View Full Version : What do you want for Christmas this year?

I'm thinking about asking for a video IPod.
Does anyone have one? Use one? My most technological thing is my cell phone so I'd hate to get something that I can't figure out how to use.

I've never used one Debbie but I'm sure they can't be that difficult to conquer :D
I'm not sure what I want...I always want shoes and purses, but Chaz usually doesn't venture into those two worlds :) I would love time, but too bad you can't buy that! A nice pampering day somewhere would be nice, a cooking class or a walking tour. I wouldn't mind something sparkly (within our budget) or a romantic dinner out :Dh

So, my gift list has a wireless computer and a headlight and tail light from Santa. The computer I want is pretty cool in that both the speed sensor and the cadence sensor are wireless. So, not a lot of wires cluttering up the frame of the bike. We are also in the beginning stages of taking bids for a landscaping job of our front yard. We are going with a Mediterranean theme since we are in San Diego.

I got a combined bday/Christmas gift from my parents already, so I'm done. :) If I had additional items, it would be a new sleeping bag or other camping gear.

Hammster-good pick-I have a CATEYE (I think that is what it is called) and love it-and most of my teammates also have this brand--some wireless some not (mine is not since I live in the city and when you ride near the t-or other electric areas it will mess with the computer-and there is nothing worse than going for a 60 mile ride and not having any idea actually how far you have gone!!! Most bike stores will have these!!!
What am I asking for....new synthetic down jacket to go under my ski jacket, maybe some new gym pants, was thinking of the pink polar heart rate monitor-but we will see, oh a big thick hooded sweatshirt-want a snowboard-but not going to ask for it this year, and maybe some new sneakers-but we will see!!! I really want a new camera-since mine is such a pain in the butt, but since that was my b-day present 2 May's ago, I don't dare ask for another one:^)
Chefzhat--I haven't heard a lot about the iPod video, but I would ask around before you buy one-except for the 1st iPod and the mini- all the others have had a lot of problems that they have had to iron out so since this is so new I woudl just make sure noone has problems with them--both of my roommmates and a bunch of friends have had a lot of problems with the nano and the shuffle just doesn't hold up at all! I love my mini and don't think I will trade it out until it absolutely dies!!!
Great presents! Oh and I want to ask for some cooking stuff, but not sure what to ask for--La Creuset (sp) seems to be the big brand around here-but don't know a lot about it so not sure....anyone getting anything specific for cooking/baking????

What do you want to do with your cooking stuff? Saute, bake casseroles, what? If you share that, then many of us would be quite happy to help you fill out a wish list. :)
I am asking Santa for a second pressure cooker (a smaller one), so that I can p'cook two things at once (main + veggies) on a busy night.
I also would like the new Joy of Cooking book.

I asked A. to fix my grandfather. :p
No, my grandmother was an artist, and she made a plaster sculpture of my grandfather, in his handsome and bony youth. Only, it's plaster, and about seventy years old by now, and so the green finish is all chipped, and worse, the lobes of both his ears have broken off somehow and got lost.
Anyway, A. trained in sculpture, back in university, so I asked him if there was any way he could fix the damage, and then recast the sculpture in something more lasting. He's trying to figure out how to do that; ciment fondue, he says, would be best, only plaster has to be copied with a rubber mold, and ciment fondue degrades that...
I have no idea. I just listen with a blank expression when he talks about it. But that's what I asked for. I can't think of anything else I particularly need.

My 1 1/2 year old ipod died without any warning while it was sitting on a treadmill last year, so I'm no help in that department. I've sworn them off (but DH just got a new nano, which seems to work fine - so far).
I'm hoping for a handheld GPS unit so we can go geocaching with the family. I also would like a few camping supplies since we're about to take the Brownies on their first (of many!) camping trips next spring - stove, sleeping bag, etc. We have a ton of camping stuff already, but I use DH's bag, and we borrow my SIL's stove.
Oh - and I need new drapes for my office (which used to be the "formal" living room - so it's right next to the front door). I'm hoping my mom will pitch in for those, since they are so dang expensive!

Well I don't think anyone will be buying it for me, but I would love a treadmill or a spin cycle. I am taking DD and DS to France, England and Scotland, so that is our family Christmas.

Christmas is a non-gift event here, so I haven't really considered the possiblities,
The iPod video sounds really cool; I was looking at it a couple weeks ago. Of course, I don't even have a regular iPod!
If I could have anything I wanted, I woudl choose a new computer. Our current one we purchased our first Christmas together, six years ago. It is practically obsolete now.

I want skis but I don't think that's going to happen, especially since the ones I think I want list at $800. Other than that, I need pots and pans. My only decent one is my Le Creuset. So, I need saute pans, sauce pans etc.
I can always use clothes and shoes they are always welcome as well.

I kind of did the same thing!
I want:
a Northface backpack, the kind made for women
2nd season Grey's Anatomy
a new umbrella
The last seven years of my life back
money for school
Oh, and I'd like a certain man, too...
Yeah, that covers it.

I'd really like a job, in a good clinic, with the confidence in myself that I'll be a good vet and won't kill anything (by accident).
I'd love for DF to be inspired by something and figure out what he wants to do with his life. Not because I think he should, but because it's killing him to be wandering aimlessly in this super-goal-oriented world.
But since those things are hard to get into a box and wrap, I'd settle for a nice laptop, a PDA, or an iPod Shuffle. The new teeny tiny one. Or a teeth-whitening package from the dentist before the wedding would be kind of a fun splurge, too. Then I'd look like this ---> :D

For Christmas this year, I've told DH that he's buying me an herbal facial peel. It's pricey, but I know several people who have had it with excellent results. So, that's what I'll be doing at 8:30 a.m. on December 26. DH wanted to buy me jewelry, but I want this more.

I got the video iPod for my birthday in September. I love it!! The screen actually has good resolution and is amazingly clear. I've been watching The Daily Show and Bones on it. :p
Really what I want is for my family (especially DBF) to think about me and what I like and find something for me that is meaningful - without following a gift list. But if the pressure is on and they need a little inspiration, I wouldn't refuse a La Cruset dutch oven or gift certificates for clothes (I've lost 50 lbs and am on the verge of going from plus sizes to misses! :D).

I have one and love it! (I'm uploading music right now). It's so great for the gym. I bought an armband from eBay for $5. I have almost my entire music collection on it and I've only used 8GB (of 20GB).
For Christmas, the only thing I've asked for is Martha Stewart's new Homekeeping Handbook.

OMG I totally sympathize! DBF is actually really good at getting me great gifts, but there are times when he asks what I want because he can't think of anything. And then I refuse to tell him. His family relies entirely on gift lists. It's a tradition in their family, so I guess it's kind of special to them, but IMO it totally takes the fun and surprise out of it. And then we have to act all surprised and excited on Christmas morning.
One of the things I really like about shopping for gifts is that I can look for something that the person wouldn't think to get for themselves...and that gift won't ever be on the gift list!

I only want one thing for Christmas: a replacement bottle of my Chanel "Coco" perfume. I accidentally dropped my almost-full bottle on the bathroom floor a couple weeks ago and it smashed to smitherines. :(
I miss dabbing it on me, however my bathroom smells divine.

I'm thinking about asking for a video IPod. DH has one of these, and has had it for almost a year! He absolutely loves it, has his whole music collection on it, and hasn't used 1/2 of the space! We got rid of our 300-disc CD changer and use the IPod exclusively, plus he takes it to work wherever he'll be by himself -- downloads podcasts, etc! Wouldn't be without it!
(I've lost 50 lbs and am on the verge of going from plus sizes to misses! ). Wow! Congratulations! I hope you get the gift certificate, and enjoy buying all new stuff! From the skin out... :D

We've started relying on gift lists, because DH is clueless about the style of clothes I wear, and I really don't need any more jewelry! He never buys exactly what's on the list, though, and I can never guess which tangent he's going to follow... We've had to go to lists for DD's, because they live far from us, and we have no clue what they would like to have... The way our lists work is that they put down anything and everything they could possibly want, and we pick and choose... Their birthdays are close to Christmas, too. Even at 29 and 31, they still get a Santa gift -- one which is either too expensive, or something Mom and Dad don't approve of... ;) DD1's partner's family gives only gift cards from various stores... talk about not surprised...
GingerPow, I hope you get your wish!

RobinC - Congratulations! Here's a toast to the misses' sizes. I'm asking for the same. It's too hard to have someone buy me bottoms...but all my XL and L tops, shirts, sweaters are too big. So, Ms are going on my list.
My sister works part-time at a bookstore, so I'm putting Jeff Galloway's "Marathon" and Jennifer Chiaverini's "The Christmas Quilt" on my list.
Other than that, I'd like Santa to leave a cute man near my fireplace - and he could bring me the jewelry LakeMartinGirl doesn't want :D .

My DBF's family relies on lists as well. It's a big deal to go "off list" I agree, it takes the fun and surprise out of it. It also starts to feel like getting/receiving an obligatory requested item rather than giving a gift to someone you care about.
LakeMartinGal - I don't need anymore jewelry either. I don't wear a lot and I'm very attached to the pieces I have. I wear the same diamond earrings every day, the same 2 rings, and same watch. I'm very happy with them all.
This year I found a great garden sign for my Mom that says "Hummingbird Crossing" - she gets a lot of hummingbirds in her garden. I also found her a cute garden gnome - she collects them, but not the dorky ones. ;) I can't wait to give them to her! It's fun to shop for someone who has not supplied a specific list and I care about. :)

DS#1 and #3 got them for Christmas last year and they love them...one of them usually has it attached at all times! They have the 80GB and that's where they store all their music. DS#1 is more prone to downloading videos and tv shows than #3. DS#3 has quite a walk to classes though so loves that he can listen to what he wants when he wants!

3. Nice diamond earrings
4. Leather recliner rocker
5. a BIG Truck or a Denali
6. A new Bible
Clothes
Money
I am not very materialistic, so this should do for this year.
And these (http://www.footwearetc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=122-35114) shoes.
My DH and I haven't exchanged gifts at Xmas atime in years. We like to surprise and treat each other throughout the year when the spirit moves us and we see something the other might like. If I want or need something for me I buy it and vice versa. :)
When we did exchange gifts at Xmas we only gave very general ideas and only if the other asked. I know this sounds harsh but I think handing someone a very specific list of stuff you want takes away from the whole meaning behind a gift- someone giving you something they thought you would like. I know, I know, husbands in particular want very specific ideas because most don't have a clue what to get their wives/SO. :D
I am only speaking for me when I say I would find that takes the fun away from the whole concept. Again if there is something I specifically want I will buy it -other than that I like a gift to come from the heart and not a list.
I am now ducking...... :D

I already got my Xmas gifts this year....
A visit from Maureen!!! and a new bathroom!! Who could ask for anything more??? :D :D
I have taken to making big, generic lists just because I already have so much and I am picky, and really, I don't want much, and we live in a tiny house so I don't have room for much. Not to mention I know how terribly difficult it is to shop for someone when you have no idea what they want (and who already really has basically everything), and the stress of finding "just the right thing" and the stress of watching them open it and hoping they love it or don't already have it, etc. I hate that.
So throughout the year, as I normally go to buy things for myself (ala Maureen above), I instead write it down on a list. I keep a large list, not with the expectation of getting everything (although I will say I got almost everything on my birthday list this year! ), but it helps people buy something for me they know I'll like, and with a really big list, it's still a surprise as to which things I will get.
It really makes me feel terrible when someone gets me something I don't like or can't use and then it sits somewhere in the basement or the attic, unloved and unused. I think about how hard that person worked for the money to buy that thing, and the thought and effort that went into choosing it for me, and I just feel terrible when I don't love it and use it. So I'd rather make a list - then every time I pull out that cutting board or cookbook or pan, I think about who gave it to me and I love it even more! :D
And for the record, I don't care to get jewelry! I know I'm a weirdo that way. I'd MUCH rather have a vacation than any kind of jewelry.
Oh face it Grace- all you care about are things.
You can stop sending me the hints about the Al Franken doll too.
:D :D
(we are even more obnoxious in real life trust me)
You are missing out on the great Nigella signature I now have. :)
And as usual you are make me think Grace- it is true that I wouldn't want someone spending their hard earned money on something I will never use.
Oh well no one buys me gifts anyway. :( ;)

I know what you mean Kay. DH has given me beautiful jewelry over the years, especially watches. There seem to be certain favorite peices that I continually wear, and while I wouldn't refuse any pretty-sparkley things, I don't need anymore either.
I'm not in the Liz Taylor category of jewelry, but I do like what I have. I don't know what it is with me lately, I just don't want any more "stuff." I'm in a streamlining mode these days.
That bottle of "Coco" perfume aside, I'm longing for non-material things. Time to read a book, take a nap, get out and walk for an hour, spend more time with my buddies - I'm not sure I can ask Santa for those.
I think as one gets older the 'streamlining" process kicks in.
Now when I buy anything(Okay not underwear! :D ) I am thinking about how much my daughters will enjoy it (or they better) when I give it to them in a few years.
I hope you get all your wishes this year GP- you can make them happen!

Rob surprised me with a Video Ipod for my birthday in September. I love it. He bought the extended warranty with it, so I'm not worried about anything going bad. I've loaded all my CDs and bought a few albums and several individual songs--700 songs altogether. I haven't even begun to fill the Ipod up.
Rob also bought me the Itrip so we could listen to the Ipod in the car. Around Chicago, it doesn't work too well because it requires an empty FM frequency. Sometimes there is interference from other stations. It works fine in our town, just not around the city.
The Ipod couldn't be easier to use. The hardest part is figuring out the scrolling. Once you get that down, it couldn't be easier. I love mine!
I have a wishlist on Amazon. Through the year as I think of something I'd like, I put it in my list. My in-laws insist on a list, and Rob looks at it occaisionally. I also keep a record of all the cookbooks I'd like in there. :p

Mostly I want the re-painting finished by Christmas. The first painter was not a real painter apparently, as he put latex over oil-base. Now there is a whole lot of scraping going on, and a real painter will start in a week or so.
Other than that, I want a good cubic zirconia necklace. I am not into real diamonds since I'd rather have the money in the bank. But I do like sparklies. :p
I also want a framed watercolor by one of the local artists, Glenda Rogers. But I want to pick it out myself.

Oh, and I'd like a certain man, too...
Yeah, that covers it.
Ditto, only I dont' have a certain man in mind. But I would like one with certain qualities, someone who could be DF/DH material, not just a BF.
I'd also like a job.
But in things, I would like a nice spice cabinet (nothing in particular in mind now - just don't want it to look cheap) that I think I will ask my dad to buy since he's retired, likes cooking and furniture and has time to find one. I'd like cake decorating equipment and possibly some baking sheets and muffin tins (need to look again - not sure if they have gotten lost in my two moves in the last year). If I have a job, I'll ask my mom to take me clothes shopping (she gets a discount at Macy's) for some nice work and after work clothes. But if I don't, I'll ask her to PLEASE not buy me any clothes because 1)I don't have a job to wear them to and don't know what kind of dress code I would have at a future job and 2)don't have that many places to wear cool clothes now because of lack of funds.
I do need to be specific though or else my mom will just buy anything...and lots of stuff that I can't use or don't want. I just hate that money is being wasted and that stuff is cluttering my house. She will not have a problem with this - she loves to buy anything since she gets a rush out of buying stuff.
I take back what I said about not liking lists with specific items on it. It really does make sense and is very practical.
I don't give or get very many presents at Christmas (by choice!) so I guess that was my intial thought.
I only buy for my daughters and actually give them mostly money so they can buy their own things.
I do love the food part of the holiday so I am not a complete scrooge.

For a long time, we kept the odd things that people gave us for Christmas, so as not to 'hurt their feelings.' Then, a friend said to me that she would be offended if we kept something we didn't like! Her family has made it ok to return/exchange anything!
The person who gave it (hopefully) wanted you to have something you liked, and if they didn't hit the spot with the gift they chose, they wanted you to change it. I have to say, this made a lot of sense to us, so we have followed suit. If, for instance, my DD gives me a sweater she thinks is great, but it isn't suitable for someone my age, imo, I thank her, tell her how nice it was for her to find something she thought I'd like, and ask her where she bought it, and would she like to go with me to exchange it... no feelings hurt! Even with far-away family, I send an envelope with receipts in it, just in case... and that way, no one has to feel guilty about things that take up space in the house, but are unloved... The only exception is hand-made/homemade items. :p

Be careful what you wish for! I'd give anything to have a 4 year old in my house! :p
And sorry, while not in Houston these days I don't even have a country bumbkin to offer up!
Thanks for the forewarning...seeing as I'm a divorced single mom...I'm well aware of the missteps those silly boys can cause!!! :D But, still it would be nice to have someone to hang out with, enjoy a good meal with, go to the movies with, sleep with... :D Let me know if you find some good ol' boy for me out there in the sticks!

DH and I just bought each other our Christmas gifts tonight. Now we have to wait a month and a half to open them. He got the Complete Calvin and Hobbes in two (huge) volumes. I got the complete Jeeves and Wooster on dvd. Can't wait to open them!

I think this might be the ONLY time I'll say thank goodness for drunken text messages as that is what got us started talking again. :p :p
LOL Robyn, that's how my DH and I finally started dating after years of working together!! We even did a toast at our wedding to the guy who signed us up for Blackberries; and I danced to "Let's Give Em something to Talk About" to the other guy who was spreading rumors we were dating before we even were. Good luck with the new guy!!
OK sorry for the hijack, back to your regularly scheduled thread.
I want an Ipod and docking station to play in my shop as my current CD player 'ate' the Grey's Anatomy CD and is stuck playing only that!! But I think I'm getting it for my B-day which is in early Dec and coincides with DH's yearly bonus... :D

I wouldn't refuse a La Cruset dutch oven or gift certificates for clothes (I've lost 50 lbs and am on the verge of going from plus sizes to misses! :D).
Congratulations RobinC! I just lost 57 pounds and recently moved into the Misses sizes and am THRILLED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's been years since I've bought anything for myself that didn't end in a "W".
I would like my bathrooms redone and some landscaping but I doubt very seriously that I'll get any of that
So, I'll ask for a few cookbooks, a new food scales and microwave oven and be done with that. I automatically get my favorite perfume, music, books and clothes so I don't even have to ask.

And I SO didn't think I was getting it but today was my birthday and :D first of all he WRAPPED it which is a first :D a beautiful BOSE docking station!! I am happily loading up CDs now onto my PC to synch to the iPod and play in the shop!! What a lucky girl I am.

My husband (of 21 years) had a severe stroke last December. He still is unable to speak (doesn't even know his name or mine), has limited comprehension (doesn't know his ABCs, 123s, etc.) and has limited use of the right side of his body. Before this, he was a well-published scientist. This past year, I have been his sole caregiver.
A former co-worker of my husband's called today and wants to take him Christmas shopping to get me a gift. What a nice gesture (and difficult task)! My husband always looked forward to buying Christmas gifts. I am now at a complete loss as to anything materialistic I would want. I'm trying to think of something so that his friend can steer him in the right direction. Oh how life changes!
Just a general post to give a hug to your loved ones... you don't realize what you have until you no longer have it.
Editing to say: What I'd really like for Christmas (and in the coming years) is to get life back to normal as much as possible. I used to love to cook (I can't tell you how organized my CL recipes are!). This past year has been mostly frozen (purchased) entrees, junk food, etc. We used to love to entertain (all details seemed to be to perfection)... now I couldn't imagine hosting even the smallest get-together). Hopefully next season, I can get back in the swing of things!
Best Wishes....

....
I'm so sorry for your struggles and hope that the situation improves for you soon. Hugs.
That said, I really get frustrated when these types of threads turn into "be grateful for what you have" threads. It assumes that we are NOT grateful, and I can assure you that (at least in my instance) that is certainly not the case.
My DH has my endearing gratitude forevermore. This is a man that gave me the choice to stay home with the kids; then gave me the choice to take a couple of college classes; then seeing my interest encouraged me to continue taking classes (and smilingly paid the full tuition). My DH is my hero in so many ways - I cannot even begin to imagine what my life would be like without him. He knows very well how I feel about him. I tell him and show him every day. That man is well loved. :) :)
I'm not trying to be pissy - hopefully it hasn't come out like that.

I just wanted you to know how your story has touched me. I'll take your advise and continue to remind myself to be grateful for the life I have today. I'm sending positive thoughts and prayers your way.
Merry Christmas.

Freddy,
I have been having a rough day today with my kids...reading your post made me stop and think of how lucky I am to have them and to have my DH to help on difficult days. I am so sorry that you and your husband are going through such trying times...I send you both my best wishes for his complete recovery. Take good care of yourself! Hope you have a happy and peaceful Christmas.
I am getting a new handbag from Anthroplogie for Christmas, one that I have been eyeing for a long time and it finally went on sale, plus I asked for books and perfume.
Hope you all get the presensts you want this year!

I, for one, appreciated your words on this thread. I didn't take your post as an admonishment. You sounded more wistful to me. Especially as we get into the fever-pitch of Christmas prep, it never hurts to step back and remember what really is important. I just want you to know that I have taken your words to heart and just e-mailed my husband to tell him how much I appreciate him and love him. We've been crazy-busy and haven't had much time to see each other the last few days. Thanks for taking the time to say what you did, and I hope you get your Christmas wish.
As far as my present under the tree, I really, really, really want some nice kitchen tongs and a weekend away w/ my husband!

Freddy, I've been thinking about your post since you posted it this weekend. I don't think its really possible for us to be as grateful as we should be for all we have, and it never hurts to be reminded. Merry Christmas to you. May your wishes for the next year come true.

Well, you could say something like 'Freddy, I'm sorry. My post was cold and insensitive.' Just another option, since you seem to feel at a loss for words...
I found your post to be very moving Freddy and you posted in entirely the right thread- you simply stated what you want for Christmas.
I wish you all the best-you sound like a very strong and compassionate person.

First of all, I would like my husband's ex-wife to get her hands out of his wallet. He pays his child support on time (and still spends a ton on his kids), she now wants MORE and as it turns out, she makes more than he does! So back off, please?
Also - I would like my ex-husband to be able to find a job. He's been out of work since the first of May. Before that we was on medical disability when he had to have quintuple bi-pass surgery, instead of the angioplasty he was scheduled to have. After six months of being on disability, he went back to work for three days and then was let go. Cruel. (Does anyone know if that's even legal??)
I want my best friend's son to stay safe in Afganistan so he can come home and see his wife, his new baby daughter and his 2 year old son. Ideally, I would like to see all our overseas troops come home safe and sound and soon!
Other than those things, I just want my family to have a good time, enjoy each other's company and the silly gifts we buy for the grab bag, and all the good food we throw together. I want my kids to appreciate all the gifts they receive and to thank the giver personally.
And I would like to have 2007 be a very happy, healthy and successful year for each and every one of us!

Debie,
DH got a video iPod last year for Christmas and loves it. That said, it's not great for exercise, if you intend to use it for that. DH started running with me in the spring, and it's pretty bulky to carry on your belt or an armband for such a high-impact sport. So we ended up getting him a 1G Nano to use for running and working out, and he uses his video iPod mostly for travel. For our trip to China last summer, he bought a bunch of seasons of Alfred Hitchcock Presents and South Park  to keep him entertained on the 13-hour flight.

I asked my kids for the new ipod shuffle (the one that clips onto your shirt). I figure I can't lose it if it's clipped on!!!
DH & I are going on a Caribbean cruise in Feb. so we aren't spending a lot on each other but we did buy a turntable that you can play your records on & download them to your computer & convert them to MP3's. It has software that will fix all the scratches (don't ask me how, I'm a technospaz!) so now we'll be able to get out all the records that have been collecting dust in the cabinet & enjoy the music again!!
I'm also asking for a little less snow this winter... c'mon, we really don't need 180" again this year!!!;)

DH bought it online at: www.x-tremegeek.com. The item # is 131 0638 & it's called "ION USB Turntable". It's $139. Not too pricey...
I'd link it, but like I said before, I'm a technospaz & there's nobody home right now to tell me how to do it!!
Hope this helps!!

We are also in the beginning stages of taking bids for a landscaping job of our front yard. We are going with a Mediterranean theme since we are in San Diego.
An update on landscaping job. Demolition occurred on 12/7 and forms for new walkways and driveway were formed 12/10. Stamped concrete poured 12/11. Concrete is stamped to look like mortared in flagstones. Real flagstones were just a bit out of our budget.
They are trying to get done before Christmas and so far the weather has really cooperated. Woo Hoo!! :D
