View Full Version : Why do we have to "poke" a potato, instead of *****ing it?

Why are innocent words starred out, when all of the (obviously) foul words posted in the heading of a post today are not??? What's up with that? AND how can a screen name that includes the word "porn" be ok'ed??  Sorry for the rant--I'm just offended.

Tell me what word you used and I'll tell you why.

WOW! Go away from the board for just a few minutes and all kinds of idiots show up.

In case you haven't figured it out by the time I finish these comments, it's p-r-i-c-k. Yeah...strange that word gets bleeped but not the others. Shar, we use an older version of this bulletin board at work, and we have to actually put in specific words for it to bleep out. It looks like the administrator for this board may need to add a few more words to their no-no list. Geez! On a cooking bulletin board, THOSE words in that other thread shouldn't be here in the first place. Just.Go.Away!!!!!!!!

Well, if that was the word that was used, it's not so "innocent". The word censoring software can't differentiate what context a particular word is used in.

The correct cooking term for pr!cking a pie crust is actually docking! And while you may think that the censors here are stringent, you might try posting over at SL's board...their censors even tackle compound words...of course I have read about members that totally abused the site so they no longer have an edit button and they no longer have PMs!!!
That board had taken the Southern Hospitality to the ut-most extreme...hang out there for awhile and see if you don't agree their posts are quite sugar-coated....you can't disparage any post and heaven forbid your own mother's recipe should be a jewel...over at SL the restaurant Dick and Jane's (which I've never encounterd shows up as **** and Jane's but that board has a vast more issues...it's almost hard to believe they're part of the same Parent company...I truly thank Jennifer for allowing us to express our wide and varied opinions! :D

Not that I've been spending any time over at theknot.com ... but on their boards, the restaurant "Schmidt's" is censored!! The only reason I could come up with is that it is a curse word with one character between every letter ...

It is odd that some words are censored while others aren't, but I'm generally ok with the software on this board.

I have absolutely no problem with varied opinions - wouldn't have it any other way. Being able to express our ideas is what makes the board work. The censoring of words does seem random - I think Melanie is right, the software may need a couple of additions. (I realize that, then, "banal" would be unreadable :) )

I AM offended by that porn post today. Maybe because it is so in-your-face and I feel a little protective about this site. Sort of like somebody spray-painting an obscenity on the side of your house. (Maybe a little stretch there, but that's the idea)

I know the SL site has had a lot of problems. It's been closed a couple of times - and now no edit and no PM's?? Doesn't sound like much fun.

It's NOT much fun. It's mostly inane chatter (IMNSHO).

All forums have their share of chat that's interesting only to a few. The SL site has been beaten down into a shell of what it once was thanks to a group of small-minded individuals. Even in its prime, there were too many members who felt threatened by free speech and reported anything they didn't agree with, so it was basically doomed from the beginning.

Oh, and forget about saying cocktail, snowflake, or Yankee.. All you'll see is ********, *********, and ****** :p

I signed up just before the long shutdown. I thought it was a pleasant place to read when I had the time. (Unlike here, where I read every day ...sometimes twice a day.) After they shut it down, the new allowances made it difficult to read. You are right. Too many ***** and you can't even understand what the poster was trying to say.

Even though I don't usually comment on the political posts, because I'm certainly not knowledgeable enough to keep up, I enjoy reading the diverse points of view. Even when they get a little heated, there is still good info to be gleaned. I hope these boards DON'T get to the point where the monitoring takes away from the exchange of ideas and only the drivel remains.

I think the diversity of thought is what keeps these boards lively.
