OK, I saw an old thread on this, but was curious as to what everyone was listening to now. I'm in the market for some new tunes to work out to-I don't have a whole lot of get up and move stuff. What I have been listening to lately -
anything by Beck
Fashion Nugget by Cake
Graceland by Paul Simon
anything by Rage
Half Mad Moon by Damnations TX
A lot of my CDs were stolen last year, so I'm slowly rebuilding my collection. I really wish I had a cd burner so I could customize a workout mix-I loke to workout to bluegrass and Cape Breton fiddle too (I'm not joking) but can't take a whole cd, but would love it on a mix. Maybe I'll just buy a Walkman.
Anyway, just wondering what everyone else listens to keep you going.

A great CD is "Shaking the Rafters", which is a gospel album from the 60's by the Abyssinian Baptist Gospel Choir.

I have hundreds of cds, and I'm sick of them all! Right now I'm in a Tom Waits kind of mood so I've been playing his cd's when I go on a solo walk, not exactly lively music but I love him and my dh can't stand listening to him when he's home.
When I'm on my stepper I like to play Primal Scream, anything by the Smiths or Bauhaus. When I lift weights or stretch it's Tori Amos and I'm loving the new Dido album. For yoga, silence is golden!

I love Tom Waits so much(Mule Variations is in my car cd right now), but I can't imagine working out to him..which CD? Rain Dogs (I could work out to that maybe).

I feel kind of unqualified to answer here, because I don't listen to music when I work out (I run, and listening to music on the road is bad, bad, bad!; on my day of the week off, when I cycle at the gym, I read a magazine) but the music that makes me want to dance is 80's stuff...you know, all those fraternity party songs (and I'm probably going to get all the names wrong here)like Centerfold, Eilene, I will Survive....they make me giddy http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I have to say Moby, Aphex Twin, Bjork, Tori Amos (I looooove her), Prince, George Clinton, even Nine Inch Nails!!! Anything to keep my attention.

JHolcomb, re: tom waits, Bone Machine is a great album to lift weights to. I often listen to his mellow stuff when I'm walking. I don't need anything jamming. What's your favorite album of his? I love Blue Valentine. Everytime I hear Kentucky Avenue I cry.

Jessica,
I love, love, love Moby! That's so cool that you listen to him; I absolutely love his music...I think it's just amazing. I went to one of his concerts here recently, and he played the Doors' "The End." I loved it.
Sorry, just had to share http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I know some people will cringe, but I really enjoy working out to country music. Even the slow stuff will keep me going on a run more than some of the pop stuff that's out right now. Lately, I also like John Hiatt for workouts.

Well, I have to say I mostly listen to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They get me moving. Other than that, I also have Kenny Wayne Shepard, the Police, and the Cure "Mixed Up". I need something fast to keep me going.

I really like to work out to Madonna, Donna Summer, Iggy Pop...anything that reinforces my pace for aerobic workouts. For yoga, I really like silence. Same deal for hiking or snowshoeing.

Smithereens "11" - that album ROCKS, and you can't help but want to move. Turn it up real loud!!!
Most recently I have been listening to a Latin group called Ilegales. They do merengue and salsa music, but with a slightly urban twist. Their music is so infectious that I defy anyone to sit still while listening to their CDs. In fact, we like them so much, we have purchased every CD that they've done, and there isn't a bad one in the bunch.

Believe it or not...my husband burned me a CD with a collection of AC/DC. Nothing like walking on the treadmill to Brian Johnson belting out "Thunderstruck"...very motivating! The beat to most of their songs puts me at 3.5 to 4.0 mph, comfortably.

I like to listen to books on tape while I run, but I find that listening to live music recordings is lots of fun because you have people cheering for you every few minutes. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif
Don, I love Latin music, but don't have many Latin CDs. I'm definitely checking out Ilegales. Thanks for the recommendation!

JHolcomb...where did you hear of the Damnations....I didnt realize they had branched out so far from TExas!
Personally, If I could listen to the DIxie Chicks over and over, I would never stop exercising (especially Sin Wagon).
We also have new 80's station here and it ALWAYS keeps me going! Its sad that Im old enough now that the music I listened to in middle and high school is old enough to be cool again!

emilycat-
I'm so jealous that you went to see Moby! He actually came to town a little while ago but I couldn't find anyone to go with. No one likes my kind of music! I can't believe he is so mainstream now. Anyway, I love all different kinds of music so this topic is interesting to me!

Leslie- I think that Rain Dogs is my fave. I love the songs Jockey Full of Bourbon and Gun Street Girl.
Kim- I heard Damnations TX in Charlottesville, VA. They were opening for the Meat Puppets, who are living in Austin now. I enjoyed them more than the MPs. Cooler energy.
I've really enjoyed hearing what everyone likes to listen to while they work out. I'm going to check out the Shaking the Rafters album and Ilegales. I did forget that there is one totally cheesy song that I can't help but move to-Hot Legs by Rod Stewart. I can't help it.

JHolcomb--
I hope you like Shaking the Rafters! I have to get a new copy because sadly, mine was stolen. I love the track "Said I Wasn't Gonna Tell Nobody"--WOW!!! These ladies are singin' about something!

I had a mix tape for the gym (which I lost somewhere http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif) and I had some White Zombie on there. I like Rob Zombie's stuff, though I haven't bought any of it, just heard it on the radio. It does get my feet moving- though they are moving much more slowly these days! 9 weeks to baby so the music at the gym is pretty important in order to keep my legs moving. They don't want to move much.
SandyM, I have that Smithereens CD,too! It is good at the gym!

Excellent choices in music. If you are really a rocker I love Rob Zombie "American Made Music to Strip By" It is a techno CD. You just can't beat it. It is fast paced and it helps me keep my speed up on the bike and treadmill. My sister-n-law loves Metallica's Black cd. My brother likes Jimmy Buffet Why don't we get drunk and screw. Enjoy

Gabbyh I'm with you. I love to work out to AC/DC. I have several of their cd's and it really gets me going. I also like George Thorougood (sp). I have the Godsmack CD in my portable cd player right now - kind of controversial to some, but it really gets me moving. I guess I work out better to heavy metal. Something about the beat. I guess maybe some of you can tell from my music tastes that I went to high school in the late 70's.
