View Full Version : Help us name our kitten!

We've just adopted an adorable white and taupe seal-point kitten that is clearly part siamese. She's as cute as can be, and if I could get her to slow down long enough, I'd take a picture--but all the pics I've taken so far are just blurs of color!

We're having a hard time coming up with a name. Many, many have been suggested and tossed out. Right now the top three contenders are Mulan, Dumpling, and Sasha.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

In Chinese the prefix 'Kuei' (koo-WAY) means 'precious' Kuei-Fei (koo-WAY Fay) means 'precious jade'.

For myself, I like 'Sadie', the name of the Siamese cat in the comic strip in Cat Fancy magazine.

Congratulations!!!!! As the proud mommy of 5 kitty cats here are some suggestions from my 11 yr old dd and me: Macy, Marley, Sasha, Riley, Chloe, Daisy, Shelby, Zoey, Bailey, Ginger, Sheba and Abby. We're still brainstorming....

First pet?

If so, I'd recommend a theme that you can expand upon...

For instance, my wife named her cats after peanuts characters (Lucy, Shroeder, Franklin, etc), and dogs after planets/mythology (Mars, Pluto, Neptune, etc).

I know a guy who names his dogs after his favorite Quarterbacks.

It's tempting to go with the Chinese angle, but seems cliche. As are names based on the color (Snowball and it's ilk)

Tell us some more about it's personality and or quirks.

Robyncz
07-20-2006, 03:32 PM
We don't know too much about her personality yet. But she's very energetic and playful, being a kitten, you know! And she has a crazy-long monkey tail. It even has a little bend at the end that makes it look prehensile.

My girls are leaning strongly towards Sasha right now--for no reason other than they like how it sounds. We'll have to see where they stand tomorrow.

Keep the ideas coming!

We took in a feral (and were able to adopt him out) and he looked very Siamese with the dark face markings.
DH named him Latte (I would have picked cappucino).
Of course, when we spotted him on the deck, I nicknamed him "dirty-face" not knowing we'd catch him and tame him.
GOD I MISS THAT KITTEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hurry and take pics!! I need a kitten fix :p

My favorite pet names are always the ones that are funny (I see LOTS of pets too ;) ):

Killer the 7 lb Maltese

Wimpy the 80 lb pit bull

Lil' Sh*t (real name) the cat

Miss Fuzzy Butt the cat

Blackie the white cat

Superman the girl cat

I like "Kitten" as a name, but my girls aren't having it!

Also, I'm not a complete geographical idiot, but I didn't know that Siam was once Thailand. So, all the Chinese stuff is out!

white and taupe, hmmm? very 'fashionable' colors. Fendi? Hermes? Dior? :) just kidding, they're all M names anyway.

Siamese, hunh? how about Anna, for Anna and the King of Siam, aka, The King and I. isn't Siam now Thailand? (geog. is not my strong suit). then you'd have some really cute pun-ny choices, like anything beginning with "Pad," thinking of the sweet pads on their feet...

i really wanted to name our Pekingnese "Dim Sum," which is Mandarin (?) for "Heart dot." ironically, at SO's insistence -- but b/c I said that, at 7 weeks, he looked like he had the wisdom of the ages in his huge eyes--- he got named "Einstein." think about it... Dim Sum...Einstein... :p so then, naming the kitten "Edison" was a no-brainer.

ETA: just remembering the famous Siamese cat song from Lady and the Tramp ("WE are Siamese if you please/We are Siamese if you don't please...) didn't they have names???? come to think of it, "Siam" itself would be a beautiful and unique name.

The lone female of my 5 feral kitties is the only one that looks Siamese.
I've named her Phantom-Bandita because she is black/white with a phantom-of-the-opera face mask, but secretly, I call her my Spider-monkey because of her slinky body, long, long legs and long toes :p

My DH wants nothing more than to name a pet Cracker (I vetoed it for the puppy, but might be cute for a kitten). I like food type names, like Ritz, Saltine, Mozzarella, Couscous, Gouda, etc. Apparently I need cheese and crackers for dinner tonight.

I really like wallycat's suggestion of Latte, or along those lines you could also do Mocha. Other names that come to mind:

Mia
Willow
Sage
Azure
Mushroom (if she is more taupe than white)
Sally
Annie
Bella

There are lots of pet name websites; there may even be one for Siamese cats. Can't wait to see her picture.

Well, we already have a Mia, so that's out! But Latte has come up today. So far they're sticking with Sasha, but we're going to revisit in the morning.

I haven't gotten a really good photo yet, but I'll try to upload what I have. . .

Who said I was trying to come up with a Thai name?

China was such a superpower that it influenced all the cultures around it. That's why I pointed out the meaning of 'Kuei'.

Since the kitten's a mixed-breed how do you know that it doesn't have some Chinese cat in it?

Girls:
Lucy
Daisy
Grace
Cleo (see pics below)

Boys:
Levi
Oscar

Otis
Howard
Louie

Here is Cleo. She is part Siamese. She is fluffier than your kitty but yours still looks like a Cleo to me ;)...maybe it is the blue eyes! :

Oddly enough, they came through this time.

What a darling!

I think her markings ae what are called 'lynx point' (marked like a Siamese but with tabby-like markings). I show cats as a hobby, but they're Burmese and Bombay (solid colors). I'll ask this weekend and see what the real description is. It's either lynx point or colorpoint, though the colorpoint is supposed to have green eyes, come to think of it.

She's a little beauty!

I liked Bamboo, too.

BUT, the girls decided definitively this morning that her name would be Jade. And we told them that if they could come to an agreement, they could name the cat.

I was strongly in favor of Willow. Sigh.

So, we have a blue-eyed kitten named Jade!

Hm. Kuei-Fei means 'pecious jade' (I love Chinese names!)

Why not Jada, by the way? Like Jada Pinkett? (I know a gorgeous lady cat with that name.)

I like Willow too.

Jade is a fine name, but I have a question... I am (obviously) not a cat person, so here goes.... Can't you call a cat anything you want? I've never heard of a cat that answers to its name... ;) So you could still call her Willow, yes?

Robyncz
07-21-2006, 09:41 AM
Every cat I've ever had (granted, that's a grand total of 3) has recognized its name and come when it was called.

I went online and learned that there is in fact a gem called blue jade that is exactly the color of her eyes. So her "fancy" name is now Blue Jade, and her "regular" name is Jade. (Remember, we're dealing with 5 and 6 year old girls here. . .)

All of my cats ALWAYS knew their names.

I was fearful with 5 new 6-week old kittens they would not get to know their names, but they do.
Each time I pet them and handled them, I whispered their individual names to them.
They can all be outside and if I call them by name, they come (when they're hungry :p ).
I was never a cat person either till I met DH, but cats are very smart animals--whether we like them or not :p

Because I had to ask the question ;)

DD1 has cats, but I never saw them answer to or know their names. I'm afraid that's my total exposure to cats! DGM had one when I was a child, but I learned fear/dislike of cats from her, so have never willlingly been around them since then.

Oh! Dopey me! :D

great photos, all...it's not easy to get a good shot of a young cat, i know that well enough.

Jade is a terrific name. my cats all knew theirs...if i call, "Edison!," in a sing-song tone, if he's anywhere within earshot, he replies/comes. but they all also seem to respond to, "here, kitty kitty!"

<sniff> i want a kitten, too, and another dog...but our 2 get along so well now, i'm afraid to upset the balance.

i checked. it is Thailand now, was Siam then.

enjoy those babies! i envy you all.

Robyn, I love the name! And she's such a cutie. Hope you and your family have lots of fun with her!

I thought I'd also comment that my cat most definitely knows and answers to her name. She likes to play in the backyard at night but when we are ready for bed, I just open the door, call her name, and she comes running. Of course, our cat also thinks she's a dog.... :p

Incidentally, I thought I'd mention my pet-peeve of people who are NOT Chinese giving their pets (kids, whatever) Chinese names or getting tattoos of Chinese characters, etc. (do you ACTUALLY know what it says, or are you just taking the tattoo artist's word for it???). And this is not limited to Chinese. I wouldn't give my pet a Russian/Irish/Spanish/whatever name because I am NOT any of those things. Like my friend who gave her son this great Irish name. Except they're not Irish. AT ALL. I think practices like that are pretty ridiculous. JMHO. :)

Of course, but that doesn't mean you won't get funny looks. ;) DH, who is not Chinese, picked up clothes on our recent trip to China that are either traditionally-styled Chinese tops or t-shirts with Chinese writing and loves wearing them. But yeah, he gets some funny looks, especially when he's not with me. :)

Thanks, everyone. We introduced Jade to our giant *old* shepherd-boxer-pitbull mix today. Although Sister (that's my dog's name) is the sweetest dog ever, I was a little bit concerned because she's so big and strong.

Both Jade and Sister did great and they're actually cuddled up resting together right now. I'm not going to leave them alone unsupervised for a good, long while, just to make sure I know how they're both going to act. But for now, I couldn't be happier! I might try to post a photo of the two of them later.
