DH and I are gearing up to move into our new home in a few weeks. I've started thinking about what to send as a moving announcement. I don't really want to order from a company, but maybe get some ideas and try to make them myself. Can anyone share ideas or resources of moving announcements you've sent?

Thanks in advance,
Kim

You can cut boxes into postcard size pieces and put the info on them....I've received one that way before. I don't know if she actually cut up boxes or just bought those pieces, but they sure were cute!

My girlfriend made some, she had a stamp set from Stampin Up that is a truck with different stamps of stuff that you stamp to fill the bed of the pick-up. She used the one that had furniture. She then stamped a person in the truck (the head) and put we're moving on the front. She used cardstock that looked similar to cardboard (but is thinner, so easier to mail) and inked the edges to look more aged (darker). She then put some packing tape on the front and all the info on the back.

They were super cute.

I know you don't want to order them, BUT - I have to add this. I was looking for announcements on line, something to reflect what our move meant to us- moving from a congested area and a hectic life to the mountains and fresh air.

Well, of course, I didn't find anything. But I found the cutest announcements and I plant order some. You can actually pick out stick people who look like you- even dogs!- and put them on the cards. As soon as I have our phone service turned on in the new house, I think I'm going to order (need to put our phone number on them).

Again, I know you want to do them yourself, but I thought these cards were so cute. http://www.noveltynotes.net/movingannouncements.html I think that link should work!

We're using this photo (taken in our new backyard):

and having it printed on postcards from Vistaprint.com

Maybe there's a photo that represents your new digs?

Great ideas, thanks ladies!

Cangoss- love the picture. Too cute!

MrsReber- those cards are adorable. Thanks for the link.

TerriA and Lisa- Love the idea of using the packing boxes! I think I've seen that idea before, but didn't think of it! Maybe I should get a stamp made to make things even easier...

So, cardboard postcards will go through the mail with no problem?

Hi:
I got mine at Hallmark and Target and filled out along with sending a picture of the house. It was actually a surprise for a lot of friends as we build a house but kept quiet about it. So before going on a trip to relax after the stress of building and moving we send the cards. I did put "surprise".

I wouldn't try this without checking with the Post Office first. As cardboard is thicker than paper, it might (1) have problems going through the sorting machines and (2) increase the mailing costs. Just a thought.

Much happiness in your new home!

We did the cardboard - cut them out of boxes we had unpacked :) We had seen it in a stationery store and loved the idea, but didn't see a reason to purchase pre-cut cardboard for a ridiculously high price.

I'm pretty sure we used a first class letter stamp (not the postcard stamp) when we mailed them out.

We printed up postcards on our computer - with a little map of our new state pointing to where we are (compared to Disney  since that is what everyone always asks) surrounded by pictures that we took during the move, my graduation (it doubled as a graduation announcement), and of our new home. We'll be moving again in Dec to a less temporary place so I might use the cardboard idea for that move :)

Most areas have post cards--if you're moving to a city it'll be easy. Even my small town has ones at the art museum or the local historical society or any touristy area. Cheap, fun, and easy.

Of course, Hallmark also has some cute announcements :)
