OK, I'll do it! :D
Just got home from work, and nothing to report today, but I am running a 5K in the morning. This is the marathon/half marathon/5K that benefits our hospital and a couple of other charities. Several people from work were planning to sign up, but it looks like 3 will be doing the half, and I'm the only one in the 5K. Oh, well. I am sure to know a few people from other departments, and I don't talk much when I'm running anyway. ;)
I'm off to bed. Morning will be coming early tomorrow.
Hope everyone has a good weekend. I'll report back later.

Thanks for starting Kathy, I wish you fleet feet in your 5k tomorrow. You'll be fine and do wonderfully. And for such a good cause.
Things weren't all that fun down here today. First there's wind, then rain, then even more wind. Not lots of fun in my book. I'm definitely planning on a sleep in and rehabilitative day on Monday. I've already "declared" my intention and have a tacit approval of my plan to sleep the day away ;) (not that I will). Rested today and with the rest of the weather like it has been - winds, rain, and everything - that was probably a good call. I'm going to try and get out for a ride in Hampton tomorrow if the weather behaves in the morning. So other than that, I've got an early reveille tomorrow so I can go to our Dioceses meeting outside Richmond. Since I'm having a flare up of costachondritis I didn't sleep all that well last night so I'm going to turn in early. So until tomorrow: may you all have peace and I'm looking forward to a peep from the rest of the gang.
Until later... happy trails,
Les

Good luck Kathy!
Feel better Les!
I couldn't get into my running last night. I was on the treadmill (we were having that wind and rain too , Les). Something was off with my breathing. I think it was just the end of a long week. So, I held myself to intervals of 5 minutes walking, 5 minutes running for about a half hour. But I did some yoga poses before hand and did some inversion poses after which I think really added to the fact that I don't feel sore at all this morning. So, I think my goal this week will be to ocus on stretching really well, and not to focus so much on how fast/far I've run.
I'm going to strap myself to the chair and put in a good number of hours on my classes this morning. Then I'll stretch/run for an hour and by then the DH should be home from work. This afternoon we are going to see the national Geohraphic Explorer's Hall in DC and tonight we'll watch the Tigers beat the Yankees (I hope). Tomorrow we have to mow our lawn and hopefully it will be dry enough to paint the new shed we got this summer (moss green with cranberry trim). We also have a block party in the afternoon. Then, back to work. DH has the day off Monday, but I don't. So, a busy weekend, but fun.
Hi everyone else. Hope you're well!

Everyone's already talking about Monday! Whassup with that? Stop it! :-)
No run on Fri -- schedule didn't allow it. Running about an hour today. Beautiful autumn weather here.
Gotta run. Happy weekend everyone

Kathy - good luck in your 5k!!!
Les - sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. I hope that turns around soon.
2Hungry - I hope you get a lot done on your classes so you can enjoy the rest of your day.
As for me, I RAN 10 miles today - notice I said ran and not "did". There was no walking involved except for water and Gu. I'm immensely proud of myself :D . I stayed after and did some stretching, but I think not quite enough, I'm having a little bit of right thigh pain, so I'll have to work that out somewhere along the way today.
I need a new headlight (and it's covered under warranty, woo-hoo!), so I'm off to the shower and the Chevy dealership.
Hope everyone has a great Saturday.

Lori,
At first I thought you meant a headlight like you strap on when you run but then the part about the Chevy dealership cleared that up. :p :)
Congratulations on your RUN. :D :D

Les, I hope your weather eases up a bit. We've had some beautiful days here, so maybe they are heading your way next. Enjoy your sleep in Monday....that always sounds good to me!
2Hungry, hope you got your classwork all done. You do sound like you have a busy weekend planned.
Good job on your 10 miles, Lori! WooHoo!!! :)
Hi Susan and Mary and any that follow!
The 5K this AM was really fun. I have never been to such a large event, but it was really well organized. Also, the 5K route was for the most part flat with a downhill finish. Very nice! I came in at 28:17 so I was pretty happy about that and I somehow managed to snag 3rd in my age division. As I came out of the chute, DH said he thought I had done pretty well for my age group, because he didn't see a lot of older women come in ahead of me.  :p
The race results are here (http://onlineraceresults.com/race/view_race.php?race_id=4245) if anyone is interested, and my bib number was 3830. (You have to scroll down the page to enter it and to see results).
Anyhow, it was lots of fun, and now I can't decide if I want to do it again next year or sign up to be a volunteer, because that seems like it would be fun, too, at such a large event. Oh, well, lots of time to figure that out.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend all!

Great 10 mile run Lori. That's great that you ran all of it. I'm glad you added the bit about going to the car dealer for your headlight - I was a little like Mary thinking it was one for your forehead.
Kathy B - Thanks for your race report and congrats for doing so well in your race. 3rd in your age group is always good.
Pattie - Sorry about the funky run but smart call to not whack yourself and push too hard. Your yoga comments really make me think that might not be a bad idea. Maybe in my copious free time. How did you fare today with the nor'easter?
Susan - Thanks for rubbing it in about the fabulous autumn weather. ;) I'm glad that you are having the appropriate season up there and that you had a good run today.
Greetings Mary and anyone else who drops by.
Let's just say that things were but ugly around here today. I think there were gusts of ~60 mph today and there were places nearby that had 10+ inches of rain in the past 36 hours. Luckily for us that wasn't here. Conditions were so bad this morning driving to Hampton that there were waves splashing from the bay onto the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel - about 8 feet or more. When all was said and done I didn't get home this evening until 6:15 and it was windy and raining --- YUCK! No running production today but I had a great time seeing folks from all over the southern part of Virginia that I haven't seen in a long time and had lunch with a good friend from Norfolk (had to go to Powhattan west of Richmond to do it) and lots of laughing and smiling and hugging all aroud. So I'll take the communal feeling over a run or ride in less than perfect conditions. But it would have been a blast on the trail this morning with ALL THE MUD! :D Oh well, there will be other days.
Time to hit the skids - early morning (again) tomorrow... I so can't wait for Monday.
Happy trails,
Les

Hi all!
Quick check-in here. It's our Thanksgiving weekend and I have four days off.
In addition to all the socializing, cooking, baking, reading, and other goodness, I'm using these days to play outside as we've been having phenomenal weather (oops, sorry, Les, didn't mean to rub it in further ;)). For example, today I went for a 85 minute run this morning with my group and now my husband and I are taking the pup for a hike. We're also going for what will likely be our last paddle of the season. Perfect weather for canoeing and enjoying the fall colours around the lake.
Kathy, congrats on the second age group placement in a very short period of time! Especially impressive in such a big event.
Les, glad you met up with your friend yesterday and had such a nice time.
Susan, how's the taper going?
Hi to everyone else, and happy rest of weekend!

Wow, lots of excitment over the weekend, huh?
Kathy - I'm glad you had so much fun at the 5K - and a great race with placing 3rd in your age group, too!! We don't get many flat 5Ks with downhill finishes around here, but it sure would be nice once in awhile. In support of your DH, I'm no spring chicken and have a bad habit of trying to figure out my competitors age groups (especially in smaller races).
Natasha - Happy Thanksgiving!! Enjoy your days off and beautiful weather.
Lori - Great job on the 10 mile RUN! That's quite an accomplishment. Please remind me what you're training for - is it a half marathon? Whatever it is, congratulations on your hard work.
Les - Wow! Waves coming up onto the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel!!?? I've never seen that before. The news reported that you were having a Nor'Easter. I remember those and they're no fun at all.
I had a fabulous run this morning. My favorite very hilly trail, followed by a couple of flat miles. If any of you ever get to visit Nashville and are looking for a fun, challenging run, this would be the place.
I've got an aromatic Beef Bourguignon simmering on the stove that DH and I will be digging into shortly. My first attempt, so I hope it tastes as good as it smells!
Take care, all - enjoy your runs next week!!

That's ok Natasha, I'm fine about the weather comments. I appreciate when my VRB and IRLRB have great fall weather to run great runs in. It certainly looks beautiful up your way - enjoy the day off tomorrow and the remainder of your 4 day weekend. I'm going to appreciate my sleep-in day tomorrow.
Betsy - It was quite impresive yesterday. It sounds like you had a great run too - hilly trail, oh to live someplace like that. How was your dinner?
Lifted today per my normal and I'm planning on running tomorrow once I get going. I might be running home from the car shop after I drop the beast off (finally) or I might ride a lot on the way home. Who knows???
Have a happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian friends and a Happy Colombus Day to the US folks.
Happy trails,

Howdy VRBers. Is it Mon already? I'm waking up veeeery slowly today
Nat - Happy Thanksgiving! What is the traditional menu for a Canadian Thanksgiving? I don't know how similar it is to ours, foodwise. The taper's feeling good and I think I'm ready. Hope those good feelings stick around for another 14 days.
Kathy - That is *so* awesome about your race. Congrats! Extra nice that DH was there to share it w/you. How many people were in your race? You said it was big, but I don't know race sizes for your area. Our races definitely vary in size around here.
MNGirl - Excellent news about your long, continuous run! When is your race again? Dec, I think. Sounds like you are right on track.
Les - I have a tough time keeping track of your travel schedule these days! Glad you had a nice weekend. Don't be jealous of my weather -- they're predicting snow for Thurs!!
Elizabeth - We'll be driving through Nashville at the end of the month on our way to Florida. The few times I've been there have only been passing through :-( I have family in Memphis, tho, so should know the area better
Had a really good run Sat. 7 miles. Felt very steady. Sun was my last rowing regatta of the season, and it was a blast. I was coxing, so it was basically a rest day for me, training-wise. I find it more exhausting than rowing, tho! 12-mile long run on the schedule for today.

Susan - I hope you have a good run today!
I had a hard time falling asleep last night, so blew off my run this morning in favor of a couple more hours shut-eye.
For those who asked, I'm doing a 1/2 marathon training. We've actually got 2 on the schedule. The first is The (Dallas) Half, on November 4 or 5. The next is the White Rock 1/2 on December 9 or 10. We've also got a 20k scheduled for the weekend after the November Half.
After that, I'm probably going to train for the full marathon at Grandma's in June...to make up for not quite making it to the finish line this time. Unfortunately, I don't think my group has a winter marathon program, so I hope I'm disciplined enough to do it on my own....

So how late did you sleep in, Les? Hope it was very restful and here's to a good run today! :)
Natasha, sounds like a lovely weekend! Did you bake anything special for your Thanksgiving?
Elizabeth, Glad to hear your run was a great one. If it was a trail run, I'll bet the leaves were beautiful! Might even be enough to make me put up with the hills! :D
Lori, I'll bet you could find some people from your group who would like to get together for runs during the winter. Maybe there are others interested in the June marathon?
Susan, Hope you have another good run today. Glad to hear you are feeling strong with only two weeks to go!
Thanks for the congrats, all! The race was part of a Marathon/Half Marathon/5K. I know there are much larger events, but not necessarily around here, and it was definitely the biggest I've been involved with. There were 800 in the 5K, 2100 in the half and 650 in the marathon plus 40 marathon teams. The 5K run/walk I did last Sunday I thought was about 150 total, later found out it was more like 90. There were probably only 3 people IN my age group! :p Anyway, now I am trying to decide what my next event will be. Suddenly there are an awful lot of them going on. The Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot is under serious consideration by the whole family.....
4-1/2 miles yesterday. We'll see what today brings. Happy Monday all!
Leslie Ferguson

A fantastic day! Slept in later than expected (after 7 am  ). Ran already - not great but a good Monday run. Trying to motivate myself to do some personal things that I haven't been able to do when working the past couple weeks.
Susan - I'm glad you're enjoying your taper. You and me both on my schedule and travels. Every week I have to look at my PDA and firgure out what I'm doing on which days and how I'm goiong to get everything done. I'd take snow right now too - love running in snow, nothing better! :D
Kathy B - I checked out the site. It looks like it was a fun race. COngrats on a 4 1/2 mile run today.
I'm not sure how far I ran but I ran for 71 minutes. Started at about 8:30 pace and maybe picked up a little after that. I know that may be fast but I'm feeling a lull based on the lack of running training I've been doing. But I know that the things I've been doing are bigger than my running so I won't complain, just an observation.
Feeding time... til tonight.
Happy trails,
Les

Hey guys,
Thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes! Susan, our traditional eats are pretty much the same as what Americans enjoy in November. Good stuff all around! :) Glad you're feeling strong and psyched two weeks out.
Les, good work on the run and enjoy that WELL deserved day of R&R!!
Lori, belated congrats on the 10 mile RUN. As Kathy says, I'm willing to be that there are others who would be training throughout the winter for a spring marathon.
Hi to everyone else and happy trails! Today was a day for paddling and soon we'll go for a second walk. We've been cooking up a storm (my husband made a particularly good mushroom gravy yesterday), and I've been doing a lot of baking (incl. maple apple cinnamon cake for brunch today - yum).

Happy Thanksgiving Natasha!
Congrats on the 5 k Kathy. 3rd place is great!
Sounds like a lot of good runs happened this weekend. I didn't run but went on a long, long walk accross DC on Sat. afternoon. It was fun. I forget about everything there is to do in this city.
Swimming is cancelled today due to the holiday, so I think I'll just have a DOR. I think I'm getting sick, so I think a lazy evening is allowed.
Leslie Ferguson
10-09-2006, 08:46 PM
Jill - Walking across DC... brings back memories. Anything in particular or just seeing the sights before things get into the fall? I hope you enjoyed your DOR. Getting sick is not allowed either. ;) Honestly, I hope you aren't getting sick, just a needed R&R day.
Kathy B - Sometime IRL I'll have to tell you the joke about the running race with 2 teams participating - the Russians (Soviets actually - tells you how old the joke is) and the US. 3rd place is a great finish and there were more than 3 in your age group - I checked.
Natasha - Ah to be in Toronto in the fall with the weather nice and a good family holiday too. Your cake sounds teriffic as does DH's gravy from yesterday. If he's going to keep cooking like that you might just have to keep him. ;)
Tomorrow - all the fun begins again. Have a great Tuesday and a great week.
Happy trails,
Les

True confessions post -- I blew off training yesterday. Thanks for all the great wishes & vibes, tho! Doh! No apparent reason. Actually, I was feeling cruddy all day. Kind of a blah day, for some unknown reason. The grey skies didn't help. I did get a lot of work & misc things done around the house, though.
Today is the day for the long run. 10-12 miles. I'm heading out shortly, I swear.
Nat - Would love any tips on a good mushroom gravy.
MNGirl - I'm very impressed w/your race schedule! that's awesome. I'd think that winter is the prime running season in Tx, so I bet you'll have people to train with. Even if not, doing it on your own can be really rewarding.

Hi all! Thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes.
Susan, I'd be happy to give you more info about the mushroom gravy. How was today's run? 2Hungry, I hope you're not getting sick - how are you feeling now? Les, how was the well earned day off yesterday?
Greetings also to Lori, Kathy, Mary, Bethany, Seathyme, Betsy, and all the rest of the gang.
I'm off work today as well and am thrilled because the weather continues to be gorgeous (and is supposed to be icky starting tomorrow). I went for a hike and later for a lovely trail run at a local conservation area. Here are a couple of pics from today's run. I've taken so many photos of fall colours/scenery generally and of family and friends lately - thank goodness for digital.

Yes, I did get my run in today. Woo hoo! No longer have to feel like a slug. 10 miles. Felt solid. The rest of the week are shorter maintenance runs. The temps are dropping, but it's actually good so I can acclimate & remember how to dress properly!
Kathy B
10-10-2006, 07:29 PM
Really, Susan, when I think of a slug, I don't ever think "Well there is that Susan on the VRB thread!" ;) Probably a good thing to take a day off, anyway, if you weren't feeling up to it. Good for you getting in your 10 miler today!
Natasha, with scenery like that, no wonder you often go for more than one hike in a day! What a beautiful place to hike OR run!
Les, hope you had a productive and not too wearing of a day. Has your weather improved?
Jill, I hope you are feeling better. We were in DC at the beginning of the summer for about 10 days, and we really enjoyed it!
Yesterday I did some hills with an easy mile before and after. NOT my favorite thing, but it wasn't too bad. I took today off, because we are having rainy weather like Lori, although not heavy and no thunder, and also because I was watching my 3 year old nephew. I took him to see DS's HS band competition, though, so we still ended up sitting in the bleachers in our ponchos in the rain. He actually loved it! Was fascinated by the tubas (of all things!), and the rain didn't bother him a bit.
Wishing you all a good evening! :)

Suffering from foot in mouth disease as opposed to foot in front of foot disease...
Nat - You really make both LW and I homesick for the Pacific Northwest and the changing seasons there. I won't compare here and there (or anywhere) because it's beautiful here but I miss tall stands of deciduous trees and the leaves in the fall.
Susan - WOO HOO! 10 miles in the books and not feeling like a slug -- a double. Enjoy the change in weather, hopefully it won't be too bad the rest of the week.
Kathy B - The weather has gotten a little better but now we're headed back to late-summer conditions, ~80 by Thursday with rain/t'storms. But then it might be lows in the 30s on Saturday. Gotta love Tidewater weather. Good run yesterday and I'll give you a hint - 3-year old boys love rain and mud (coming from a repressed 3-year old).
Howdy Jill, Lori, Mary, Bethany, and ???
Unscheduled DOR. Had a good meeting over lunch hour after being inspected this morning (good uniform and appearance in my Dress Blues). Precipitated my staying at work to catch up on the stiff I didn't do in ~3 hours away from the office and ~ 1 hour of unproductive work time. Then to top all that off, a 1.5 - 2 hour meeting morphed into 3+ hours and I didn't get home until 10:30.
I WILL do something tomorrow - just what is yet to be determined.
Time to wrap and hed in for the night.
Happy trails,

Susan - good for you for getting your 10-miler in!
KathyB - I would have sat in the rain for a band competition, too :D . As long as there was no lightning - otherwise those tubas would have been REALLY fascinating!!
Nat - beautiful pictures! Have a mentioned that one of the things I really, really miss living in Texas is the full-blown beauty of autumn?
I ran this morning. It wasn't for the amount of time we were supposed to go - in fact I only did about 1.3 miles. I kinda feel like crud today, but I'm sure it will pass. The GOOD news is that I actually didn't let the hill get the best of me! I kept encouraging myself with thoughts of "if you could do it on Saturday, you can do it today." And, it worked!! I'll take the small victories.
Hi to everyone - happy hump day!

It sounds like everyone is trucking along on the running front. I got a good run in yesterday despite craziness of life here. DH is leaving to present at a conference out of town tomorrow so I'm not sure how much running I'll be able to do over the next few days.

Kathy - You crack me up -- thanks for not thinking I"m a slug :-)
Les - Nice job on your meeting intervals ;-)
MNGirl - I love your mental tricks to get you through the run. That was very smart thinking!
Well, training today is on the fence. I'm not able to swim today (which would have been ideal). It's been rainy & windy all day, so I'm keeping an eye out to see if it's ever good enough to sneak in a quick run. If not, I won't beat myself up. Will just need to be diligent for the remainder of the week (which isn't looking much better weather-wise). Oh well.
Leslie Ferguson

Lori - Good job sticking with it even for a short distance. Some days that's the best you can hope for - start running and after a short run you just say "today's not the day" and go home. Ah the mental side of running... gotta love it.
Bride - I wouldn't normally sit through a 3+ hour meeting and there were times when my attention span waned but there was enough emotion in the meeting to keep me in tune (budget and communication discussions at the internship church).
Susan - I hope you get to sneak out before the weather turns bad up there. Today is pretty iffy here but definitely better than tomorrow and possibly Friday.
However... not worried about fighting with the weather this afternoon because I trucked out for a 7 1/4 mile run at lunch. I'm continuing to have a sour stomach when I run midday, almost like my mostly empty stomach rebels against my runs. Still a nice run so I'm in for the day!
And another freat thing... I've got no meetings tonight so I'm home and cooking dinner  WOO HOO!!!!

You aren't kidding not sure what LW is going to do with herself this evening. ;)
edited to add:
Sadly, I had dinner alone (LW called and had to work 10-8). Still nice to whip up a nice, well balanced dinner -- spicy grilled chicken breast, Moroccan couscous with saffron, green beans, and salad. It's been forever since I've actually been able to eat at home for dinner except on nights when I'm getting home at 6:30.
Tomorrow night will be meeting #3 for the week - starting at 7 pm and I hope this is shorter than 2 hours.

Hi all!
Les, sorry about the sour stomach and that LW couldn't join you for dinner. Here's hoping for brevity at your meeting. Good job on getting the run in!
Susan, what did you end up doing yesterday? Your not in one of the areas getting snow right now, are you?
Paige, good luck getting the running in and tsaying sane while DH is gone.
Kathy, good job on the hills!
Hi everyone else!
Well, I didn't really feel well or sleep well yesterday, so I called in sick from work. I probably could have made it through the day, but I feel much better for the extra rest. I even did a little running and stretching yesterday while I was making soup for dinner. Yoga is Friday instead of Thursday this week so tonight I'm going to try for a long run as long as I make it through the day at work okay. I also have to bring some outdoor plants in though, because of freeze warnings, so that might cut into my running time. We'll see.

Well, no run for me yesterday. The weather really was cruddy, windy, off & on rain/sleet all day. Yes, we did have snow flurries! So, we've officially had our first snowfall. Nothing stuck to the ground, though, which is definitely OK by me. Since my long run was Tues, I figured the rest day was acceptable.
Today is much, much nicer. Will head out for a run after all my meetings. Shooting for about 45 min.
Then tonight....10th anniversary dinner w/DH :-) (Les, hoping I have a better restaurant review to post!) It's a very fun milestone to celebrate.

No run for me this morning. Our high is supposed to be 65 degrees, so I decided to run after my Weight Watchers meeting, instead. I may skip the meeting and just weigh in. Have to be settled by the time "Lost" comes on!

Back-to-back posts. Yikes! I had a lovely 45 minute run tonight. I've decided I'd rather run from dark to light than from light to dark.
Hope all is well with everyone!

Sorry you didn't get any sticking snow (if it's going to snow it should stick :p ) but at least you had your first snowfall - a great time of year for it. And you're right, resting yesterday wasn't a bad idea. Congrats on your anniversary - I do hope you have a better restaurant review than I did. 10 years is a special occasion (and after that they're all really special).
2Hungry - Sorry you didn't sleep well last night and I hope you kick whatever is ailing you. How were conditions up there? We were supposed to have cold weather tonight and this weekend but it's probably only going to be in the low 50s high 40s.
Lori - WW and a run... great~ Did you see Lost?
Weird evening. Someone must have been watching out for me because I was going to take a short run then drive over to Hampton but I decided that it would be better to just head over (it was about 5:20 - the meeting started at 7). As I started out I found out the traffic was backed up 7+ miles solid through the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT) so I went the "other" way through town (it was backed up too but not as bad) then through the alternate tunnel to Hampton. But that is a lot longer drive. I probably ended up getting to church at the same time (give or take) and it was 6:40. So not running was a good call. The meeting wasn't too bad - only 90 minutes but it still takes ~30 minutes to get home when all is said and done and tonight wasn't an exception. 9:10 as I entered the door. So no run, a moderately long meeting, and it's 11:15.
Here's looking at tomorrow and the end of the week!
Happy trails,
Les

Les - I had my nights mixed up! "Lost" was Wednesday, "Grey's Anatomy" was last night. I made it home with about 5 minutes to spare.
Rest day today - it was downright chilly this morning, (I heard 39 degrees), so I'm glad I didn't have to go out. Now, I'm assuming more of the same for tomorrow a.m., so I'm already debating my dressage for 12 miles.
Happy Friday!
Lori
