In case you haven't heard -

Magnitude 6.3 Earthquake Strikes Hawaii

HONOLULU -- An earthquake measuring 6.3 shook the Hawaiian Islands on Sunday morning, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

It happened at 7:07 a.m. off the Waikoloa coast on the Big Island, according to scientists at the PTWC.

Kona appears to have taken the brunt of the quake. Kona Community Hospital reported structural damage and multiple landslides were reported on the Hamakua Highway, officials said.

The quake knocked out power to all of Oahu. Residents reported feeling the shaking for more than a minute in some places. Residents in Niu Valley said the quake made items fall off shelves.

"It was an unusually large magnitude and in an unusual location," one scientist said.

A scientist at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said he believed this was the largest earthquake in Hawaii since 1983.

Yikes! Hopefully everyone is okay.

I hope so too. After the 6.3, there was another one of 5.8 seven minutes later, and possibly 20 aftershocks. I have Fox News on, and I heard this just now.

I heard Mt. Rainier (sp?) in Washington State and a 5 point earthquake a few weeks ago too.
ACK.
Don't like it.
Hope everyone is OK....

Felice...hope all is well with you and your family. I sent a pm to you. I guess it looks like power is out all over Oahu for the next 10-12 hours so hope to hear from you tomorrow.

Our office on Oahu just checked in. They said the center of the EQ was on the big island. Oahu did not have much damage---but did have widespread power outages. They said most of the power (at least on Oahu) had been restored.

Hi everyone! Just checking in to let you know that all is safe and sound. Thank you so much for your concern. I am happy to report that there was no damage here in Oahu, and just a small amount of damage on the Big Island. We did lose power in my area until late last night, but everything is back to normal today. The girls were bored but it was a great opportunity for me to actually sit down and read, rather than do housework :D I think is has actually been a good wake up call to the residents here that we do need to be prepared for a natural disaster. I think a lot of people were caught off guard and did not have the essentials such as water, a battery operated radio, or flashlights etc. Since we are in an area that is in an earthquake zone, a hurricane zone, and a possible tsunami zone you would think that people would be prepared, but no.

Glad to hear you and your family are doing okay. Its odd how sometimes we have to had rude awakenings to get us to be ready for things like this.

Great to hear from you, Felice. Glad that everything is OK. Even with as many natural disasters that we have here in Texas (10" of rain yesterday in Houston, a very flood prone area) people still don't act with reason or prepare for disaster (3 people were killed by driving vehicles into/through flooded streets). :(

One thing esp creepy about the Hawaii quake is that the Ironman championships are being held there at that exact time this coming Sunday. I don't even want to think about what would happen if they had all those additional people there, riding around on bikes during a quake or aftershock. Very scary. (I guess there's always something going on there that brings in several thousand extra people, though)

You know, disaster preparedness is something that so many people don't think about. I know that in the DC metro area and here in Colorado they start saying snow storm and everyone runs for milk and bread! Me, I always have cans of beans, corn, tortillas, cheese, water etc in my house and don't dare go to a grocery store during the run. At the most, I'll stop for gas so I have a full tank just in case I need to use it for heat/cell power and so that I don't have to drive to a gas station in bad weather and add miles to a trip I have to make already.

It just dawned on me this morning that I have a co-worker that is vacationing in Maui right now. Although I'm sure he's fine I can imagine its made for a slightly different vacation than he expected.
