My dd wants this bed:

I really like it a lot (check out the room view) but am unsure about the "sleepability" of a platform mattress w/o a foundation. So, what do you think? Will she get the comfort of a regular mattress/foundation set? What type mattress is best for a platform?

DH and I got a platform bed from IKEA. Our mattress was one from IKEA as well that was in their clearance room (one corner was slightly dirty so, they discounted it  ). We used the bed in our apartment and really liked it. It was really comfortable and sturdy. I even thought it was comfortable when I was pregnant. Since we moved into a house, we got a different bed for us and use the platform bed as one of our guest room beds. No complaints from any of our guests! :)

I'd suggest just finding a mattress that is comfortable and durable. I never noticed a difference between just a mattress and a mattress & box springs.

The bed your DD wants looks really nice.

Shar, I don't have any input on the mattress, but I love the Zen bed. DH and I are in the market for new bedroom furniture and I keep going back to the Crate and Barrel site to look at that bed.

We have a platform bed in our guest room that used to be our primary bed. It's fine and perfectly comfortable to sleep on, although not as comfortable as our main bed, which I suspect has much more to do with the quality of the mattress than the lack of a boxspring.

My kids have platform beds. I bought them new mattresses a couple of years ago, but because they're platform beds, a box spring isn't needed. The beds are very firm. The kids much prefer the pillow top set I have. :p

I love my platform bed (from Ikea). In fact, I think a platform is better than a boxspring. It provides a 100% sturdy, flat surface. If you have a good mattress, you're all set. For that matter, if you're using a mattress designed for a futon, or something, you're actually better off on a platform than anything else.

When I lived in the tropical weather of Mexico almost all the beds were just a platform on a concrete base, perfectly comfortable with a mattress only. The key is a good mattress.

I'm very happy with my platform bed and that one looks really nice, too. Actually, mine can be adjusted for height so that you could have a box spring as well as the mattress. I chose mattress only.

What will be under the mattress? On my bed it's wire and springs and not a solid bottom (plywood?) as I've seen on others.

I would think it would depend on not only the mattress, but what the mattress rests on. DBF had a Japanese platform bed for years that was perfectly comfortable; it had a good futon mattress that sat upon a tatami base. The real problem was getting rid of it! I neglected to have it removed when the new bed was delivered and I couldn't find a single charity in town to take it (not the mattress, the bed). Every single one of them said, "we don't take platform beds".

She's living in an apartment, and probably will be moving a few more times (maybe MANY more times :) ) before having house, so this might be a good choice for her. It looks great and will be relatively easy to move, then she can use it in a guest room later.

I agree that the key is in the quality of mattress that is used on it. I think there was a mattress thread recently--I'm going to look it up. I have no idea what the base under the mattress is, ellielk, but that will definitely make a difference. I'd guess it's something metal since the frame is metal. Don't people put a board under their mattress to help with back problems? This doesn't seem much different from that.

Thanks for the responses :)

(Canice, I can't think of any reason why a charity wouldn't take one... ??? Very odd.)

We have 2 bed w/slats and plywood for our Select Comfort beds. They are perfect for the air mattress and everyone loves them. The good thing about the Select Comfort beds are they can be taken apart and moved easily.

For years I slept on an LL Bean "camp bed" which is just a simple platform bed. I bought a good mattress and I loved that bed. It's now in our guest room and everyone who sleeps on it comments on how comfortable it is.

The support under the mattress is 2" wide wood slats, with about 1/2" spacing between each slat. It seems to provide plenty of support.

That sounds like the base of our platform bed as well.
