I would help you if I could, but I don't want to give you wrong information. Try the Good Food board. It is very active and I am sure someone can help you.
Pisces,
I found this recipe in The Best of the Best. I haven't made it, but everything else I've made from this cookbook is great. I hope it helps. A first birthday is very exciting!
Chocolate Angel Food Cake
12 egg whites, at room temperature
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 C sugar
2 tsp. vanilla
3/4 C sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1 C flour
1/4 C. cocoa powder
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
sprinkling of icing sugar
Preheat oven to 350F. In a large bowl using medium speed, beat egg whites until frothy. Add cream of tartar; increase mixer speed to high. Gradually add 1 C of sugar and vanilla. Beat until stiff, glossy peaks form. In another bowl, combine sugar, salt, flour, cocoa and baking soda. Sift and fold into egg whites 1/3 at a time. Spoon batter into ungreased angel food pan. Bake 40 minutes, or until pick inserted comes out clean. To cook cake, invert pan. Cool 30 minutes. Using knife, release sides and middle of cake from pan. Invert onto plate. Sprinkle with icing sugar.
I'm not sure of the contents of cream of tartar - does it contain milk?
Good Luck and Happy Birthday to your little one!

Hi, my daughter is nearly 11 months - she is allergic to cow's protein as well as soy. Most Dr.'s also put the red light on egg whites until they are 1 year. Here is a recipe from What to Expect the First Year. Let me know what end up making or if you find good recipes so I can try for my little one's first b-day! Have fun!
Baby's First Cake
Makes 1 single-layer 8-inch square
Vegetable cooking spray
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons apple juice concentrate
1/2 cup whole raisins
1/2 cup chopped dates
1/4 cup butter or margarine (I wonder if this is OK or if you substitute?)
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamom
3/4 cup whole-wheat flour
1/2 cup wheat germ
4 1/2 teaspoons low-sodium baking powder
Preheat oven to 325, coat an 8-inch square non-stick baking pan with vegetable cooking spray. Set aside.
Combine the juice concentrate, dried fruits, butter & cinnamom in a small saucepa. Simmer over low hear until the butter is melted. Remove from the stove & let cool.
Combine the flour, wheat germ & baking powder in a mixing bowl. Gradually blend the fruit mixture, stirring until just mixed (do not overmix).
Pour batter into prepared baking pan, bake about 30 minutes. Cake is done with toothpick inserted into the center comes out dry. Cover loosely with foil during baking if cake starts to brown.
To keep cake from becoming too dry & hard for baby to gum, cover with aluminum foil or store in a plastic bag as soon as it has cooled slightly.

I am just looking into this book some more and there are 2 other recipes that might be of interest. One is Golden Cake, which has no dairy, but does have 2 egg whites. The other is First Birthday Cake, which also has eggs but no dairy.

thank You everyone, This was my first time on this message board and was really surprised to get any responses. I did find that cream of tarter does no have dairy in it, and CL my son loves eggs, he is able to eat them just no milk.???? You got me on that one, I will try to make both of the recipes this weekend to try him with a taste before the Party and will let you know next week how it turned out.
Thanks Again,
Kimmy

Kimmy -
I don't know if I'm too late... Have you tried making a recipe with milk, but substituting rice milk or another milk substitute (almond milk)?
That would be an idea if you're not happy with other results.
