Good Morning All!

Hope you all had a great last week.

I did well in the gym department, but lousy in the eating department; I managed to gain 1/2 pound last week - ick! Way too much Halloween candy still hanging around in my house tempting me to no end!

I promised myself that I am back on track today. I'm planning the week's meals today and getting all the groceries tonight - thus eliminating the 'grab something quick for dinner' syndrome.

How did everyone else do?

Thanks for starting out Kelly... and congratulations on your good week last week. It sounds like you've got the meals under control this week, so you're all set. Keep up the good work http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I had a decent week last week. Made it to the gym 5 times for good sessions and ate pretty much nothing but Cooking Light. During my last weightlifting session, though my hamstrings kind of just gave up and I had to stop. Strange cause that's never happened to me before. Any ideas on what's going on?

Anyway, I got kind of down in the dumps yesterday cause I decided to go shopping for jeans. I must have tried on every size in every label.... and NONE fit me the way I wanted them too. So I came home pretty discouraged about my "healthy living plan" even though I know that jeans are not an accurate predictor of health http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Still. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif

Kelly,
Don't fret about the Halloween candy...I've been trying to tell myself the same thing. I've done quite a job on my Hershey's miniatures in the last couple of days, since I didn't get any trick or treaters http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif . After eating 10 of them yesterday http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif I threw the bag out this morning so it wouldn't tempt me. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif .
Everyone gives in to food indulgences once in a while, and it's not a couple of days that matter anyway; the big picture is most important. It sounds like you have a handle on things.
Mightyh, jeans are funny things...I have two pairs that I feel are truly flattering...I've come to the conclusion that jeans makers have a bias towards tall people.
I'm pretty anxious right now, because I'm in the tapering stage of my marathon training...the race is on Saturday, so I've had to cut back my mileage. Very frustrating, since high mileage has allowed me to eat more liberal quantities (and it keeps me sane); usually, I'm perpetually hungry, and now it's hard to stop just snacking all the time, even though I should be cutting back calories so I'm not lumbering to the starting line. Oh, well...maybe now that my chocolate's gone...

Its funny, but my biggest problem has been an issness. I have bronchitis which will keep me bedridden since yeserday until Wednesday...I think the antibiotic is making me hungry. I have been wanting more food that usual. I dont usually even feel ike eatin when I am sick!
I just bought Mastercook - COoking Light - and am trying to learn how to use it! It will keep me entertained while I am in bed!

Hey, I usually don't post because I am a lurker. That is just what I do. Anyways, I wanted to share. I did so good last week and just blew it this weekend. I knew I would and tried to give myself a pep talk all through friday, but the will power just wasn't there, but those margaritas were! Anyways, I hope to be back on track this week and try again this weekend. Maybe if I don't try to limit myself totally, just realize that my calories are going to increase and plan for it I can stay on track without getting frustrated.

Hello everyone!

I'm happy to say that with the 300-400 goblins that hit out house this year we RAN OUT of candy about 45 minutes before trick-or-treating was even over! So no candy here to tempt me!

Kerri - I think that for me what works is definitely not depriving too much or I will then binge from feeling deprived! If you allow yourself a little throughout the week, I think you end up doing less damage. Unless you're one of those lucky few that have an amazing will power (I sure don't!).

Well I finally made it to the gym 4 times last week - yippee! My goal is to make it at least 4 times this week and to make one of those sessions an aerobics class. I definitely work out harder in a class than I do on my own, so I need those classes to see more progress.

As far as eating goes it was okay, not great. It's time to gear up for holiday baking, so I'm going to try to make sure that it all leaves the house fairly quickly. I try to keep CL desserts or sweets around for those daily sweet cravings and give the fattening stuff away (keeping a couple to taste for myself - http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif - you have to make sure they taste okay, after all).

Keep up the good work everyone! The hard part is just around the corner!! Our Y is having weigh-ins on the 13th, and then weekly thereafter to help us keep those holiday pounds off! I plan to do them one better and even lose some weight - wouldn't it be nice to start of the New Year without those extra holiday pounds???!!!

Laura,
I assure you, not everyone falls in love with running...I feel lucky that I did, but there are plenty of people out there who just grind through every run. It's wonderful that you're so determined to get out there and go! I definitely encourage you to go for the half-marathon when you're ready. I ran my first one 2 years ago, and that race was the first time I'd ever run that far -- it was the greatest feeling of accomplishment...until I had a greater one finishing my first marathon last year. It sounds trite, but you never know what you can accomplish until you start to set goals and put your mind to them. I was a dancer in highschool, and hated to run. Dancing takes enormous talent, but not quite the amount of endurance that running does. I struggled to run two miles for my tennis team, and if someone had told me I'd be fall in love with marathon running one day, I would have laughed in their face.
Sorry for the monologue, but all of you should know that you can do anything you want to do, and that the most important part is to believe you can do it. Once you go for it, it's like an avalanche, and motivation just gets even easier. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Emilycat- thanks for the encouragement. I do get that sense of accomplishement when I have completed a long run (actually ran 9 miles this past winter.) I also felt that way after finishing my triathlon last year and my 10k in a respectable time this year (58 minutes - for me that was a respectable time!) I am thinking about joining a running club with new runners just so I can get with a group and build up my speed and endurance.

I get discouraged easily though with running because I see people who seem to just adapt to it with no problems and easily run faster than me altho I have been running longer.

Anyway, enough already. I enjoyed my run enough this morning to make me realize that I really do want to keep it part of my exercise routine. I may never be a marathoner. But I would like to be one of those people who, on any given day, can go out and run 6 miles. So here is to that goal and when spring comes I will investigate the 1/2 marathon.

Laura,
I've been thinking of joining a runner's club, too, the Atlanta Track Club would be great, and sometimes it would be nice to have someone to run with -- since I graduated from college, my running partner (and sorority sister and very good friend) moved to Palo Alto to go to grad school, so my runs are always solo. I've never had a problem running by myself, but it was easier sometimes when I knew I had to be ready to go or Anne would be waiting on me. If your motivation needs a little kick, joining a running club would be awesome.
Also, have you ever read Runner's World? (they're not paying me to say this, I promise http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif ) They have some incredible essays and articles on motivation, training, and learning to love running for how it makes you feel, not for how fast you go. BTW, 58 minutes is a perfectly respectable time, and congrats on your triathlon! (I did one last summer, and just wasn't keen on the swimming segment -- I decided JUST running was more my thing) Everyone finds their niche...maybe we'll see you in the Ironman one day http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Well last week was horrible for me. The combination of Halloween candy and straining my back resulted in me eating a lot of junk and not exercising. I have been stretching faithfully however and went for a long run/walk this morning. I ran 3 miles walked 2 which is pretty good considering how little I have done aerobically recently. I must admit I have never been one of those runners who falls in love with it. It is often a struggle to get through my runs, but I do enjoy how I feel after, and nothing beats the way it makes my legs look. So... I have a plan to get back my endurance and speed (I run only a 10 minute mile now) and we will see in the Spring how I feel about a 1/2 marathon.

I am lifting tomorrow and hope to get in 3 sessions each of lifting and running this week.

I hope everyone has a great week.

PS Best of luck emilycat on your race this weekend. Be sure to let us know how you do.

I hope you don't mind if I just jump right on in... I just can't seem to get motivated to exercise, there really is no excuse, I live in AZ so weather typically is not a problem (except lately all it does here is rain!) I've been doing pretty good in the eating dept., until I made the carmel/brownie pie that was posted on the Great Food BB. I decided I was going to start this week off on the right foot....an go for a walk today! hopefully I can keep it up. Reading all of your posts gives me motivation to get going, so I'll keep checking back for inspiration, Good Luck to everyone http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Ann

Kelly, I'm with you on that Halloween candy. I snarfed up half a bowl last night! I need to allow my kids to be more liberal with their after dinner treats! Now, if I can just maintain through the holidays...

Mightyh-I went jean shopping last week too! I actually found that Eddie Bauer has some really comfy jeans that look great and actually came in a size I haven't gotten in to in over a year! I know size should not mean anything but it was nice to see that size on the tag! I think Emilycat is right about the muscle weight issue (although I'm still 15 lbs. shy of my goal by the scale http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif)...

Anyway, I seem to have caught the bug my 8 month old had (the one lots of us in our HLSG had!) and was miserable last week and didn't get to the gym at all. It's cold and rainy today and I didn't have the motivation to go today. I need to keep reading everyone else's comments and get back there Weds. I have instead had a fun morning ignoring the laundry growing up the wall and went through my last three months of CL picking out recipes for the week! Good luck to those motivated souls out there!

My week started out great, I was on track with workouts and even eating (had to after Halloween!) but last night was my 24th wedding anniversary and I drank too much wine and champagne. All the happy little bubbles turned into a gas cloud in my head by this morning. And I had to go to my second job as a receptionist at Weight Watchers this morning! Aye Carrumba, I'm supposed to be motivating AND ACCURATE and had to keep double checking my math, had garlic and sour grapes breath, bloodshot eyes, and generally looked like H*E*L*L. I came home and put my sweatsuit on and ate comfort food in front of the TV. Luckily, all the comfort food available in the house was bagels, lentil and kale soup and low fat cheese. Tomorrow, I'm getting back on track!

P.S.: to all you Halloween sufferers out there - a lot of people I weighed at Weight Watchers had a rough week of it - then redoubled their efforts and today we had huge amounts of awards to hand out. Next Saturday is our prepare-for-Thanksgiving prep meeting - I'll try to remember to post some tips for HLSG.

Mightyh - do you stretch after every workout? The hamstrings are notorious for tightening up and it's very important to stretch them well, especially during and after leg training. Some people even find back pain diminishes when they stretch their hamstrings regularly.
