View Full Version : Temporary bed ideas?

DBF will be having a houseguest for 10 days, and has no guest room set up in his house. We've figured out which room to use, but don't want any permanent set-up. What can we buy that will be relatively comfortable, but that we can stow or incorporate for a different use later?
I'm beginning to think that it would be just as cost effective to buy an inexpensive twin bed and then get rid of it, but maybe I'm just not seeing the better options.
Ideas?

Those blow up mattresses are great. Even though we have a guest room with a queen bed, we still have one in case we need it. They have gotten more sophisticated since we bought ours, but even the one we have works great. You can find them at Sam's, Costco, QVC or HSN, etc. and they come in all sizes. We bought queen so that we can use our existing sheets and didn't need to buy another size.

We have a queen sized air mattress (Aerobed) that we use as our second guest bed. Our guest always comment how comfortable it is and my mom always requests that bed over our guest bed. Before we had extra bedrooms, we always set it up in the office. It comes with an airpump and sets up in 5 minutes or so.
Costco or overstock.com are good places to get a good price on one.

For a long time we also had a futon in our guest bedroom instead of a bed - this way it could also be folded into the sitting position so that we could use the room for other uses (my craft room). Ikea also has a good selection of convertable beds.
I would buy an inflatable mattress. We bought a good one at Sam's. It runs on D batteries and inflates in no time and when you are done you just deflate it and fold it up and stick it in a drawer.

Canice - DH and I bought a very inexpensive ($99.00) fold up twin bed at Big Lots last year. We have lots of guests and have incorporated a pull-out sofa, guest room, air mattresses and the like over the years and found this to be quite simple.
The bed folds in half, clips closed at the top, it's on rollers and stores within a very tiny space.

Hope that helps.

I'd go for the inflatable over the twin if the houseguest is a full-sized adult. Twins are incredibly uncomfortably sized for them.

We have just recently tossed our old-school inflatable matress and replaced it with an Aerobed. It is actually very comfortable, and, in my opinion, worth every penny!

Am I the only one who read the topic of this thread as "Temporary bad ideas"? I spent about 15 minutes racking my brain for one until I realized my error.

Also, consider those foam-like fold-out chairs. I had one in college, and was great for when I had, um, guests. Much better than an inflatable, IMHO. And cheap! Any big-box store should have 'em.

Heheh. Trust me, Erin, that would have a looooooot more responses!
It may be time for a "What was I thinking?" thread, always good for a laugh.
Thanks for the responses; I'll suggest the aero but am open to any other ideas as well.

Another vote for the Aerobed. They are really quite comfortable.

You can get the new aerobeds that are tall as a regular bed.
I've slept on a futon once, and that was once too many times. Not comfortable at all.

LOL...Like a bad idea will eventually get better. :) Canice another thought: I've seen twin beds that double as ottomans. You pop the top open and voila - a fold out bed. DBF in need of anything to put his feet on when he isn't having guests?

I slept in a twin until I was 30 years old, and never found it uncomfortable at all. And I wasn't a small girl....
I will add to the aerobed recommendations. We have one at the cottage and it is comfortable.

DH gave up his room for visiting family at Christmas. Yes, he has his own room...snores really bad! Anyway, he spent a week on a twin size Aerobed we bought for the occasion. I expected him to be irritable from little sleep or complain about his back hurting. Neither! In fact, he slept better than he had in a long time.
Fast forward to 6 weeks ago: DH began having trouble with his back and wasn't sleeping well. He got the bright idea to get the Aerobed out of the closet and try it for a few days. His back improved sooo much he went a few days later and bought the queen sized one and actually *placed it on top of his regular queen sized bed*! Looks ridiculous but he *loves* it! So, I vote for the Aerobed. :D

Yep, me too!
I'd say go for the Aerobed. I don't much like them to sleep on but I am pretty picky given my neck/back issues and the time I spent on one was in a bad situation overall so my opinion is very influenced by other factors.

I would choose to sleep on an aerobed over a twin or a futon. If you are used to sleeping in a twin it might not be uncomfortable, but I always end up with a backache after sleeping on one (admittedly I do have a bad back though).

We have a good quality futon in our 3rd guest room and its very comfortable. I think if you have a cheap futon, it would be like anything else - you get what you pay for.
I personally love our futon and since it doubles as a couch it's even better.

Bingo.
I think they are surprisingly comfortable.
Of course, I was paying more attention to the coed than my mattress....

Before you blow the bucks on an Aerobed brand, try your local sporting-goods store for knockoffs. I don't own one, but when we were in the same boat (ended up going ahead & furnishing guestroom with daybed and trundle), I noticed that Academy Sports had Coleman (big camping supplier) inflatable beds for about $30 or so, whereas Aero's are often $99 and up (and that's for a twin). Good luck! If guest is very tall, twin won't work well; I asked tall sibling about this when I did my guest room. On double or queen, tall person can sleep diagonally.

I'm going to dissent here and say that I think the inflatables are horribly uncomfortable. I opt for the floor over them. I agree with Escher on the foam fold out chair/couch things. More comfortable than you think.

Last time he came we took the twin bed out of my guest room and set it up in the library. I'm no fan of single beds myself, but sometimes you've got to make do. I'm 5'9" and say he's my height, though DBF claims he's taller - he's definitely not hefty or overweight, so not a giant. I don't think it would be the end of the world if we had to go the twin route but, as I said, we're looking at options! We'll be using a small breakfast room as bedroom this time, so I'd better pull out the measuring tape before buying anything bigger! Thanks again for the thoughts and suggestions.

Hmm, I wonder what kind of "big box" stores I should look at. We don't really have any around here, so it would have to be a "destination" trip. I bet I should have checked out Ikea when I was there last week. Not the kind of adventure I really want to have twice in a year, but perhaps it's the way to go?

I have to second this. We have a futon we've used as a guest bed and also sleep on ourselves when it's too hot at night for the air conditioning to keep up. It's very comfortable and as Pammela said, doubles as a couch the rest of the time. I'd buy another in a minute.

Canice - check out Craigslist before you go and buy something. My parents just sold a roll-away fold up bed (wider then a twin, not as wide as a double) for $75.00. Maybe you will get lucky too
