Well, the boys got "kicked out" of their current day care 'cause they weren't potty trained by 3.
So, we're starting a new day care this week. Afternoons for the first week, to ease them in.
I can't tell yet who will be more emotionally traumatized...me or them. I really did love their old school.

Wow! And I thought my son's daycare was bad by just not letting him up to the next classroom for not being potty trained by 3. I'd be really mad if I had to find a new daycare!

  You're kidding, right?
So what were THEY doing to help train??? There are lots of boys that aren't trained by 3.
Sorry you had to find a new care center . . . I'd hate that.

That is a good question, because I know in our case they were VERY pushy about potty training, and I think they scared him away from it since he had previously been expressing interest in it. I'd be really mad if they kicked him out after they were the ones pressuring him too much.

Yeah, they definitely tried to help potty train, but one of the boys just has no interest (the other pretty reliably will tell you if he has to pee, but not poop)
So, they have two rules that by themselves make sense: You must be potty trained to go to the next stage, and, children over 3 aren't allowed in the infants room.
So, we kinda got squeezed out by the rule combo...they couldn't stay because they were too old, but they couldn't go to the next class 'cause they weren't trained yet.
So far, only girls have made the graduation to the next level...every other boy has left. Which reminds me to pimp this PBS show:

Which is a shame, cause I really feel they were getting otherwise high quality care.

This just seems plain wrong to me. What if every daycare had this rule? Are they trying to tell us that there is no place for a 3-year-old boy who is not potty trained? I just don't get it. And if they see it happening with that many boys, you'd think they could come up with an alternate plan!
I have two boys and get very aggravated with the stereotypes I come up against. Boys are slower to mature, they should be held back....blah, blah, blah.
How about evaluating a child based on their abilities instead of broad generalizations? Sheesh. We ignored everyone's advice (advice based on broad generalizations, not our boys' individual abilities or maturity level) to hold our boys back from starting kindergarten and haven't once regretted it. But I digress............

A lot of licensing guidelines in different states specify these types of things. I've worked in preschool classrooms that were prohibited from having children in diapers/pull ups by licensing guidelines.
I know that I have 2 children, possibly 3, in this year's Head Start class who are still in pull ups/diapers. We are not allowed to not enroll a child because they aren't using the toilet yet. It was quite fun  a few years ago when we had a child wearing diapers in one of our Head Start/Pre-K public school classrooms. The principal almost had a fit.

What is the approximate age that boys are trained? Is it later than girls?

I think it depends on the child, the parents, and outside influences. Both of my sons were trained before they were 3 (somewhere between 2 1/2 and 2 3/4). I know that when we were kids (I'm almost 47), most of us were trained before we were 2. Whether this meant that our mothers were trained to recognize our signals and got us to the toilet or whether we actually got there ourselves is open for debate. But with disposable diapers ... we are now trained later and later.
