Yum...I made it last night with fresh picked strawberries and it is awesome. No, its not as smooth and silky as the real gelato, but darn close! Of course, you have to remember that the homemaker is not going to get the same results as pros get...we just don't have the exact or right equipment.
I used fat free half and half in place of the buttermilk and cut the recipe in half. The gelato has a wonderful strawberry taste with the creaminess of gelato. It will harden in the freezer like your ice creams and sorbets, but if you let it sit a few minutes it will soften up. Try it...you'll like it! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif This is a good base for other fruit flavors....mango....pineapple....

Made this recipe today. My husband thought it was wonderful. Rich strawberry taste. Think I will try it with mango.
This recipe is a keeper.

Yes, the mango will be delish too! I think pineapple will be next since DH likes pineapple more than strawberry. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I made this last night and was very surprised at how creamy it is. I halved the recipie and it filled my Cuisinart ice cream maker.

This weekend I changed the recipe around and made it with Pineapple and fat free half and half. DH loves pineapple! It is very good.

I made the Mango-Passionfruit Gelato last night--WONDERFUL!!! I used passionfruit-pineapple nectar(couldn't find just passionfruit nectar) and fat free half and half.

Hello,
Does anyone else have problems with ice cream crystalization? Mine comes out of the freezer so crunchy, even the full fat versions. I have the Cuisinart. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Another possible error-the container that I freeze the ice cream in is much larger than the ice cream itself. Or could my freezer be too cold? The taste is great, but texture stinks. HELP! Kelly

Have to add my thumbs up on this one! Yummy!! We had it for dessert for Fourth of July and it was delicious. I made it as written, with the buttermilk, but did half the recipe because it did look like it made a lot. A definate repeater!

I too loved this gelato. Very strawberry with a bit of twang from the buttermilk.
kluck - I just made a fuller fat vanilla ice cream in my cuisinart (it was for a celebration dinner - had always done low/lower fat recipes before) and was very disappointed in the texture. It was worse than most of my low fat recipes. We thought we'd taken it out of the ice cream maker a few minutes too early. If you haven't had any smooth recipes, try making the fudgesicle recipe (the one with 2 cups milk and 1 pkg chocolate pudding) - I think that has a great smooth, fudgy texture. I've had great success with the cookies and cream recipe that uses silken tofu -- hmm I think it was the May Cooking LIght (one with chocolate mousse on the cover) - that has a wonderful smooth texture.

Kim,
Where can I find this recipe? (Or, would you post it?) Always looking for a good bit of chocolate!
Have to put my two cents in on the strawberry buttermilk gelato also. This recipe, combined with the reviews above, finally pushed me over the edge to buy an ice cream maker. I'm so glad I did. What flavor this recipe has!
I was thinking of substituting peaches for the strawberries next time around. Should I just puree them like the strawberries or would I need to cook them down first?

This was so good! I will never again be able to buy commercial strawberry ice cream because it just couldn't compare.
Heidi, I think you could substitute peaches without cooking them. I'd love to hear how it turns out if you try it. I was thinking about trying it with bananas.

Heidi...yes you can use fresh peaches. I used fresh pineapple and pureed it in my blender until smooth. You should be able to do the same with ripe fresh peaches. I also think that canned peaches my work also. I have been thinking about trying it next with peaches also. I will try the canned peaches and let you know how it comes out. :)
Here is the Fudgesicle recipe from Cuisinart. I bet this would work with other flavors like Pistachio.

SusieO & Mamasue,
Thank you both for replying regarding substituting peaches. I'm definitely going to try this next! I'll let you know how it is.
SusieO - Ooh! Didn't even think of bananas. Yum! Let me know how that one is. I LOVE bananas!
Mamasue - Thank you for the Fudgesicle ice cream recipe. Sounds even better with pistachio. I'll have to give that one a try, also.
I'm so excited about my new ice cream maker. :D I almost can't eat it quick enough so I can make more  .

I made Peach Gelato tonight and it came out wonderful. Actually it was creamier than the other flavors. I had a jar of peachs in light syrup that came from TJ's (which by the way are better than canned). I cut up peaches (drained) to measure 1 1/2 cups and pureed in blender until smooth. Added the cool syrup and fat free half and half and blended. When tasting the mixture, I found it needed a little more peach flavor so I added about 4 to 5 teaspoons of Peach Snapps.........Oooooooo....reminded me of Sex on the Beach.

Mamasue,
Ooooohhhh! That sounds dee-lish! I'm definitely going to try peach next. Guess I'm going to have to pick up a bottle of peach schnapps now. Oh, darn.

I tried the Blueberry Gelato last night and thought it was wonderful too. I used frozen berries that I picked a few weeks ago - very fresh, rich berry flavor!

Tell me about the fat free half and half... is it really as good? I have been using real half and half and skim milk in place of the heavy cream called for in my recipes with good results and have never heard of the fat free kind....

Heidi....I bought a nip of peach snapps but it would be nice to have a larger bottle in the house...:D :D
Ashley....blueberry will be the next flavor. Thanks for your review. Did the blueberry flavor really stand out? I was given some blueberry tea bags as a gift and don't think that I would drink it straight up and thought that it could be used to flavor the gelato if needed. :)
Kim....When I first made the Strawberry Buttermilk Gelato I didn't have buttermilk and I always have FF half and half on hand so I substituted with that and have been using it ever since. It has worked for me in this recipe. I haven't experimented with the half and half in any other ice cream recipes. :)

Mamasue-
I thought the berry flavor really stood out, but I think if you were using store-bought berries rather than fresh-picked you may want to infuse the mixture with the tea. I hope it turns out delicious!
