What do you guys consider to be your "scary" foods? You know, those foods that you're afraid to have in the house for fear that you'll devour the entire box (or bag, tin, whatever). I find myself in a constant battle with the peanut butter jar...I try to limit myself to a serving a day...and I'm so proud when I don't have any! Chocolate is so dangerous that I just don't buy it anymore...Reese's Pieces and Hershey's Bites just aren't safe around me! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

Yup, peanut butter and chocolate are my biggest weaknesses too. I have a little (or a little more than a little) http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif of both virtually every day and it keeps me sane. Since I usually have little problem limiting fat and sugar in pretty much every other way, I figure I can get away with this!

Hello! Lately I have been having problems with potato chips. I have never really liked chips all that much, but my husband keeps them around and I swear they call my name! Sometimes I just crave salty food and I can't say no.

Hi,

Me again, with a related question. I have noticed that, by and large (there are certainly exceptions), there seem to be two types of people: those whose main weaknesses are sweets, and those whose main weaknesses are salty or savory food. I was wondering which category you all fit in! (if you do fit in one or the other).

My weakness has typically been sweet things, hands down, but lately it's evened out a bit. While, as I said, my big weaknesses remain chocolate and peanut butter, I am not that interested in desserts (meaning a full serving of anything sweet). Much more frequently, I'll crave something like pasta. So I guess I'm turning into a fence-sitter http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif

And you?

Sorry, Emily - I hope you don't think I'm "hijacking" your topic! Just thought this was kind of related so people could answer both questions at the same time if they wanted... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I definitely fall into the "salty" category. Baked goods, sweets, even chocolate (ususally http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif ) I can walk away from. BUT, put some tortilla chips or peanuts in front of me -- BAD NEWS!! Especially the peanuts, I could just inhale them!!

Cheryl
PS. I hope that you all don't mind that I just jumped right in. I've been posting on the Great Food board, but only lurking over here till now.

I don't buy cookies or soda anymore. If it's not in the cupboard I can't eat it. I usually keep frozen yogurt around, that's usually enough to kill the craving. I'll bake a dessert every two weeks which helps too. Luckily my husband doesn't have much of a sweet tooth. He like chips and stuff like that. Again I just buy limited amounts of these and when they are gone that's it. At the moment I am going through a huge carbo craving, I have been working out a lot recently training for a triathlon in two weeks so my body probably needs it. Getting off the beaten track a little, has anyone got some first timer triathlon tips.
Thanks

I don't mind a bit, Natasha http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif, I'm just glad we've got an interesting thread going!
I'm definitly a sweets person. I've never liked chips and tortillas very much at all, and isn't it funny; I don't like peanuts very much, but I love peanut butter! But cashews...mmm. I'm absolutely a sweets person, but I actually don't buy any snack foods or sweets (with the exception of peanut butter and chocolate filled caramels--Hershey's are sooo good http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif ) It keeps my grocery bill down, and if I have to make myself something for a snack, like a veggie-filled omelet, it makes me have to decide whether I'm really hungry, or if I'm just bored.
phantomcg--it's definitely okay if you "jump in" ! The more, the merrier! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I don't think I can classify myself as "sweets or salty". If there is a plate of brownies in the house, forget it. However, potato chips do it to me too. I have my extremes. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif But I would say, my current no -no's are
honey mustard and onion pretzel bites

and

CL's ooey gooey brownies

I'm a self-confessed crouton fanatic. I'll buy a box for salads, and end up munching on the whole thing.

Bernk I completed my first triathlon a year ago. Although I thought I had trained well I had never run immediately after my bike. If you have not as well be prepared for your legs feeling like rubber and not wanting to move. Don't worry they come back about 1/2 mile into the run but I thought for sure I wouldn't make it. I ended up not walking and completing it in a respectable time. Have fun. I love wearing my shirt around.

By far my worst downfall is cookies, cookies, cookies - even more so than candy/chocolate. I could probably eat an entire batch in one day. Therefore I try to make them only when we're having a party or other guests or are taking them somewhere. Somehow I can stop at once piece of cake or one serving of ice cream, but with cookies I can't stop at 1 or 2!

Most days I crave sweets, but then there's the salty days too where I crave Cheetos. What is it with those things anyway????? For a group who likes their stuff homemade, what do we see in these processed nightmares????? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I don't keep any chips, Cheetos, etc. in the house or I'd be a goner. When I crave these, I just get a small snack bag and it's over and done with. And I have also found that Cheezits are addicting, so I try to buy my kids other snacks that they love that won't tempt me!!

Hmmm...I don't crave any one thing all the time; I have different cravings at different times...seems to be no consistency. I just try not to buy big bags, cartons, etc. of anything. I'm usually OK unless I get bored...I can say goodbye to a pint of ice cream, a bag of cookies, a block of cheese...anything http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif

Dark chocolate! Actually I just got LOTS of Halloween candy and put them all away in the basement. Out of sight out of mind!
Sometimes I like salty stuff or crunchy veggies but I would say chocolate is a temptation!

I tend to go in spurts, but am probably more of a salty person. Can eat chips and salsa by the gallon, the saltier, the better. Have never really been one for candy, but baked goods are my downfall when I'm in a sweet mood.

When I used to work in an office and would head to the vending machine for an afternoon snack, it was almost always chips or crackers. Unless they had Hostess King Dons in stock--how bad is that?? The things you'll do when presented with limited, all bad for you choices http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

My downfall is Cheeze-its! I can eat the whole box in a very short time. Cheetos (sp?) too- looks like it is a cheese thing?Other than that I would say sweets.

There's a couple of things that come to mind- the first thing I thought of was cheese. I have to buy very small peices of brie or I will eat way too much! I love most cheeses. I'm really not too big on sweets unless I make them myself. And then there's cheese doodles. They don't last long once the bag is opened. I buy the reduced fat ones to make myself feel better!

BernK,
Congrats on your training! Triathlons are a great morale booster. I competed in my first triathlon last summer, and these are my primary words of wisdom: be prepared to be kicked in the face, arms, legs, etc. during the swimming segment. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif
That part was a shocker, and not my favorite segment, but it's worth it, and I would definitely do one again. I will say, though, that the swimming segment is least significant time-wise, whereas the cycling segment can really make up for lost time if you're not prime on swimming, like me. You may be pretty tired by the time you get to the running part, so don't neglect your running workouts. How long is your race?
Have so much fun with your training, and don't forget to enjoy every minute of the race. I was totally freaking out when I had to get in the cold lake http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif , but the cycling segment is such an adrenaline rush, and at the end, you have such a great feeling of accomplishment. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif Good Luck!

Thanks for the hints. The triathlon is a sprint - 800m swim, 20k bike ride and a 5k run. There is only one hill on the course. the field is small between 40-50 people so I will probably hang back in the swim. I'm just looking to finish in one piece. Ignorance in this case is truly bliss, I'm actually looking forward to it.

Lindrusso, it's you and me and the cookies. I'm waiting for a good low fat chocolate chip cookie. It just doesn't want to happen. It takes a stick of butter (or two) to make a really good cookie.

Anyway, sweets are my downfall. I compromise with sugarfree fat free instant chocolate pudding. That's always in the house to be made on a moments notice. Sometimes a little whipped topping, too. Also available in fat free now. Delish and really feels like dessert.

emilycat

The problem I have with buying whipped topping is that I tend to eat it all out of the container before I actually use it on something. I LOVE Smucker's sugar free jams (strawberry and peach are my favorites), but I can't use it on a bagel before I've eaten it all! I seem to have a condiment fetish. I've been quite known to eat an entire jar of salsa by itself, no chips or anything. Salsa's actually pretty good for you, so I guess that one's not a problem. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif I'm so bad about it, though, that my sister has stuck little "Do not eat out of jar" stickers on anything and everything in my parents house so that when I come home, I won't contaminate anything! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif Is that embarrasing or what! I've even rubbed off on my SO; now we both eat mustard by the spoonful!

I am definitely a sweets person. There are very few salty snacks I'll even eat, so they're definitely not dangerous in my house. In fact, tortilla chips usually go stale in my pantry!

But watch out sweets! I too LOVE cookies, but mostly homemade. Whenever I make them, I have to have a "purpose" for them -- a meeting at work I've made them for, company coming, etc., or they'll all get eaten. And my husband is the same way, so he encourages me to take any leftover cookies to work so he won't eat them. I NEVER buy storebought cookies, mostly because I think homemade are so much better. The one exception is Oreos, which are extremely dangerous for me. I've actually eaten enough of them to make me feel sick (back in college), so I refuse to let myself buy them.

Other dangerous things for me are an opened bag of chocolate chips, ice cream, cool whip (fat free, of course), brownies, and pretty much any other baked goods. I also love breads, though I don't feel quite as badly eating them as I do the cookies!

BeckyM - I love to bake, too, but have also found it's safer to have a purpose to the baking. My co-workers are the recipients of lots of baked goods, especially around the holidays when I'm really in the baking mood.

Had to ponder this one for a few days but it has to be Krispy Kreme donuts!!!! Oh how they melt in your mouth (and if you stick them in the micro for a few seconds they really are to die for!). I can also devour brownies (really mushy in the center ones) and then turn around and eat chips and salsa. Also love a good french bread with real butter...yum! No wonder it's hard to loose those last few pounds!

I've always said I have have two true food vices....cheese and peanut butter. However, I recently ate so much PB at a single setting, I haven't been at it so much lately. (I was having one of those haven't-eaten-in-awhile shaky/clammy attacks and downed much at once http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif )

I will also eat almost anything sweet--especially homemade baked goods. And don't leave me alone with cheese and triscuits. That's my all time favorite.
