Woo Hoo. Go Betty, go. Give hairdo boy the business. She just needs to be careful that she doesn't end up in the bottom 3 at some point. She could end up gone. It looks like alliances are forming.
This was a great episode because they had to please kids and they had to cook for us normal folks.
I was glad to see Emily go, frankly. I find it interesting that some of the comments and outcomes made by contestants in last year's Top Chef, are getting more scrutiny and people are going home sooner. Emily's comments about hating kids doomed her I think. And her comments about TGI Friday's foods and her apparent lack of respect for the guest judge that was from TGI Friday's was her downfall. She didn't really seem to care that her food was too salty.
It'll be interesting to see how far Mike's cavalier attitude takes him. He seems to have worked at a lot of places so maybe he isn't Top Chef material for sure.

First off Hammster - love your tag line :) But then I'm a big Simpson's fan :)
And I'm sorry, but your quick fire is for 'man on the street' and you're making ice cream...doesn't take a rocket scientist to put 2 and 2 and know you'll be serving to kids. Come on did they not watch the last show?
I was really hoping that it would be Marisa to go. That woman just grates on my nerves. I never really noticed Emily because she hasn't really stood out much. Marcel is being set up to be the bad guy. He is very egotistical and young in my opinion. I don't he mastered his course in molecular gastronomy. I think he only dabbled in it.
And what was Frank thinking with that mushroom dish. It looked like something made with PlayDough. If that had been served to me I would thought it was done as a joke.
I like the creative side on this show more than the last.

I love Betty! She seems like such a genuine person to me. I am also glad that it was emily who got the axe. I realize that "top shelf" chefs are a different caliber- that should make these little mundane tasks a cake-walk for them. Instead they spend their time compaining about how they need to lower their standards. Come on. You're telling me that you cook 4-star dinners for yourselves at home?
I also like Cliff. He kind of fits in the higher echelon of chefs, but he had no problem concocting a winning ice cream with no prior ice cream experience.
Avocado and Bacon. Right, that's what I'm looking for in an ice cream.

I also really like Cliff - he seems to be a normal kind of guy, but he has been able to adjust to the challenges.
I had to laugh at Emily's comment under her breath about the woman who said her ice cream needed more sugar. She seemed rather low key previously - and I also thought she was being a little snotty about only cooking in 4 star restaurants - I mean, if you can cook at that level, are you telling me that you somehow are incapable of cooking "comfort food"?!
Mike is obnoxious - I hope he is gone soon. Marcel is just plain weird. I like Betty - she does seem rather genuine.

Mine too! She's very condescending or something.
I also like Betty and Cliff!
I didn't watch this show last year but am enjoying it this year. I do admire people who can create inventive food so quickly. As someone who needs recipes to cook, that just seems like a fantastic skill.

I came to the Top Chef party late, but I'm so glad I made it! I really do like this show...there's a British version called Master Chef, but it's pretty watered down in comparison.
I was glad to see Emily go, too, but I was more hoping it would be Marisa or Michael. Mike's just a jerk and a doof, and I think he would have been out the door this week had Emily done just one iota better. I'm ready for Marcel to go at his earliest convenience, too. I coudn't believe it when What's-her-fruit (Elia) told him that she'd always have his back if anyone picked on him.
I'm a total Mary fan, but I agree that she'd better be vigilant. I'm afraid that her "in-yer-face" attitude may come back to haunt her at some point. Right now, she's just outspoken, but I see the potential for her to turn into a total b!tch if she becomes inclined. I hope she doesn't, tho...I'd like to see her take home the gold.

The British Master Chef is gross since the judges talk with their mouths full...and the food is not what I'd eat. I am starting to really like this season's Top Chef, and was glad Emily left after some of her nasty remarks. If those remarks were taped after she was cut, then she is really letting her emotions rule. I was dying for some of the fruit salad last night. If the firemen liked it, then I'm sure I would!

Eww...I have to agree with you about the judges. Not only do they talk with their mouths full, but they take such huge bites! British food just does nothing for me, either. But the corn dish that someone made last night really looked good, too.

Bwa! When Betty couldn't get her sandwiches to grill I kept thinking "Karma!"
I like Betty but she didn't need to jump all over Marcel.
Sam is smokin' hot and his dish looked amazing! Fridays would never do anything with that many fresh ingredients.
What was that mushroom forest of Franks? Who thought that looked good?
Check out Marissa HERE (http://www.marisachurchill.com/)
Is THAT really necessary? I mean think of the burns!
HERE (http://www.chow.com/stories/10194) is an interview with Emily. She's riding the bitter bus all the way home.
I watched one episode of Master Chef and didn't care for it.

I'm just watching the show again, and it reminded me how snarky Marisa was about Cliff winning the quick fire challenge. "Oh, I don't think his winning had anything to do with the quality of his food." Excuse me??? I thnk it had everything to do with it! There may have been little girls there who thought he was cute and voted that way, but please....he had a good product. Talk about your sour grapes.

Marissa is a whiner, for sure. That pouty face is getting old, quick. She needs to stop blaming others for her issues. She's supposed to be a pastry chef and makes bricks instead of panna cotta. Sheesh!!

Wow. I just listened to the interview with Emily - she REALLY is venting! And, it is ironic that her loss is everybody else's fault. I'm kind of glad she got kicked off if this is her attitude.

Right now I am liking Cliff best. And what was with Mike who took 2 cheeses out of his shopping supplies because he was over the spend limit but kept the $8 beer that was for his own consumption. He can't be that into it if that's how his priorities fall!

DH and I went to TGIF for lunch today and had Betty's winning soup and sandwich. It was really tasty, particularly the soup. Great on a cold day :) I nabbed the recipes from bravotv so I can make them at home.

it just shocks me that marissa does so poorly so often with desserts if she's a pastry chef!
i thought all of the top 3 dishes looked amazing! i wanted to eat the fruit dish - it looked soooo good!
i like betty, cliff, ilan, and sam. marcel and marissa drive me nuts, and mike is gonna get himself in trouble SOON!

Oh man - I go to Seaside Lagoon sometimes with my kids and I would have loved to have been there when they were doing the ice cream tasting! I bet they filmed this in late July because we had a terrible heat wave then. I even got dehydrated which I had never been before. That would have been tough doing what these guys did in that heat. No wonder they were all so grumpy.
Marissa is annoying but I was thinking that she might get top 3 with her TGI Fridays dessert. One guy said it was great and that they needed something like that on their menu.
I was also thinking it was karma when Betty couldn't get the grill hot enough to grill up her sandwiches quickly. I would have moaned and groaned too if I wanted to do onion rings and the fryer wasn't hot enough. Were they pissed at Marcel because he was saying it was the fault of the guy who went before him?
I couldn't believe the interview with Emily!! Her comments on Padma are too funny as well as the woman who was missing sugar. "She should want to miss sugar!" I was NOT surprised to learn that she is friends with Stephen from season 1. They are two peas in a pod.
This was an episode that made me want to go online and get recipes. I want to try Betty's soup!

According to the recipe for Sam's Salad, everything is pureed and poured over spinach? That's really not what I thought the salad was about.

DW and I went to TGIF tonight and tried Betty's soup and sandwich. TGIF is calling it "Tuscan Portobello Melt". They also have a "Tuscan Chicken Melt" which has chicken instead of the portobello in case you don't want mushrooms.
I had the original and DW had the chicken. Sandwiches were awesome! Plenty of melty cheese, lots of filling and bread was crunchy with just the right amount of "grease" on the outside of the bread. mmmmm, grease. Ahhhhhhgghhh.
The soup was quite tasty too. Maybe a touch sweeter than I anticipated, but it went good with the sandwich. A bit of a knock on Fridays is that the soup could have been hotter. It was warm, like hot chocolate that you can drink right away, but DW I thought it could have been hotter. That may have just been the particular restaurant's fault and not really the recipe itself.
It's pretty cool to be able to sample a dish that came out of the show. I think it's a great addition to Friday's menu.

I'm going to make Betty's sandwich today.
I'm going to cheat and buy either tomato or roasted red pepper soup at the deli :p

We watch both Top Chef and Masterchef.
Masterchef is a little strange. Some of their ingredients are too way out for me. And it kills me the way all desserts are call "pudd". Yes, the judges tend to talk with food in their mouths and it is annoying. Watch the way they put food on their forks too. Hmm. It's kind of interesting how they tell what each person does for a real living and why they want to be Master Chef, but beyond that there really isn't any "personal" stuff going on. I'd like to see Mark win, but he had a tough time on the last episode.....
As for Top Chef - Marcel is the foiler. He's got twice as much hair as anyone ever deserves to have. AND a big mouth to go with it. Young and mouthy.
Betty is too cool. I was glad to see her win with her soup and sandwhiches, and keep her cool when making them even when the grill didn't get hot enough. Someone said Emily is friends with Stephen on last season? Too funny! (never liked him either!)
I miss Katie though. This new chickie just doesn't have the class that Katie does.

I think that the site got the directions mixed up. That the Spicy Mint Chimichurri should be processed until smooth and then the diced fruit gets combined with the chimichurri.

I made Betty's roasted red pepper soup on Sunday and it came out awesome. I used 1 cup of heavy cream and 1 cup of FF half and half (since I needed to use it up) and it was still plenty rich and satisfying. Can't wait to have the leftovers with a sammich!
