Do you have a favorite field guide to the trees of New England?

We are finally going to do it! We are scheduled for a home exchange in Vermont between October 8 and October 22. The one previous time I was in the Northeast, in July of 1994, the forests looked like an undifferentiated mass of green to me because I didn't know what I was looking at. I would love to be able to recognize at least a few of the trees I will be seeing.

Most of our references are for western trees and the native deciduous trees especially are quite different in the east and the west. I have a venerable Golden Nature Guide Trees: A Guide to Familiar American Trees and that's it. I have found some recommendations on Amazon here (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=br_ss_hs/002-7950968-5209617?platform=gurupa&url=index%3Dstripbooks%3Arelevance-above&keywords=Field+Guide+New+England+trees&Go.x=8&Go.y=9&Go=Go) but am interested in your experience. I think I am looking for something fairly simple as I am very much a beginner with regard to trees of this region.

Thanks!

Kay

National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Trees: Eastern Region (Eastern) (Turtleback)

this one was listed on amazon. I've had good luck with my audubon guides to different wildlife, so this one would probably be good too. You can also pick up a used bird guide too if you were interested. We have some interesting birds here in New England.

Kay, Vermont Life magazine publishes a good, basic field guide specifically devoted to Northeast foliage trees. I've used a previous edition for years now!

Have fun on that trip; if it's a good year, the colors will be beyond anything you've imagined. I was always indifferent to this heavily touristed season until I went the first time!
