Our DD will be turning 1 this fall and we have planned a trip to Disneyland over her birthday (DH wanted to take DS and I didn't want to go with a "baby" so I said we could go once DD turned 1 ;) ) Anyway, of course, we will celebrate her big day there.

I am now trying to figure out what do with our family that will want to celebrate her day and what to do with the family that couldn't care less about celebrating anyone on any day.

Option 1) Host a cake/ice cream type thing for a few hours once we get back and have everyone here at our house. No one will have fun and there will be lots of strange dynamics among various family members. BUT....the family tradition of family birthday parties will continue on...

Option 2) Do nothing once we arrive home as we have already celebrated

Option 3)???

Any creative ideas? BTW, I am talking about appox. 10 adults and 5 kids.

It sounds like you want option 2.

How much family whining would you have to endure if you didn't do the birthday party? I eloped, and family/friends whined about it for at least 5 years, maybe a little longer.

Would avoiding the couple of hours of wierd family dynamics be worth the 5+ years of complaining? Or maybe no one would care?

It does sound like you don't want the party for family. I have weird dynamics in my family as well, but there were a lot of family and friends that would have been mortified if I didn't have a first birthday party for my DS. I also wanted to have one in order to get the pictures of the first cake, etc. If it were me, I would do the cake and ice cream thing, either before or after you go. After might be nice so you can show off pics from your trip.
