I got back from NYC last night and I guess I had the worst trip ever. My relatives would not go out for dinner or drinks, went to bed at 9pm or earlier every day and the best thing of my trip was the time I spent discovering NYC by myself. I took the Greenwich Village Food Tasting and Cultural Tour and wow, what an experience. It was so much fun and I really recommend it. Chelsea Market was nice too, but somehow I expected more  I could not even find the Whole Foods Market Dave Lieberman goes shopping all the time.
DH promised me that he'll go back to NYC with me and then we can go out for breakfast/2nd breakfast/lunch/2nd lunch/dinner and late dinner till I can't walk anymore :o
Did I miss anything here?

That sounds good to me! I wanted to try at least one nice restaurant (like Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill) but everyone else just wanted to eat cheap all the time :(

Oh, we did that when we were in NYC in May and LOVED it!
Sorry you were in NYC with a bunch of stick-in-the-muds! :(

I guess we just missed each other, Dani!
I'm here for the first time since I moved, nearly a year. The occasion is the closing on the apartment sale tomorrow. :D It was easier to drive in with Tony yesterday morning, with both our Spaniels, to return on Thursday night as he usually does. I'm staying at his place in Hoboken, just across the river, and between the city shopping and walking to the PATH train, I'm already pooped out.
Most of my shopping has, naturally, been of the food variety so far. I went to the new TJ's, just two short blocks from my former abode, and it was a weird experience because it was odd seeing urban types and so many races in a TJs, because the ones I go to usually are in white suburban areas. The store is certainly smaller than the suburban ones, but still well stocked, and I loaded up on simmer sauces and cereals. (Their almond-cashew-ginger granola has one serious ginger bite!)
This morning I went to Gourmet Garage, and I'm heading down to PB, B&B and Eddie Bauer in a bit with a final stop at Whole Foods.
Mostly, though, I keep wondering how I lived this way for so many years. Hoboken is even tighter than Manhattan and when I woke this morning, I missed the fresh air, the birds at the window and my gardens. On the other hand, walking through the West Village, I got misty passing old haunts, walking blocks I've been through millions of times, and thinking of so many dear friends, long gone.

Dani, next time you go to NYC try Lamella in little Itlay....IT's FAB... and Mesa Grill, well I wasn't too impressed, but they sure were $$$$$. We also ate at a little resturant not far from the MET that I can't remember the name of, but next trip I MUST find it. It was family style, they had roast turkey with all the trimmings for $8.00 and it was FAB ALSO. We also ate at a barbque place in SOHO....and the Bagels and all the trimmings at EATS was wonderful...Of course we hit the delies Kratz and Wolfe's both wonderful, but Wolfe's in Manhattan was a better ambiance...
It is such a wonderful city...you must go back and enjoy. And Angela, if you live in NYC I'll def contact you next trip. I'm thinking March, last time I was there in FEB was a disaster, snowed in with a couple that I had had too much time with...they were too cheap to get a cab from Union Station to the met so they took the subway and went 10 blocks too far and had to walk back in 10 degrees with no coat or gloves...served em right!!! While we were in that wonderfully warm cozy resturant, eating roast turkey...LOL...

I'm sorry your relatives pooped out on you too! They must be over 50 (like me) and just can't stay awake that late any more!
My husband and son went to NYC over Labor Day to see a Yankees game before they move to their new stadium in a few years. We didn't do any fancy dining, but we went to the Brooklyn Diner (up near the south side of Central Park) and we all loved it. Everything was just perfect and the wait staff were excellent. Dinner for 3, with a couple of glasses of wine and two desserts was about $100+, but it was worth it. If we'd skipped the wine and desserts, it might've been only about $60!
Hope you have a better time next trip!

That's such a bummer, Dani! Why the heck go to NY for THAT? I would love to have been able to hook up with you...I can walk and walk and walk around a city all day! And no, I don't "get too hungry for dinner at eight" as the song goes.
Enjoyed the portrait, Bob, as ever. :)
