I am about to start a Supper Club. One of our friends that we had talked to about starting a SC posed a security question. She and her husband do not feel comfortable about inviting someone that they just met on line to their home. Have any of you had an issues with this?
I figured we would meet at a neutral locale for our first meeting/get together. We would get to know them and then see what happens. You really never get to know till a couple of months down the road. While writing this my wife said the same thing. We still want to go through with this, but maybe do it through the friend network... oh wait, I have issues with them, they can't cook! LOL.

I can understand your hesitancy - I've met a few doozies via online dating services!!! However, everyone I've met from here has been sane enough for my tastes! And as you stated yourself - it takes time to get to know ppeople - I knew my next door neighbor for 2 years before I learned that her supposed dead husband was alive and living in another state...that her second husband was really her third, that she didn't even go to college despite her resume stating she graduated from one, and that she was having an affair - and this was someone I hung out with ALL the time - so maybe sometimes reaching out is safer than your usual circle!!! :D

Our group is six years old now and we all found each other here on this site. We did meet in a restaurant first to make sure there were no "axe murderers" ;) :p , and we are still together. Actually, we had a few people drop out over the years for various reasons, and we have found our new members by posting here.
We have also had new members join who were actual IRL friends of other members. Oddly enough, most of those people didn't work out. We are now looking for another new person, and someone in the group said they knew someone who wanted to join. But the rest of us all decided we'd rather have an internet stranger! :D So I posted for a new member, and hopefully we'll find someone.
The best part of "internet strangers", is they are people who are typically so different (in terms of interests/hobbies/social circles, etc), you wouldn't normally befriend them. So you really get an eclectic group of people together, and it's so much more interesting to get to know different people. It's one of my most favorite parts of my supper club.
So my advice is to definitely go for it.

My group also has been meeting for about six years, and we met through this bulletin board. Like Grace, we met in a restaurant initially - I guess to see if we were all OK! :) The mother of the first woman to host did joke with her to count her silverware before we came over. :)
I'm so glad we met this way, however - I've gotten to know some great women whom I would not have met otherwise. We've also gotten new members through the board as others have left.
So - I would say go for it!
Our group is all women and we found each other on this site. We initially met in a home and this has never been a problem for us. In fact we met this afternoon and in 4 years. with changing personnel, we have never had a problem.

I can relate to your concerns, and we took a chance. My husband and I initiated a supper club near Philly through this website, and we met some wonderful wonderful people - we just moved to CA, and dearly miss them. We became such great friends despite all our demographic variations! We had people ranging from late 20s to 50s, and always had a blast when we met.
Supper clubs are centred about food, and when you break bread with someone halfway likeable, you inevitably set your differences aside to enjoy the meal. Aside from the philosophical bend, we did meet at a bookstore first but that was us and another couple... the others just joined in directly.
Hope you have as great an experience with your club members as we did!
