Just curious - Which magazines do you get that are really, really good. By this I mean which ones do you just devour from cover to cover, not just which do you read. For me there are only two - Cooking Light and Somerset Studio (an art stamping/paper arts mag). Have subs to about a dozen mags though since I am a serious magazine addict! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Aah- another magazine addict! I have more subscriptions than I can keep up with, but several I've received "free" using frequent flyer miles, so it's not such an expensive habit. I also don't have cable TV, so reading is my vice!

My favorites:

National Geographic
National Geographic Traveller
Walking
Shape
Cooking Light
Talk
Sunset
Organic Gardening
Journal Francais
Food and Wine

There are a few others, but none that I devour cover to cover. I also buy Health magazine, which I love and to which I should just get a subscription. It would be cheaper!

Hm.... probably the only one I read every single word of is Runner's World.
I also devour Conde Nast Traveler and Travel and Leisure when I have the time. And of course, I am to assume that Cooking Light is a given? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Well I am finally catching up reading my magazines. I enjoy B Appetit, Gourmet, CL. After reading those I go on to Good Housekeeping, Redbook, Buena VIda (keeps me informed whats going on in PR) then Health. I like to read Prevention at night...the other cooking magazines mentioned above I keep a higlighter pen to remind me of which recipes to try. Then DH and I tend to read Food & Wine too before the weekend in case we wabt to try some new wines etc.

The only other magazine I devour besides CL is People. I used to subscribe to everything from Cosmo to Women's Day, but slowly but surely cancelled them all so I could afford the People subscription, which is about $100 per year! It's just a mag that I've always enjoyed, because it's not only about celebrities, but real people as well.

No other cooking magazines, because I never think they measure up to CL! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

OPRAH!!!!!!

The O Magazine is absolutely incredible. I read every word of every article. It's all about living your best life. They touch on so many subjects, adversity, growth, communication, charity, discrimination, and of course my favorite, shopping.

The pictures are gorgeous too.

I am also such a magazine junkie. I subscribe to Entertainment Weekly, Self, Fitness, CL of course, and Glamour. I also really love InStyle and Vanity Fair, and pick them up when someone interesting is on the cover.

In addition to CL, I read "Fine Cooking" from cover to cover, but I rarely cook from it.

Other favorites are "Time" and "Newsweek." I don't watch TV, so these keep me up to date.

And I also love "Discover" and "Natural History." In that vein, I think I'm about to re-subscribe to "National Geographic."

Another magazine junkie here! I don't subscribe to many US mags because the "foreign" rates are sohigh I can buy them sooner anf for the same price in the store. I love Canadian Living Chatelaine Health Vegetarian Times and People .
I try and get magazines from the library but it takes a long time to get a current issue! Nothing is worse than standing in the checkout line at the grocery store with all those enticing covers in your face. When I break down and buy one I always vow never again!! And when I put it in the recycling bin or take it to the gym I try envision that being a five dollar bill I have just thrown away. That works for awhile- until I lose my will power and "treat" myself again!! I do this when I have been subbing alot- I deserve it right??

I too am a magazine junkie, but the only ones I devour cover to cover (besides CL) are my Newsweek and Health Magazine. Smithsonian Magazine has the best articles I've ever read on vary diverse topics, but I'm usually stretched for time so turn to this mag on lazy Sunday afternoons. Not to impressed with Shape (was given to me as a gift). The other mags I get (Midwest Living, Outdoor Explorer, and Washingtonian) I just flip through. I am about to order Vegetarian Times again though, and am excited about that.

I have a hard time keeping up with my magazines but my favorites are:
O Magazine
Health
Real Simple

I noticed that no one mentioned Real Simple, but it's a great magzine worth checking out. I've used several recipes from that magazine for cooking.

Count me in as one of those magazine addicts. Currently I subscribe to CL (of course), Bon Appetit, This Old House, Shape(xmas present), Martha Stewart Living, Travel Holiday, and Food & Wine. I also will frequently buy O, Travel & Leisure, Cooks Illustrated, CN Traveler, and occasionally Gourmet. I have to say, though, that of all those, the only ones I read cover to cover are CL and Bon Appetit -- I think they're both nearly perfect. I think that BA is just as good as CL (even though it doesn't have any of the health/fitness articles) and the recipes are really accessable. I've been pretty disappointed with Food & Wine lately - it just doesn't seem to ever have many recipes that I like (I find that with Gourmet a lot, too) -- does anyone else feel this way?

A dangerous thread, as it might give me ideas for yet more subscriptions! I would probably be embarrassed to figure out just how many magazines I subscribe to. Plus, I magazine share with two friends and my mother, so I read all their magazines as well. And then, I can check out all but the latest issue of dozens of more magazines at the public library. So most categories get covered. I have even been known to settle down with my husband's Road & Track! These are the ones I'm most excited to find in my mailbox: CL, Bon Appetit, Real Simple, and Entertainment Weekly. A really shallow new pleasure is Lucky, the shopping magazine! All about conspicuous consumption from beginning to end. I agree with the comment about Food & Wine--I read it, but almost never make anything from it. Nor have I made anything from Gourmet in ages. But that doesn't stop me from reading it every month!

I am a recovering magazine addict--I now only have two subscriptions and hardly ever buy mags at the store. Both magazines I read cover-to-cover though--CL and the Atlantic Monthly. I also get the Sunday New York Times which I consider a magazine because it takes me the whole week to get through it! Sometimes I'll go to the library at school and indulge in The New Yorker or Health but I don't buy them anymore. Years ago I used to get Mirabella and I really loved it, but when Grace Mirabella stopped running it, it went downhill and I stopped my subscription.

Soooo many magazines, so little time!!
I have pledged to myself that I will be more circumspect in my magazine purchases -- sometime in my life! Right now, I always have a magazine in my purse, and I bring 1 or 2 to read at lunch. I speed read all of them, and then go back and read for content the most appealing articles.
I subscribe to CL, Sunset, MS Living (a gift), Bon Appetit, Newsweek, Birder's World, The Bark (THE most wonderful mag. about dogs), and Fine Cooking.
I also usually pick up a Cook's Illustrated if the topics look interesting, and I just last month found a magazine (new to me) called "Cuisine"....had grilled pannini sandwiches in it that I couldn't resist.
I recycle many of them by taking them to the break room at work - people *love* when I do that! Even though I would like to keep so many articles--it just gets out of hand very quickly!! Just ask my DH!!
Off to lunch with the July Sunset...

I love magazines but due to clutter concerns, I have had to cut down. Not to mention that I need larger bookshelves for my cookbook collection. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif

I now only subscribe to Bon Appetit, Cooking Light and BirdTalk. I have noticed that getting older has changed my tastes in magazines. I used to religiously buy Cosmo and Glamour every month and now I could care less.

My current favorites in addition to what I subscribe to are: Sunset, In Style, Better Homes and Gardens, People, Woman's Day, Family Circle and an occasional frivoulous purchase of Marie Claire or Vanity Fair. This does not necessarily mean that I get these every month.

I have been able to find Sunset and In Style at the library bookstore for $.25 each; my sister subscribes to Sunset and my niece, People so we recycle among ourselves.

Guess I'll fess up too. I'm an addict, which is unfortunate because I'm also a graduate student with plenty to read and not much free time. I read Health and, my latest addition, The Sun, from cover to cover. The Sun is a very interesting, ad-free mag., with diverse and controversial articles, stories, and poetry. Very good reading.

I just subscribed to the Utne Reader and sent for a sample of Cuisine...someone please help!!

I'm a full-fledged member of MA (Magazine's Anonymous http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif ). I've had to work to cut down on my magazine comsumption and recently decided not to renew my BH&G. My newest favorited cover-to-cover is InStyle, although I have yet to subscribe. I also read: CL (which I give gift subs to sis and sis-in-law), Martha Stewart, Memory Makers and Creating Keepsakes (scrapbooking magazines). Then I'll also peruse my DH's Backpacker. And. of course, my mom brings me her People mags. Oh, then my mom-in-law gives me her Frommer's Budget Travel magazine. Too many magazines....no, too little time!!!

We should form a magazine junkie support group!

I get a lot...many of them free for some reason or another. Ranked in order of how much I read and enjoy them:

CL (of course that must be first!)
US
Conde Nast Traveler
Gourmet
Shape
Home and Garden
Movieline

I also enjoy picking up Rosie, InStyle, and O at the store. I'm glad I'm not the only one! My husband thinks I'm weird!

I love magazines, so we (my family) subscribe to quite a few. Here's what we get:

*Cooking Light (my fave I would say)
*Martha Stewart
*Gourmet
*Bon Appetit
*People
*a few random ones pertaining to rhythmic gymnastics http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
*Travel and Leisure (I also like this one)
*Conde de Nast (and this one!)

I also will usually/occasionally pick up Heatlh (I really like this one too), Shape, or Fitness.

I cannot believe noone out there reads Sports Illustrated? I admit, it's my husband's subscription, but it is a great pub. Rick Reilly and Steve Rushin are hilarious.

That and Cooking Light are the two pubs I get excited about when I open the mailbox. Also get Shape and Health, but those are skimmers in my opinion.

Oh, also get the magazine, Mensa, for geniuses. Lots of talk about quantum physics, thermodynamics and black holes, among other light topics. Good bedtime reading.

HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!HA! Admit it, I had you wondering for just a split second!

Mbart--Too funny. You're not alone! My husband subscribed for many years, and he was too busy to read it, but I always read it every week! I love Rick Reilly!

At last count I had 17 subscriptions. My favorites are CL (of course), Chile Pepper Magazine, Sunset and Tennis.

My favorite magazines I read cover to cover are CL, Natural Health and Vegetarian Times. I'm not a vegetarian but we eat a lot of meatless meals. I'm surprised none of you mentioned Natural Health, so far. It's a great magazine!

We get too many!
We get lots of dry computer ones, science, and e-business ones which are part of our "for work" reading. The ones that I read and look forward to are Cooking Light, Discover, Science, Mother Jones, Hawaii, Shape and Publisher's Weekly (still, even though I am not in books anymore, but magazines).
DH has a million car mags coming to the house!

We receive CL, Bon Appetit, Cook's Illustrated, Health, Newsweek, Sunset and Vegetarian Times.

I don't read much of Health and Veg. Times (and will let both subscriptions run out this year), but the others are all cover-to-cover for me.

In Cook's Illustrated I even read the articles about finding the perfect recipe for various meat-based dishes, even though I'm a vegetarian, just because I totally enjoy their testing process!

Let's see, I'll add myself to the list of magazine junkies here! Right now, I only subscribe to CL, Bon Appetit, Shape, and Fitness. But I am planning to subscribe to Food & Wine, Gourmet, Wine Spectator. I used to subscribe to Food & wine, but let the subscription run out - I didn't like it anymore. But it seems as though they've revamped it recently, and I like the new features. I am developing an interest in learning about wine, that's why the Wine Spectator.
Occasionally, I read Travel and Leisure, Self, and Saveur. I would like to try O sometime soon, too, after all the rave reviews.

A suggestion (I just skimmed through the lists, so forgive me if someone already mentioned this)- take your old issues to a women's shelter. There is such a need for reading material with positive role models, a focus on health (physical, mental, emotional), fitness, diet.

Julie- I discovered Natural Health earlier this year in my dr's office- I made it through a number of back issues during a 2-hour wait one day. It is very good- thanks for reminding me. Yet another to add to the list of "I really should subscribe to this"

Other than CL, the only other magazine good enough to subscribe to has been "Victoria." I lost interest in that kind of thing though. They did have some good recipes on occasion, but I mainly loved all the pictures. The first issue I got in 1991 always has been and still is my absolute favorite.

"Country Living" also had some excellent recipes from time to time.

"Cook's Illustrated looked fabulous, but I was not ready to spend so much money for such a thin, short and quick magazine. I always have time to read almost the whole thing in the store.

Homes, lifestyles, travel and the like. I've heard it's a great publication.

KValley

Dana,

Sunset is a magazine of life in the West. It covers traveling, gardening, architecture/interior design, and food/wine. I absolutely love it. I guess it would be akin to Southern or Midwest Living. The recipes are often outstanding and I am constantly tearing out the Home section to add to my "dream house" file. The Pacific Northwest edition is pretty heavy on Western Washington/Oregon, so the gardening section is often not helpful, but overall it's outstanding.

Sunset magazine is a popular West Coast magazine. It cover OR, WA, CA, AZ, ID, UT, CO, and NM - I think. It's been around for ages and is an all-encompassing travel, food, decorating, outdoor, living publication.

Oops, I didn't go to page 2 to see that others had already answered your question http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
