I bought two pairs of nylons the other day. I wore one pair to work, the other I kept on a shelf. I remember seeing if this pair would go with some boots I own, then I decided to put them away for safekeeping. Now I can't find them!!!! It's so frustrating. It's an $8 pair of nylons, but I'm obsessing about finding them. I've gone through my steps and looked through my closet, drawers, garbage can. This is driving me crazy.

That is a bummer...I HATE when I can't remember where I put something.

BTW, I cannot remember the last time I wore nylons

I do it all the time, and I really hate it too. What really stinks is that I spent a couple of weeks over the summer reorganizing all of my closets and storage areas. I bought nice boxes, made labels for everything...and I still end up with things I can't find. Drives. Me. Crazy!

All the time!

Only not with nylons - I hate nylons and would LIKE to lose them. ;)

The worst thing I did that with recently was the cashiers checks from closing out my sons' savings accounts in Indiana. I remember having them in my wallet and deciding that was a bad place so I put them some place "safer". Then we moved and I have no idea where they are. Fortunately the bank reissued the checks for me. :o

Yes -- and because it does I have made a great effort in the last few years to organize stuff together so that it's findable -- and it really is reaping benefits

Found matches when my friend needed one.

Found batteries when I was on the phone with a tech support person.

Found large lantern/flashlight when power went off.

I shove all bills immediately into a small drawer.

And so on in terms of small victories over the looming sea of chaos from which I recently ascended.

I do still have to hunt for things when I DON'T (for example) place the keys where I normally do -- which makes me realize how much time is wasted searching for things.

It's funny you say that about organizing. Nylons would go in the sock drawer, of course, but these ones were still in the package, so I remember debating where to put them...only to end up losing them....

Best way to find them is to go buy another pair! :p

I do this ALL the time! I drive myself crazy! So I have hit upon a solution, albeit it a drastic one...

We're putting our house up for sale this spring. (No, not because I can't find my pantyhose). ;)

I'm going through our material possessions, including my closet  and donating TONS of stuff that serves no purpose in our lives. We'll be downsizing our house and our lives to focus on what (who) is really important, and a warehouse of stuff just does not fit the picture.

I have a pile of panty hose packages which I bought on sale. Over the years I've worn panty hose less and less. Now when I dress up, I wear black slacks or suits with slacks, so knee-hi's work just fine. If I wear a skirt, I wear boots, usually black so I'll just need black pantyhose or tights. For the rare times we have a formal occasion, I'll wear a long skirt, so I won't be needing a large supply of panty hose for that. The simpler my wardrobe becomes, the simpler the accessories become too.

Foodfiend, you'll find those nylons when you're looking for something else, probably sometime next year. I do that all the time, looking for a hammer and finding that particular pair of gold earrings..."That's where I put them!" :D

oh I do this and DH just HATES it! But, don't let me say anything to him about his "forgetfulness" when he is looking for his _____________ (fill in the blank), which happens at least once a day.

This happens to me all the time - so I'm going to see an organizational guru this week. Not only do I lose things all the time, but I also "clean out" and "organize" and area on ly to have it be a disaster in less than 30 days!!! What I really need is an organizational guru to come move into my house-

I recommend flylady at flylady.net -- Rather than recommending a crash and burn strategy, she helps one incorporate organizational tools slowly -- building on them.

Gingerpow touched on this tangentially -- the more you have, the harder it is to keep it organized and to access - to clean, to find things -- too many possessions just complicate one's life.

I still have WAY too much stuff but I keep flylady's mantra in mind -- do I love it? do I need it?

Regarding the nylons -- on an early decluttering mission, I donated almost all of the ones still in packages, kept a few (as my life really doesn't require 50 pairs of pantihose) and consolidated in one drawer -- I used a lot of the old ones not in packages to stuff my purses with.

I just try to do this drawer by drawer and closet shelf by closet shelf -- in small spurts. And I make a conscious effort NOT to bring stuff into the house unless I really need it or it will really add to the quality of my life -- decluttering is a wonderful tool to help one NOT bring stuff home. :p

I also recommend flylady! I wanted to get my place cleaned up a few years ago, so I went onto her website. It was extremely helpful, and they have their own BB. Lots of people here have used flylady. Her main theme is, "You can't organize clutter."
Which is why I'm ticked off that I can't find my nylons in a bachelor apartment that has been de-cluttered!
