I read in Newsweek about the benefits of super slow weight lifting--the technique basically eliminates momentum while lifting and forces the muscles to do all the work. What I need to know is, for an ideal workout, what muscle groups must be worked (ie, biceps, triceps, and so on)? Lifting is my LEAST favorite part of working out. In fact, I don't do it at all now, but I know I should.
If the findings about super slow lifting are true, than it sounds like it's for me. Even I can't find an excuse to not work 20 minutes of lifting into each week!

Have you tried any of these "body pump" classes at local health clubs? They are about 50 - 60 minutes long and they work out your whole body. They focus on working one body part (biceps, triceps, legs, back, etc) for 4 minutes straight. Many of the repetitions are 8 count down/8 count up - which is a slow rep, but they also do some 1 up/1 down too.

I like these classes because they force me to complete a whole work-out and they are HARD (if you get enough weight).

I can tell you more if you are interested.

mandarin2j,

My husband is a Physical Therapist, and he has been doing some research into the super-slow weight lifting. One of his friends (also a Physical Therapist) actually started a fitness business in which he trains people to do super-slow weight lifting, and that is what has gotten my husband interested in it.

My husband has ordered a book on the subject, so he is going to do more reading, consult with his friend, and then design a program for himself and for me. So until he does that, I can't really answer your question on what all muscles to work. But I can tell you that he and I have experimented a bit with doing the super-slow lifting, and even though you are lifting a fairly light weight, you REALLY work those muscles! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

P.S. We saw the Newsweek article too!

Lisa-

I haven't tried any classes at local health clubs. I don't belong to one at the moment, 'cause I never go when I do belong to one. We are blessed with such mild weather here in Portland, and my dog is still such a very bouncy youngster, that I do most of my exercising (apart from yoga at a local meditation center) outside. I have barbells at home, and am hoping to create a program myself there, though. Thanks for the input! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Good to know that super slow isn't some crazy fad like the high protein diet, and has credible people like your husband and his friend taking it seriously. Knowing that inspires me to try to find a trainer who will help me develop a program I can do at home! Thanks! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
