View Full Version : Poll: What Music MOVES Ya?

Music can make such a difference between a boring workout (or a NON-workout) and an exhilarating one.
What kind or kinds of music motivate you the most? Do you have any particular songs or artists that you like or would recommend?
I like just about anything with a beat or with lyrics that somehow motivate me. This includes current music - soft rock, country, hard rock, whatever!, older rock, some classical music, some jazz...I will try to come up with some specifics though I think you ll laugh at some of them. Whatever works, right?
I don t use a Walkman when I run outside, but at the gym music really keeps me going. The right music can make me extend a workout or crank up the speed or intensity. Also, occasionally I realize that I m practically dancing while on the treadmill or on one of the cross-trainers. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif Some people at the gym obviously think I m crazy for having so much fun while working out, while others find it cool. They can think whatever they want...
Over to you!

For things like spinning classes, I love disco and dance music (the cheesy club music that's annoying in any other situation); but if you're talking about stuff that just makes me want to dance, it would probably be classical...Debussy, Mozart, Beetoven, Tchaikovsky...I was a dancer for a long time, and the kind of music we danced to in class and in performances just makes me want to twirl up and down the walls. It really inspires me. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Great question. I seem to be following suit in that what makes me wanna move isn't what I would normally choose to listen to! I can move to all types - oldies, Swing (wish I could take lessons), Dixieland Jazz, some Disco....
Okay, I'm not afraid to be specific!! Here's just a few of my favorites:
It's Raining Men by the Weather Girls
Prince - like Little Red Corvette and Baby I'm a Star
Aretha Franklin - Respect and Think
Techno Dance Club Stuff like (I had to look most of this stuff up - don't know them by name):
Move This by Technotronic
You Dropped a Bomb on Me by Gap Band
What's Up by DJ Miko - I LOVE this one!
Don't Leave Me This Way - this was covered by a disco artist in the 70's but I really like the version by the Communard's. However, when I asked a DJ at a club to play the Communards version, he says he only plays it in gay bars! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif
Madonna's Like a Prayer
Mary Chapin Carpenter - I Feel Lucky
Your Life is Now by John Mellencamp
Current stuff like Ricky Martin or even, groan, Britney Spears - okay, it doesn't get too much more embarassing than that...
Love to hear some more suggestions!
One more thing - does anyone miss the 45's/singles?? I used to love to make my own tapes, but now it's a bit pricey when you have to spend so much money on single CD's.

Thanks for the responses so far!
Lindrusso, we have some of the same tastes for workout music. Add me to the group of people who will happily work out to music they would never listen to otherwise. Like you, I love to move to Move This and I Feel Lucky (also Shut Up and Kiss Me by Mary Chapin Carpenter). I will have to find those other Techno Dance Club-type songs you mentioned.
I also like to move to lots of dance music that I don t care for when not at the gym.
A few other examples of songs I love to work out or dance to are:
Desire and Angel of Harlem by U2 (I like U2 quite a lot!)
Six Days on the Road - Sawyer Brown
All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down - The Mavericks
This Kiss - Faith Hill (though most of her stuff drives me around the bend)
Fly Away - Lenny Kravitz (?)
Poor Poor Pitiful Me - Terri Clark
Rock My World (Little Country Girl) and Little Miss Honky Tonk - Brooks & Dunn
Also a whole whack of retro songs, including:
Dancing in the Dark, Glory Days and Hungry Heart - The Boss
Venus - Bananarama
What A Feeling (Flashdance) - Irene Cara (?) - okay, this is getting embarrassing now
Mad About You, I Feel Weak - Belinda Carlisle
Into The Groove, True Blue - Madonna
Cuts Like a Knife, Fits Ya Good - Bryan Adams
whatever that song is called by Nirvana that was wildly popular way back in 92 or so - anyone know the name of it?
and so, so many more
I am also a huge lover of classical music, having grown up immersed in it. I don't use it that often to work out, but it does make me want to dance (too bad I'm not a dancer like Emilycat, though!) http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif I sometimes prefer to just sit and take in classical music, too, preferably without doing anything else (or maybe following along with a score).
Big band is another big favorite: Pennsylvania 6-5000, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Little Brown Jug, and all the rest of those classics. I adore those old radio broadcasts from the 40s, and have quite a few big band tapes.
I m sure I ll come up with yet more examples (including more embarrassing ones), but this is a start!

I like to work out to stuff like
Queen
Van Halen
The Cars
U2
Aerosmith
The Police
I think I maybe dating myself! I also like to work out to a good book on tape, the further into I get the less I'm likely to stop.

Hmmm... I am probably all over the board on this but here are some favorites.
Van Morrison,
Madonna (only her first 2 albums)
The Best of the Go-go's
Spin Doctors
Genesis 3 sides live
NSync (I know, I know... my 11 year old daughter is to blame for this http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif)
Jimmy Buffet
Old Bruce Springsteen (Born in the USA and before)
and any 70's 80's mix I can get my hand on.
I'm with most on liking the dance stuff.
Add Aqua, Chumba Wumba (though there's a lot of intro stuff to their songs), Betty Boo, Spice Girls (embarassing now!), the boy bands. Techno is good too. DH likes to make tapes from CDs and I like to borrow his tapes.
For long walks, books on tape are a good idea. I'd forgotten about that. Most libraries have books on tape too.
FYI one time in one class our instructor had us doing ab work to Madonna's Like a Prayer. Ever since then, I hear it and want to do crunches! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

I work out to just about anything with a beat. The specific music depends on my mood. Bad day?? - it's back to the hard rock of the 80s. OK day?? - definitely 70s & 80s funk, disco, & dance music. One of our radio stations here in Seattle recently changed their format to all 70s & 80s dance hits...with NO announcers! Now, if only they'd cut out the commercials http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

When I ran long long distance, I used to listen to Aerosmith's Permanent Vacation. By the time the tape was over my endorphines had kicked in, and I was good to go. I still love that tape (Gosh...I think that's the right album name)
Prince also works really well, but I like "kiss" and all those songs that have the names that probably ought not go on the C.L.B.B.!

Okay, so like many of the other posts, this will date me a bit, but a favorite of mine is the soundtrack from Top Gun... not only great music, but wonderful visual imagery of the "volleyball scene". http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Oh yeah!! I've seen that movie a thousand times (for its babe-factor, not for its writing or content)and I still have to watch a few scenes of it if it's on TV. Tom Cruise at his physical best! Used to listen to the soundtrack all the time...
Top Gun is dating us???? Seems like just yesterday...

I would have to say the Red Hot Chili Peppers have always made me want to just move. You can't listen to them and sit still! This may get weird here, but I made a couple of tapes for the gym and here's what I have:
Squeeze (love them)
White Zombie (really keeps me motiviated towards the end of a hard workout)
The Smithereens - they have some great tunes
The Cure- Head on the Door cd and Mixed Up cd
Kenny Wayne Shepard
ZZ Top
Quarterflash even makes an appearance on one of my tapes (remember them? Find Another Fool to Love you, Harden My Heart)
And, yes, even Fiona Apple for the cool down part of my cardio workout.
Sometimes I even pop a Paul McCartney tape in the walkman - either Venus and Mars or Back to the Egg.
I just can't get into the disco/dance music.

I love to workout to CPM (cheezy pop music). In the weight room they are always playing classic rock, I'm sorry but ZZ Top and "Free Bird" just don't do it for me.
My very young brother in law made a workout tape for me. I hate to admit it, but it is that awful grunge stuff that you wouldn't want your kids listening to. I love it! It is just the thing for a long eliptical trainer session. I have no idea what they are actually singing (if you can call it that) but I like to make up my own g-rated lyrics.

I love blasting hard rock while I'm weight training at the gym - Metallica, Rage, Creed, AC/DC - gimme that raw and powerful pump stuff! When they play techno dance I want to hide behind a weight rack.
