Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

How's everyone doing?

Last week was very good again for the exercise - made it for my five days. The routine is getting a bit easier, but still pretty time-consuming and certainly challenging. I do find now that I've gone 5 days a week for 2 weeks now that it's harder to take a day off! I keep thinking that I need to be exercising! Which, of course, would be a good idea, but there's always so much going on on the weekends...

Eating however was pretty bad. So, back on track this week!! I've been stocking up on meat subsitutes (after reading the Soy Hot Dog thread on the Great Food Board) as a way to increase protein without all the fat. It's also nice to know that I'm getting a good dose of soy to boot!

And oy vey - I need to get back to drinking more water. I kept it up for a few weeks and have been bad, bad ever since.

Hope this week finds everyone well and healthy!

Hey, y'all. Hope everyone had a great weekend. As for me, I, too have had just a TERRIBLE time drinking enough water--I overindulged on the coffee over the weekend, too, which of course exacerbated my dehydration problems. I am determined to get back on track today, though, and brought one of those GIANT evian bottles to school with me. Other than that, things have been great--my runs last week for some reason were particularly satisfying and I increased my speed a good deal. I realized I have actually been running a lot slower than I need to, in the hopes that it would increase my stamina, but it turns out it really is not fast enough for my long stride/decent fitness level. I must confess, however, that I did skip my run yesterday, much to my chagrin--there was a brunch for my BF's alumni association and I indulged in the mimosas! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif I just had to, though, they are my absolute weakness. Well, I need to hit the books but am planning a five-miler this afternoon, what with the weather taking such a turn for the better. How is everyone else doing?

p.s. remind me about the water!
p.p.s. my ball is this weekend (where I am wearing the strapless dress); remind me about arms, too!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Well, I'm on track still, shocking, huh! I went to aerobics 4 x last week and was good enough in my eating. The scale has gone down a bit, now just keep it down, and moving down.

Obviously I need to get back to reminding about water! Whoda' thunk! So drink up everyone!

I had a good week last week. I worked out 5 times for 30 minutes and went for a 6-7 mile hike Saturday afternoon with my husband.

The only downfall was that I was not planning on hiking so long, and I ended up starved at the end (the snacks I packed were just not enough). So I ended up munching on a huge bowl of ice cream (my total weakness) while watching tv. The positive side to this is that I am pretty much disgusted by the sight of ice cream now. At least I know I won't be tempted by any ice cream all week.

My goal for this week is to try get up from my desk throughout the day more to stretch, climb up the stairs a few times, take brisk walks, etc...

Have a great week!!

Hi everyone-

Had a good week, though I still haven't begun weight lifting. That's my big goal for this week--to work in weight lifting either today or Wednesday.

My husband and I snowshoed a favorite hike this weekend--amazing how this hike, the easiest in the world (I've been doing this hike since I was four or five years old!) was really tough and exhausting on snowshoes. Great workout!

On water, I keep a 32-oz bottle at my desk and fill it up twice during my workday. I fill it with tepid water, which seems to go down easier for me.

Still getting my fill of fruits and veggies, so that's good. I could go for more salads, though. Too many of my veggies are cooked ones.

hhcowgirl: on increasing your stamina--back when I was a fairly decent runner, I found that hill work was the quickest way to increase my stamina. Five summers ago, I was set to run the Hood to Coast Relay with my family team, and I had been a real slacker about training. About a month and a half before the race, I started running hills almost every day. Not wimpy little ones either, but monsters that lasted for a mile or more. By the Saturday a week prior to the race, I was able to run from Government Camp to Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood--a distance of about 5+ miles on a 6% grade. The H2C was a cake walk after that.

Hello all.

Well, after nearly 2 months of being so good, I was a very baaaaaad girl this weekend. See about 2 weeks ago I step out for a run and with in the first 2 steps started limping because my hip hurt. I stopped and tried to stretch it, and continued running. Eventually, the pain went away, but I have been having trouble with it ever since. I stopped running and switched to the ellipical machine and the bike for about 4 days until the pain was just about gone. Then I ran 3 miles and was limping the next day. Now I am only doing the bike and taking advil. It feels better, but I still feel twinges of pain and am afriad to do anything else. However, I am going to soccer practice tonight which I know I shouldn't, but I really want to!! I have tried to figure out what is going on, but the only thing listed for hip pain on the runner's world site is the ITband syndrom and I don't really think that is what I have. Streching seems to irritate it even more. Does anyone have any ideas? I am beginning to think I will never run again!!

Anyways, I have still been excercising, but less. The bike is a good workout, but not as good as a run. The fact that I am at least doing something makes me feel a little bit more in control. Food is another story. I had a run in with a bag of peanut chips. Plus, it is tradition that I make a "full-fat" cheesecake for my husband for valentines day and well, I like cheesecake. However, admidting that I have gotten a little off track is the first step and I am ready to get back on it. I think I will have a yummy apple now. Hope others did better than me!

Kerri-

You should probably visit a specialist in sports medicine. He/She can put you on a treadmill and see if your stride is causing your problem, among other things. With a running injury, you don't want to just let it go--it's too easy to turn it into a serious injury that prevents you from enjoying running long-term. My dad, a serious lifelong runner (age 53), had a tendency to run through pain until 3 surgeries (two foot; one back) forced him to reevaluate his approach to injury. Good luck!

I did pretty well last week. Worked out 6 times, about 1 1/2 hrs each time. I was out of work last week and bored, felt I should be doing something, you know. I started doing squats and my legs and butt were sore for 3 days.

Eating wasn't so bad, though I did pig out on basil chicken at the Thai restaurant of Friday. I'm not beating myself up over it, though, since I worked out so darn much and drank more than 8 glasses of water a day.

My biggest problem is with food-I'm hypoglycemic and I have a hard time eating enough to keep me from being sick but also little enough so that I lose weight. I should probably see a nutritionist, but I have no health insurance, so it's not possible right now.

Kerri, I must second the recommendation that you see a doctor if that is at all possible. My mom just had nasty foot surgery because she walked on a foot that she just thought was injured, but was really broken.

Kerri,

I'm going to go ahead and beat a dead horse here and suggest that you visit a sports physiologist -- you really don't want it to escalate anything that could sideline you for months.

One idea I had -- before I developed ITB syndrome, my hip bothered me quite a bit; when I put my hand on it, I could feel it popping/clicking while I was running, and I felt a dull soreness that depending on the severity, would cause me to cut a run short and walk instead. Your hip is the origin of the IT band, and bursitis could be the culprit. That's all I can think of, though. What kind of pain is it, by the way? Dull and achy, or sharp?

Kerri--

I feel your pain! I am almost positive that your problem is bursitis--I had it during exams last year and it is the worst! Hopefully, though, I can save you the bazillion dollars I spent going the the Sports Medicine Center here by giving you teh simple advice that completely cured me:

First of all, even though stretching seems like it is exacerbating the condition, it is actually essential. Look on the internet for some hip stretches, but the best one for me was the hurdle stretch or whatever it's called. It's pretty self-explanatory, though. Also, my doctor put me on a weight-training program to strengthen the hips as well as the thigh muscles that stabilize the hips (although I thought it was bulking me up and have since slacked off). In the meantime, I would cross-train as you have been doing (I got addicted to the elliptical trainer during this time period) and use mineral ice or Bengay SPA to ease the pain. Good luck!! And don't forget to strectch--I promise it was the ultimate cure!

Dear all,

Thanks to everyone for the advice and the support. I know I should have come to this board a long time ago, but I really thought this would go away by now. I did make an appointment with a doctor for this afternoon and hopefully he can refer me to someone who can help.

Hi everyone! Last week was pretty good for me. I lost 2 pounds, which really made me feel good -- the scale hasn't moved in quite a while. I only made it to the gym 2X, but also took several long (1+ hours) walks with the baby in a stroller and also faithfully did some abs and arm work at home every day but one. Eating was also pretty good -- from somewhere, I found the willpower to pretty much completely cut out the skipping meals/mindless snacking to fill in when I get hungry that has pretty much been my habit since I stopped working. I too, however, need to be better about drinking water. For me, it seems that if I start the day with a big glass or two of water I keep drinking lots of water all day, but if I skip the water first thing in the morning I never really get started on it. Does anyone else find this?

This week, however, has not started out well. I am a classic stress eater, and 2 sick kids (again!), DH out of town (ditto!), car in the shop with a huge and unexpected repair bill coming, and my three year olds bag of valentine candy from preschool in the kitchen cupboard is not a recipe for success! Today has been better though, so I am trying to just put the last two days behind me and not let two bad days get me off track.

Claire
