I don't "schedule" days off, but there are some days when I get home from work and I am just too darn tired to work out. So I don't. And yes, I actually take the day off -- meaning, I stay home and cook or just plop down on the couch in front of the TV for the evening. It's usually only once or twice a week, though. I try to get to the gym or kickboxing class at least 5 days a week.

Friday is my day off. I work all day, and then Friday night is sort of "date night" with my husband. Lately I've been missing a night during the week as well because of appointments or working on side projects (I'm designing wedding invitations for a friend), but I don't feel bad about it. Sometimes things just come up!

I take one day "off" a week from running; usually the day after my long run, I cycle for about an hour. It's so refreshing to give my legs that break.

Emilcat, you must be in seriously good shape!! My main work out most days is biking for 1/2 hour!! For you one hour of biking is your day off!! Wow! that is admirable.
Anyway, on my days "off" I usually take the dog for a 2 mile walk. It is relaxing and not at all strenuous as he likes to stop and pee more than he likes to walk!

Generally I try to fit my workouts into 4 or 5 days during the week. I really don't like going on weekends so that the whole family can spend time together - plus we often have plans. This week, however, as sometimes happens, I missed a couple of days and will have to go in on Saturday if I want to get my routine in. My long way of saying I usually take 2 days off.
I am still struggling to get some continuity to my workout schedule. I am attempting 5 days but it doesn't always happen.

OK- in an attempt to push some more unpleasant posts down the ladder, I've decided to come to you folks with a question that's been on my mind for the past few days.
How many days off do you take each week from your work-out routine? And do you really take time off, as in no exercise or do you switch from something more high impact (like running) to something less taxing (like yoga)? I'm really interested to know what y'all do. Personally I end up taking one day off just due to my crazy schedule but I do have one lighter day a week where I do yoga and pilates instead of cardio.

I take aerobics 4 days and a mat class on the 5th. We are remodeling our 1/2 story and we do that basically 9-5 on Sat and Sun. So I don't take a day off. I don't expect that to continue but a few weeks. But then I will be starting golf twice a week. I do walk so I count this as excerise if not cardio.... And I am ready to play!!!

Good question! I usually take 2 days off per week but they aren't scheduled. I like to work in the yard or take the dogs for a walk on my off days. I have been doing step aerobics for something like 13 years. I don't think I get any kind of benefit from these classes anymore, but I really love it. Exercise is supposed to be fun right? I like to go just to see my friends and I figure that it is better than nothing - this is sometimes my off day activity.
For those of you who do aerobics classes as your primary exercise - that is great! That is what I did for years and it got me in great shape. Doing classes does help your cardiovascular system and can be the 'gateway' to doing other activities.

I tried working out 5/7 but it is just too hard to get the rest of life done... and play on cooking light ..lol!! Anyway.. all I have read it is good to exercise.. strength & aerobic.. but alternate walking the dog.. the body gets used to a routine and then plateaus.. so that is my schedule.. 3/7 .. walk the dog.. go on hikes.. play w/the dog..etc.. and makes me feel better about it all... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gifBarbra

I can't say I have any special routine I follow; I just try to be as active as possible and not go too many days in a row without some form of exercise. A typical week involves going to an aerobics or strength/weight training class a couple of times, going to my modern dance class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, doing some walking either with my husband or my dog or both (when we walk the dog, it's usually a slower walk), and I even count work around the house and in the yard as activity... I have "off" days when I end up not doing any exercise, but I try not to have too many of these consecutively.

I really don't plan off days, but I'm not hard on myself when they occur. Instead, if I really don't feel like working out, I'll change what I do, or do half my workout...or even just go outside and walk for a mile or so. It really helps. I do keep a calendar with symbols to show what I've done that day--I enjoy counting the number of "days off" I have in a year.
