Hi Texans...I'm spending a week in Navasota next week with an equine vet clinic. I'm flying into San Antonio and driving to Navasota...Google Maps tells me that it's 4.5 hours, but I could have sworn it was not that long!
Am I confused? Or is Navasota/College Station really that far away from San Antonio?
I guess it doesn't really matter, since I'm going no matter what, but it would be nice to have some sort of timeframe!
Thanks in advance!

Well, it's a little closer than that. You won't be driving 55. :D

Are you going through Austin? Depending how well that area is moving, I'm roughly guessing 4 hours.

Did you know in our area of the state, the highway speed limit is now 80mph.....Is it like that anywhere else in Texas?
It wouldn't be as far from Houston. I'm thinking it's more like an hour to an hour and a half? That could be from the house -- in which case it could be closer to two hours from the airport. I could check with DH in the morning 9he has to get up in a few hours to take DS to the airport, so they are both asleep now). His office is not far from the airport and he has to go to Navasota on business. I'm sure he knows how long it ususally takes him -- if flying into Houston would be an option for you. Austin should also be a bit closer than San Antonio.
If you can't change the flight, you can think of it as taking the scenic route. Maybe we can come up with some exciting road stops for you. ;)

Not around here. I think most freeways are 60/65, but I've noticed more areas coming down to 55.

i used to live in corpus christi. there was a two-lane "highway" (i mean one lane in each direction) with no shoulder, no center turning lane or anything, and the speed limit was 75! and people liked to ride their bikes there. scary.

Rebecca,
It is not 4 1/2 hours from SA to Navasota. SA to College Station is 3 hours, and at most, it is another 25-30 minutes from CS to Navasota. I drove that CS/SA trip hundreds of times in college with DH to visit his parents (on the way to Del Rio), and I drove the CS/Navasota trip hundreds of times in college with DH to visit MY parents (on the way to Houston). :)
At most, it will be 3 1/2 to 4 hours (TOPS), but most definitely not 4 1/2. And no, you would not be driving through Austin.

Awesome. Thanks.
I know it's closer to fly to Houston, but I decided to fly to SA (the more expensive flight, too!) because DF's parents live there and are lending me a car for the week. Otherwise, I'd have to rent a car or be stranded in Navasota for a week with no reliable way to get to a grocery store.
Either way, it's a lot of travel, since I'm flying from Providence that morning. I do like driving, though, so that will make up for the flying part!

I agree with Eva that it should be closer to 3 1/2. We're about 2 hours from San Antonio and just over an hour from Navasota...what route did Google give you?

Google is routing me through Austin via 35, then 71 through Bastrop, then 21 through Caldwell to College Station, then Hwy 6 to Navasota.
What do you think? I know Austin traffic can be a nightmare, but it will be Sunday afternoon, so maybe not so bad?

Don't go through Austin! We were there a week ago on Sunday and I-35 was at a standstill as we were coming up on 71. I'd take 1604 to I-10 to 71 then 21 though I can ask DH if there's a better route.

Thanks, Sneezles--I just Mapquested it, and it has me going on 10 all the way to 159 and up to Navasota, so that looks to be the most direct. Thanks!

Beth- I'm pretty sure this depends on if the freeway runs through city limits. In the county it's a higher limit than here in Houston.

Rebecca,
If you want an alternate route, you can also take I-35 north to San Marcos, where you would then exit at Bastrop/Luling take Hwy. 21 all the way to Bryan (just be careful to pay attention to the signs to stay on 21, because there are a couple of turns), then Hwy. 6 south to Navasota. That will take you through Bryan/CS if you have any reason to go there. It's the straightest shot from SA to CS, but since you have to then head south to Navasota, your I-10 to 159 is also a pretty straight shot to Navasota. That I-10 stretch is long and BORING, though. This is the more scenic route. :)

If you take the I-10 route....exit in Schulenburg and go to the Smokehouse and pick up some of the best Jerky you'll ever eat!!!
