Thank you all for your kind thoughts during my (now three-month) illness.
I finally went to a doctor who thinks he knows what is wrong, and apparently it is not uncommon. He said the terrible pain is caused by a secondary reaction to some sort of virus. My muscles ached and burned, and my sleep cycle was disrupted so I could never get into the stage of sleep where my muscles could heal. No wonder I was like a zombie all the time!!
He is treating it by regulating my sleep cycle and the pain should begin to dissipate (without painkillers) in a few weeks. He said I was right to stop exercising and I should wait till I am not in pain to get back into it. I feel as if I will never ever ever ever complain about workouts again because I now know that NOT being able to exercise is worse.
Funny, now that I have this diagnosis I know of a couple other people who have had this problem.
Thanks again for all of your support.
