View Full Version : Suggestions for the Sick

This is not your run-of-the-mill cold or flu. I have been out of commission for more than two months with a mystery illness that causes intense limb pain and serious fatigue. I have had every test in the book and the doctors have ruled out many serious things, but we still don't know what I have.
I have not been able to exercise for the past two months and I think some moderate exercise might boost my mood and energy. I have very little stamina, but I thought some of you might have been through something similar and could suggest a very modest fitness plan. I am also going to meet with a trainer at my gym to discuss this. I feel like even 15 minutes once or twice a week would be better than nothing.
Prior to my illness, I did cardio 4X a week, weights 2-3X a week and yoga once or twice a week.
Thanks in advance.

Gosh, Jessica, I'm so sorry.
If you don't mind my asking, though, have you ruled out lupus, as well?

I was tested for all kinds of connective tissue and auto-immune disorders, emilycat. There is no specific test for lupus, but the rheumatologist saw nothing that made him think I had it.

Gosh, I'm so sorry your not doing well. Could it be fibromyalgia? I don't know much about it, but from what I've read, it sounds really similar (and equally mysterious). Just a thought.
Oh, and I would suggest simply walking (if you're able). Even if it's only a few blocks. Some fresh air, seeing the world around you, and the movement/getting your blood moving can do wonders to (if nothing else) at least improve your mood. Hope you are feeling better soon!

Jessica,
I was thinking of you the other day and wondering if you had any answers yet. I'm sorry to hear about how things are going. How very frustrating. Do let us know how things go. Hang in there! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Thank you all for your kind words.
I was indeed tested for Lyme disease and it was negative.
It very well may be fibromyalgia. I was just reading in Time today that there is no test for this condition, but some doctors have developed a test that can indicate whether fibromyalgia is likely.
Grace, I am walking when I can get to the gym, as driving is a problem right now. Unfortunately, the fresh air here is about 10 degrees and the sidewalks are icy, so I am not able to walk outside. It should be ok in another 4-6 weeks.
In the meantime, we are hoping for an answer. Thanks again.

How about lyme disease? So sorry to hear that you haven't been well--and frustrating it must be to not know why!
