View Full Version : Workout or Cruel and Unusual Punishment?

It was another blustery and snowy day here in Minnesota, and I just did not want to brave the slippery roads and icy temps to head to the gym.
But...I refused to let myself out of a workout for the second day in a row. So, I pulled out one of my ancient Richard Simmons videos and began sweatin' to the oldies.
That man is insane, and way too peppy. The workout is decent (although only 30 minutes) but you feel like an idiot doing all these 50s-inspired moves. It's enough to make you want to drive to the gym, which I guess is the idea...
Does anyone have any exercise tapes they love?

I have one Kathy Smith on DVD..it has weights, aerobics, yoga...the problem is we bought a house w/ wood flooors and DH wont let me exercise on them....
ps if you get an aerobics tape that has more than one program on it, I highly recommend DVD...no more searching...you can skip right to it!

Kim,
Would your husband mind if you bounced all over the floor if you got an exercise mat? That's such a shame not to be able to exercise at home when you don't feel like going to the gym.

I too hail from the Great White North and hate winter driving with a passion. So I do the majority of my exercise right here at home. My personal fav tapes are from the Firm Series (they range from very easy to very tough) and are aerobic/weight training combinations. Kathy Smith is also great for strictly aerobics. And hubby encourages me to work out since he's seen the results over the past year http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
Is there any space in the house that you could convert to a workout area.. in the basement maybe? Or why not get a carpet that you can roll out to do your exercise on. IMHO your health is more important than any darn flooring.
Sandy.

He he he- Richard Simmons got me started on exercise! Yes, he can be a bit strange, but I like that not everyone in his video is a size 2. Me and my sister used to do his workout together and we'd end up laughing at each other. I still find that I like the gym better, though. There never seems to be enough room to work out at home and then the phone rings, the dog wants to go out, there's someone at the door and I have to run and hide- at the gym, I am in my own world and everyone is there for the same reason.

Hi Jessica,
If you are interested in finding exercise videos, you should check out www.videofitness.com. (http://www.videofitness.com.) There are consumer reviews for tons of videos and an active forum where you can get lots of suggestions and advice on exercise videos. It's a great site!

Fellow northerners, when it is too cold and horrible to drive to the gym, my arthritis is making me too painful to move! But that is the time to get what motion I can in. I love my exercise ball from Thera-Band and the Balance Ball Fitness series by Suzanne Deason. Christina, thank you for the video link I'm going to check it out now.

When I am actually inspired to exercise - I like the Buns of Steel Series. I know they are seriously dated now - prob about 10 years - - but they aren't bad. You don't really realize you are working that hard until you are done - and attempt to walk up stairs. ouch!

Jessica, one of the best tapes (series) is the step reebok. Talk about a workout! It is fun and do you sweat! I also have a slide board that I got a few years ago. I pretend I'm Bonnie Blair speed skating in the Olympics. It to is a really good work out. Especially for your legs! If you have a bike put it on a wind trainer. You can buy one from REI for relatively cheap. I make a circuit of it in my house. I do aerobics first then 15-20 minutes on my bike and then 15 minutes on the slide board and then sit ups, push ups. It makes for a great work out.
