Someone posted CL's recommendation for the best pepper mills a few months back. Now I can't find it. Any one know where to look? Also I'm interested in your recommendations.
Ah, methinks you missed our little debate some weeks back. In a nutshell (or peppercorn) the consensus agreeded that those eight-foot mills were a no-no, as they increased the chances of the pepper becoming old. The pepper ball had quite a large fan club due to ease of use and adjustable grind, and Deanna FORCED me to buy a mill filled with pepper that smelled like a horse pen! (Actually, it's an excellent peppermill from William Bounds, Ltd., available at Williams-Sonoma--also with adjustable grind.) Anyone else I forgot, feel free...

Pampered Chef makes a nice pepper mill & salt shaker unit. Two great things about it are 1)you can grind the pepper one-handed and 2)the grinding mechanism retracts into the bottom, so it doesn't leave bits of pepper wherever you set it. It's also very easy to adjust the fine- or coarseness of the grind.

Hi Laden,
I posted this same question on the old board and received lots of helpful suggestions. I decided to purchase a 'Chef Specialties' brand professional series peppermill. This company had been making peppermills since 1940 so I felt pretty confident they knew what they were doing. I chose the 'professional' series because it is built with a cutlery grade stainless steel mechanism to withstand heavy use. I have a 10 inch for cooking that I use all the time. I find the larger size it really easy to grab and work with. I just fill it 1/2 full to keep the peppercorns from getting too old. I also purchased a professional series 6 inch salt & pepper set for table use. I'm very happy with both. If you would like to check this company out, their web address is chefspecialties.com or you can call 800-440-2433 for a catalog.
Good luck!

Thanks so much Cathy! I checked out their web site and it's just what I've been looking for. I've had a couple of cheaper acrylic kind and they loosen up or crack after a few years of use. The price on these seems very reasonable as well. I was headed to Williams Sonoma but I changed my mind.
Do you happen to remember the exact models you have?

I got the Walnut finish 6" S&P set, their item number 06100 and the 10" also in the same walnut finish, their item #10150.
