Emilycat, I emailed you privately yesterday at the email address listed in your profile, but it occurred to me that it might not be current anymore. Anyway, in case you got it and just chose not to respond, sorry for bugging you again!

Here's my question, directed at long-distance runners (since I know you do marathons, I directed it to you, but others' advice is always appreciated). Can you recommend any good books, articles, websites, etc. that offer training programs for someone interested in long-distance running (1/2 marathon+) who can only run 2-3 times a week? I've looked at training programs, primarily for marathon distances, but they always have 5-6 days (at least) of running fairly considerable distances. I get horrible medial shin splints (that haven't been alleviated even with the best motion-control shoes, custom orthotics, and PT) if I run more than 2-3 times a week, and I absolutely cannot run two days in a row. My long-term goal for next year or the year after is to do a 1/2 Ironman, but the 1/2 marathon distance is completely daunting. I feel like it would take me years to reach that distance since I can only run 2-3 times a week -- improvement and building endurance would be SLOW. 2 times is typical, 3 is sometimes too much.

Any thoughts?

I believe Jeff Galloway has a training program for marathons which calls for running 2X a week for about 30 minutes, with a third run each week which gets progressively longer. I am not a long-distance runner, but know several people who have trained for marathons with his program, which I am sure could be adapted for half-marathons. He has a website at www.JeffGalloway.com (http://www.JeffGalloway.com) -- you can probably find more information about the program there (I hope my understanding of how his program works is correct or, if not, that someone else can help you).

aggie,

I'm so sorry! No, you definitely weren't bothering me...I was planning to respond; I just like to procrastinate http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I actually haven't had a chance to look through my years of issues of Runner's World, but I know I've seen some running plans for 3 days per week of running (which I really think might be a minimum for building up to half-marathon distance); I'll try to find some stuff for you tonight http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Emily

clairea: Thanks! I'll check out that website.

emilycat: Thanks, also! No problem about procrastinating. I just wasn't sure that you had gotten my email. Anything you happen across from Runner's World would be great!

Just a couple of notes if you all don't mind~ www.coolrunning.com (http://www.coolrunning.com) (sorry, don't know how to make it a hyperlink!) is a great source for races and general running information. I swear by Runner's World too, like Emily. Happy running http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
