We've moved into a brand new neighborhood so noone really knows anyone yet. I'd like to meet some of my neighbors so I wanted to invite everyone over for a casual get together. I'd like to invite entire families, something easy, and something that sounds kind of cool/fun.

so far my ideas are:
make your own ice cream sundaes - bring your favorite topping
dessert social - but I'd like to work it other than social to make it sound a little more exciting
appetizer - bring your best appetizer and we'll vote on the winner
wine and cheese (but how to incorporate kids?)

You could do a popsicle party with all different types of popsicles and ice cream novelties. That way you're not asking people you don't know to bring stuff.

If you do wine and cheese for adults, you could do pb&j for the kids.

At the party, you could do that name game, where you get a famous person's name on your back and you have to guess it from what other people say. I would do much easier names for the kids.

What about a water gun party? (It's really hot here right now.)

I vote for the ice cream sundae party. That sounds like a lot of fun. You could have people vote on the Best and most Unusual toppings and give prizes for that.

I like the idea of the popsicle party too! That would be a lot of fun especially if you could find some really unique ones.

You could also incorporate ice cream sodas into either of the parties too.
