On the "Pathetic Motivators" post, several of us mentioned that we avoided buying clothes because we wanted to wait until we lost weight. I've been waiting 6 years now!!! But, finally I know that I am truly motivated and that it WILL happen this time.

As I've lost the weight, there are a few things that I REFUSE to wear - things that I wore when I was heavier that just make me feel dumpy and awful. Is there anything that you all won't wear because of similar associations??

For instance, I refuse to wear leggings with baggy shirts anymore! Ack! I'm also trying to get more form-fitting shirts instead of only wearing shirts that cover my ample rear end. I realized how dumpy these were making me look.

When I was pregnant with my second son, there were certain maternity items that I could not bring myself to wear ever again - even if it meant having to buy a few new items. The one that sticks out are my denim maternity shorts. I remember wearing these LONG after my first son was born - I came to HATE these and never wore them again. Wish I still had them - I'd burn them with great joy!

Anyone else? I guess it's all a bit silly - to become so emotionally attached to/disgusted by clothes, but........what can I say???

Like kek, I also lost a quite a bit of weight. I went from a size 18 or 20 to my current size of 6 or 8. It will be 3 years in June from completion of the "diet". (I also struggle every day) My biggest "will not wear" thing is long skirts. I wear suits often at work, and if the skirt goes below my knees, I won't purchase it. I even have a hard time buying those really stylish sleeveless summer dresses that are long. I think I now have one that my SO picked out.

It was a lot of fun having to buy all new clothing. I probably have 2-3 things left from when I was fat, like old sweatshirts, and a couple pair of socks. And, now I have more clothes than I ever dreamed possible... when we buy a new house, it has to have a bigger closet! Gina

I know exactly what you mean. I favor fitted clothes: slim skirts and flat-front pants. I hate pleats! And no more loose-fitting baggy clothes. Ever!

I second SusieO- no pleats for me. They make my stomach look so big! And I refuse to wear baggy pants. I used to think bigger pants made me look small, when in fact the opposite was true!

It's very interesting- I am working so hard to gain back the weight that I lost during treatment for uterine cancer and I definately have alot of the same issues when it comes to clothes. I refuse to wear tank tops, shorts, spandex etc.. because I feel too self-conscious and I tend to get rude looks and comments from people who think that I have an eating disorder. It really is too bad that we all can't just accept our bodies the way they are huh? -Becca

Hmmmm... clothing hangups. I think everybody has some sort of clothing hangup.

My biggest clothing hang-up started last fall and continued through the beginning of this year) http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif. I had spent time inpatient for an eating disorder and after having to gain weight (not THAT much but still...) I developed a blue jeans hang-up. I am happy to say that I finally found some great ones and the hang-up has gone out the window (perhaps because I was finally permitted to maintain at weight with which I felt comfortable and with which my dietician could deal. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif)

And yes, pleated pants bother this bear as well (before and after.)

Becca, I think we can all applaud your disgust of spandex (except maybe workout clothes) and tank tops.

Isn't it funny how we have all discovered that those once beloved pleated pants MAKE US LOOK FAT!!! I am business casual at work and am addicted to flat front pants and cute shirts/tops. I too would not be caught dead (outside of the house) in leggings and a baggy shirt!

Isn't it wonderful? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I have to agree w/just about all of you. after losing 20+ lbs, (that i hadn't actually believed i had gained over the last 10 yrs) i was hiding in my clothes, ie: sweats, leggings w/long sweaters or shirts, pleated pants and shorts, never tucking in a blouse.
now i tuck in everything and like to wear flat fronts and slimming, form fitting clothes. i won't ever go back to wearing those kinds of clothes again.

I will never wear pleats ever, ever again. I am also very picky about where my pants fall on my waist (I don't like "natural waist") and about where shirts fall in relation to my hips-can't be too high or too low. I can't wait to buy some jeans that fit-mine are about 1-2 sizes too big and they make me look way bigger than I am. So NOTHING oversized for me,either. And no turtlenecks. Yikes.
It's not exactly that I chose to wear this stuff because I was fat and thought that it made me look slimmer, but let me just say that there is a dearth of fashionable, well fitting clothing for cute fat girls.

I must say that I am proud of my neck/shoulders after losing 25 lbs and weightlifting, so I love boatnecks.

I've got a question, though. Have any of you ever been seriously between sizes. Like, I can't wear anything from Lane Bryant anymore because everything's way,way too big. But the clothes in "regular" stores often aren't big enough (especially tops-I've got very broad shoulders). Anyone else w/this prob? Any solutions while I lose my final 25 lbs?

I can totally relate to your emotions. 2 years ago I lost 70 pounds, went from a size 20 to a size 8. I have been an 8 ever since (a struggle every day!). But absolutely will NOT wear styles I wore when I was heavy. When I buy a bathing suit, if it says slenderizer on the label - forget it! I won't wear ANYTHING over sized - will wear leggings w/ a regular length t-shirt. So no you are not alone!
