Tie Dye question - vinegar to set colors?

We have fabulous tie dye shirts that we made at camp...I thought there was some rule about adding vinegar to the water when we wash them for the first time, but didn't find any info on the Rit site.

Does anyone here know how much to use, or have a better idea? We're going to wash them together - no other items in the load - but I want to keep the colors from fading too much if possible.

Adding one cup of WHITE vinegar to a full washer tub of water BEFORE adding the clothes will help to set the dyes.

I found this information by googling "set colors in fabric". The website states that this used to be effective, but today's dyes are much hardier, and don't run as easily. I think this will still work on your tie-dyed shirts, though... we used to use these on Benneton rugbys when the DD's were teens, and it did work!
