new gardeners' club, Robyn, and congratulations on the move!
It would be easier to stop at a greenhouse or nursey and buy a three inch pot or two with roots and repot them in something larger. (Unless, of course, your farmers market sellers have it that way!)

Yep, the farmer's market sells herbs, flowers, even tomato plants already going pretty well. I picked up three basil plants for my aunt a couple weeks ago for $3! I always feel better supporting the local farmers and honestly don't know where a local nursery is around me.
Trust me, there are more questions to come for sure. I need to start researching how to care for these pumpkins.

#4 looks like some sort of ornamental grass...

# 1 are onions
#2 are beans, Blue Lake which is what I have planted now, that I didnt get much this year
You are going to have your hands full with mint, its an invasive plant that spreads like wildfire and impossible to kill.

The last pic looks to me to be a type of weed that grows around here AND produces those green pumpkin type gourds. If nothings been watered in awhile it could be this weed. Take one of them to the local nursery, wouldn't hurt.

Pic #1 are called Walking or Egyptian onions. They were all over one of our lanscape beds when we moved in last year and I had a heck of a time figuring out what they were. They are called Walking onions because the tops grow heavy and are weighted down so they lean over to the ground where they deposit new "seeds" (kind of like a slinky). They WILL go everywhere - I pulled all of mine out and put them in the field where they can go crazy on their own - they do look cool though. You are supposed to be able to eat the tops like green onions and the bottoms like small white onions - I never ate a lot of them, found the green parts too tough.
Too much info?? :D

Robyn--
I always divide irises in July/August--which means I need to get going, as soon as it cools down a smidge. :o Here's a website that explains all about it...
http://www.ipm.iastate.edu/ipm/hortnews/1993/6-30-1993/iris.html
Also, I'd keep an eye on the mint--I let ours do its thing last year, and it has completely taken over part of the garden.

edited to add my congratulations on your new apartment. I'm sure you'll enjoy the privacy and peace.

Thanks Michelle, I've bookmarked that site!
I plan to dig up the mint pretty soon and do some transplanting to pots. I know it can take over and don't want that to happen. Its unfortunate that I'm getting ahold of this garden this late in the season because there is a lot of open space that I wish had plants in it. Oh well, I guess it will give me something to plan for next year.

Hi Robyn and congrats on the move!!!!!
#4 looks like it could be Lemongrass. Here is a link to a site with a photo and some info:
Lemongrass (http://www.motherherbs.com/lemon-grass.html)
You can smell it in the leaves when you rub them.
Have fun with your garden!! (I am in a hotel right now traveling home after being away for 2 weeks and I cannot wait to see what is new in my garden!!)
