Just an FYI for those interested in using yoga to improve abs and back fitness- to follow up on Sara Emily's thread on painful ab exercises.
On an earlier post on Exercise Video Junkies, Sara Emily provided info on the best (IMHO) resource for exercise videos- Collage www.CollageVideo.com (http://www.CollageVideo.com)
I recommend a series by Living Arts (try Collage or www.livingarts.com (http://www.livingarts.com) They have a series of short (20-25 minute) yoga routines focusing on upper body, lower body, and back care, which also works abs- I just found this one last week. It is gentle, appropriate for any skill level and can be adpated up or down in challenge level depending upon your skill (which of course increases over time with practice).
Yoga Zone's for Abs has two separate ab workouts of about 15 minutes each. This can be found at Collage.
Healing Arts, which is produced by the Yoga Journal, also has a great series. I don't see them listed in Collage, but a visit to the Yoga Journal website will get you to their store.
I think the benefits are much greater, physically and mentally, if you learn a variety of yoga (or pilates) positions and routines and incorporate yoga or pilates into your exercise program, rather than breaking it down into smaller parts to target a specific area of the body, but these tapes are a great supplement to work further on specific areas or perhaps a good way to begin to see if yoga is for you.
Enough of me- I just get so excited about yoga- it has made such a difference in my life- physically and spiritually/mentally.
