LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -- The 20-year-old son of Anna Nicole Smith died suddenly in the Bahamas on Sunday, three days after the former Playboy Playmate gave birth to a girl, Smith's attorney said.

A statement from Howard K. Stern, Anna Nicole Smith's attorney, did not provide any details of Daniel Smith's death, and he declined to comment when contacted by Reuters.

"We have yet to learn the cause of death but do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor," Stern said in the statement. "Anna Nicole is absolutely devastated by the loss of her son. He was her pride and joy and an amazing human being."

Daniel Smith was in the Caribbean nation where his mother, 38, gave birth to a healthy girl on Thursday, Stern said.

He appeared in "The Anna Nicole Show," a reality TV series that aired on the E! cable channel.

Since being named Playboy's Playmate of the Year in 1993, the former Vicki Lynn Hogan from Mexia, Texas, has never been far from the public spotlight. In 1994, she married wheelchair-bound oil tycoon J. Marshall Howard, 89, after meeting him at a strip club.

His death, after 14 months of marriage, triggered a legal battle over his estate between Smith and his son, E. Pierce Marshall. Earlier this year, she won a U.S. Supreme Court decision giving her another chance to collect millions of dollars. Pierce Marshall died in June.

Smith has not said who fathered her second child.

What a tragedy. I wasn't a fan of hers, nor a hater, but I have heard her do interviews in the past where she talks about her son. No matter what anyone may think of her, it's a tragedy for any parent to lose a child.

How awful for her. Regardless of my opinion of Anna Nicole Smith (and let me assure you, it is not very positive), her son seemed remarkably normal and well adjusted--which suggested to me that on some level she must not be the complete nutcase she makes herself out to be on tv. And even if she is, I wouldn't wish the loss of a child on anyone.

NASSAU, Bahamas -- The 20-year-old son of Anna Nicole Smith died while visiting his mother in the hospital where the reality TV star and former Playboy playmate had given birth last week, a Bahamas police official said Monday.

Daniel Wayne Smith died Sunday in his mother's room at Doctors' Hospital in Nassau, Reginald Ferguson, assistant commissioner of the Royal Bahamian Police Force, said in an interview with The Associated Press. He said an autopsy was under way.

Smith arrived Saturday night in the Bahamas and apparently went directly to the hospital where he spent the night, Ferguson said.

"It would appear from our report that the mother had gotten up, saw him in the chair and he appeared to be sound asleep," he said. "She tried to wake him up, he was unresponsive, and she sounded the alarm."

Medical personnel arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene, Ferguson said.

Anna Nicole Smith, 38, gave birth to a healthy 6-pound, 9-ounce girl at the hospital Thursday, her Web site said.

"Anna Nicole is absolutely devastated by the loss of her son. He was her pride and joy and an amazing human being," a statement on the site said. It said that drugs or alcohol were not believed to be a factor.

Her son had traveled to the Caribbean country "to share in the joy of his baby sister," the statement said. "Please do not make any press inquiries at this time so that Anna Nicole can grieve in peace."

Daniel Smith was the product of Smith's 1985 marriage to Billy Smith. The couple, who met while working together at Jim's Krispy Fried Chicken in Mexia, Texas, divorced in 1987.

The son had small roles in her movies "Skyscraper" and "To the Limit."

Robin Bonnema, a spokeswoman for Trimspa, the diet products company that has been endorsed by Smith, said she did not know the name of the baby girl's father.

Smith married Texas oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II in 1994, when she was 26 and he was 89. He died the following year.

She then feuded with Marshall's son, Pierce Marshall, over her entitlement to the tycoon's estate before he died in June at the age of 67.

In the long-running dispute, Smith had won a $474 million judgment, which was later cut to about $89 million and eventually reduced to zero. In May, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Smith could continue to pursue the fortune in federal courts in California despite a Texas state court ruling that Marshall's youngest son was the sole heir.

The whole thing just seems so odd, and so sad.

I, also, do not have the best opinion of this woman, but I think she truly loved her son - which may explain why he was as normal as he was. Sometimes I think being truly loved by a parent can undo a host of ills.

I will be very interested to find out why he died. I know the family says they don't believe that drugs or alcohol were involved, so...that leaves freak health problems. I guess we'll have to just wait and see.

- Daniel Smith, son of the model and actress, reportedly suffered a "massive heart attack" on the maternity ward in Doctors Hospital.

- According to [a] source, Daniel collapsed and died. The source added that his mother made an unsuccessful effort to revive her son.

- While members of the press were rushed into the conference room, hospital staff hustled the baby out into a waiting van, while Anna Nicole Smith's lawyer, Howard K Stern, rushed to the hospital parking lot at the same time.

- The new mother was never seen, as she was reportedly whisked out of a backdoor exit. Photos of the baby wrapped in a pink and white blanket could not be taken, as all cameramen were diverted into the hospital conference room.

- Daniel's lifeless body was then taken away in a hearse through a side exit."

How terrible for her, ahd what a bitter-sweet time for her now. I can't imagine her getting to enjoy her new baby with the loss of her son. I say that because I went through post-partum depression, and it is really hard to be happy in negative, depressing circumstances. Not of fan of hers either, but my heart & prayers go out to her.

They said on the news last night that it was a heart attack. She got out of the hospital when they had the press conference, escaping through a back door. Not a fan of hers, but I can't imagine how hard this must be. What a shame.

She may never win "Wife of the Year" awards or ever be considered a brainiac but she was this young man's mother and I felt very sorry for her yesterday when I read about his death. No parent should ever outlive their child.

I wonder what kind of charges could be brought in this situation?
