I jump started my fitness program today... really started keeping track of calories and fat and am shocked--SHOCKED--at what I found. I always thought I ate at the higher end of the calorie count, but was amazed at how much fat I eat. I guess without writing it down, I was able to "forget" some of the extras... like blue cheese.
Anyway, now I am going to try to reduce my fat intake and choose healthier choices.
Bottom line? I'm in the market for a book on nutrition. Any keepers out there that I should take a look at? I'd like something that teaches me how to change my eating lifestyle...

It's a little extreme, but Dr. Weil's book "Eating for Optimum Health" is a good one.

What do you mean "extreme"? Does it go too far? Is it too scientific? More info, please... It was one I was considering on Amazon, but thought I would wait to get some suggestions from the board.

No it doesn't go too far and it is not too scientific. It is just a little too "organic" for me. I will say though that since I read it I no longer drink tap water or raw mushrooms. I think you will enjoy it. It is a good source. I say get it!

My first "healthy" cook book was "Great Good Food - Luscious lower fat cooking" by Julee Rosso. It has alot of advice as well as delicious recipes. I have bought many, many more books but always seem to end up back at this one. You do need to be adventurous(sp?) though, but there are still alot of classics that have been lightend up. Look it up at your library to check it out first. It's a thick red book with "Great Good Food" in bold letters.

P.S.I know this is more of a cook book than an advice book on healthy living, but it did help me.

My diet/lifestyle bible has been "The New Hilton Head Metabolism Diet" by Dr. Peter Miller. It may be a little stringent for some; but it worked miracles for me (35 pds. lost so far).
It has also taught me to change my eating habits; and it incorporates exercise as part of the plan. I have learned how to count fat in conjunction with calories and after 7 months on this regime it has become second nature to me(I am currently on maintenance). And with the help of "Cooking Light" mags I have discoved a whole new way of cooking without sacrificing taste!
I should mention here that the weight loss is incredibly rapid (as in up to 5 pds in a week) but unlike other diets I have managed to maintain the loss so far. I've just never been one to wait around for results so it worked for me.
Good luck; I know how tough it can be to find something that works for you:-)
When I saw a nutritionist, he put me on the American Diabetic Association diet plan even though I'm not diabetic (high cholesterol). It's easy to use because all foods are in categories and you eat a certain number of servings per category, no counting calories. A few weeks ago, I posted info about serving sizes and how they fit in the ADA. If you want more info just ask, I'll be glad to help. Good luck!
