View Full Version : Let's agree on how to handle these spam/porn postings.

I think if we band together we can at least take a little of the wind out of their sails. Since so many of us are regulars here, how about:
One person can view the obviously offensive post and tell them they have been reported.
Until the moderator is able to remove it do not view the post....that is what they want! It seems a shame that as I am writing this, the obviously offensive post from today has already had 101 views.

Wadda you all think? Do you think it might help?

Sounds like a good plan! Thanks for bringing it up.

I believe the board (as a unit) has gotten a lot more savvy about spam in general; seems now when some dumb spam (albeit a lot less...explicit...than tonight's) shows up, one or two persons make a wise-crack and/or state that it's been reported, and the post is left to die. If people choose to view it or open the links, really that's their choice, but I sometimes wonder why (after a comment or two) anyone wants to dignify the post by responding and bumping it right back up to the top of the page. The boards cannot ever be slow enough to make that worthwhile, IMHO, and I'd rather let the darned things die til Jennifer can take them down.

I agree about not bumping it up by posting, but I really don't think the OP cares how many people view the post. They want us to open the link.

Interesting...I haven't seen tonight's offending post, but I do know on another vBulletin site I frequent, there has been an increase in offensive posts lately.

I guess they know to wait until the weekend when the moderators aren't around. Personally, one thing I really like about this board is that you can place your cursor over a thread and "hover" on it to get the gist of what it is about. This way I know not to even bother opening the spam, and if I do see one post I know that is has probably been reported.

The other vbulletn board I am on has suspended all registrations for the time being.
Here's his post:
Due to the increased number of automatic registrations that are getting by some of the registration protocols, I am temporarily suspending registrations at this time until things cool down. Apparently a few individuals have found a way of executing a script to automatically register themselves with vbulletin forums across the world. I will see if vbulletin.com can come up with anything new to curtail this activity.

Okay, so I admittedly look at the spam posts- but that's because there's usually an amusing response from one of the BB members!!!

They usually die out pretty quickly.

I reported a spam post the other night since I was up with insomnia, but didn't post to the spam saying so. That way it wasn't bumped up any higher.

Another EXCELLENT point!

I'm sure they're blanketing the universe with these things too and aren't eagerly checking back to see how many times the denizens of the Cooking Light boards opened the post. They just drop it and move on. All they want is the link accessed and people opening the post inadvertently or otherwise probably isn't going to have any effect on how many more of these things the board attracts. They're just an annoyance of internet life and I think we do a good job handling them by having the person who sees it first report it so it can be removed.

Yes, posting a pithy comment does no good, as the person (or computer program) who made the posts is NOT going to check back to see what the responses are. Spam is different from trolling, where someone posts something provocative just to stir the pot. I am amazed in this day and age that people get riled up by spam, even porn spam. You can't take it personally, either in terms of yourself or this board community. The posts you saw this weekend probably represents 1/10000th of the posts that person/program made in the space of a few hours. It has nothing to do with "us" and doesn't deserve attention, commentary, or even this discussion.

This board has SO VERY LITTLE spam compared to other communities -- it's nothing, really.

And who cares if these posts get viewed? Again, no one is checking back and saying "woo hoo, got 'em!" Clicking on the post isn't "what they want" -- what they want is to get paid the $0.001 they charged to make the post. You're not feeding the beast by viewing the post -- you ARE feeding the beast if you follow the links in the post, so cut it out! LOL

Okay, so I know this has been asked before but... How do you report a spam???????

Another one just hit and I was the first to open but did not know how to help the BB. Fortunately, colleency was right behind me and took care of it.

Please advise!

At the top of every post, right hand side, there is a number (your post is #13) and a little "caution" sign next to it. You click that sign to report. :)

I saw the My foto post before I saw this one and since it was the very top thread I opted to actually reply to say that I reported the post since it wouldn't actually bump it any further than it already was. Normally I would never post to those because I don't want to bump them up.

OMY this is soooo embarrassing :o ... I just don't see a caution sign. At first I thought it was a Mac thing so I turned on my dh pc and still this is all I see:

I think one person has to post that they reported the spam, otherwise everyone will be reporting it! Other than that, I agree that we should probably not post. We should leave the pithyness to "nevermind" threads. Although I do miss the occasional SPAM singalong.

It's a little number 1 in a red triangle in the upper right corner. Maybe it's supposed to be an exclamation point or something, but it looks like a 1.

Actually, I also just accidentally discovered that you have to be logged in to see the "Report this Post" button....
