View Full Version : How can I get the plastic taste out of my water bottle?

I bought a Fuel Belt for running - the style with the 4 7-oz plastic bottles.

I love this thing since the water doesn't bounce up and down while you're running but the plastic bottles have totally flavored the water that I put in and not in a good way!

I've run them through the dishwasher but they still make the water taste awful. I don't even normally taste the difference between tap water and spring water so you can imagine how bad this is to make me notice! It even makes me not want to drink water when I'm running.

Any ideas to "season" the plastic bottles?

Loren - I hope you get some good replies. I went through my whole marathon training with the Fuel Belt and never had a problem with this so I wonder if they've changed something? Good luck!

I'm not sure there is a way, but I would also like to know if there is. My kids won't drink out of these bottles for that reason. We just buy the 16 oz water bottles at Costco instead of filling our own.

DW and I have always had good luck putting about a tbsp (or more) of baking soda in new water bottles and filling them with hot water and let them sit overnight. Then drain and rinse and see if that doesn't help. :)

I've never had this problem with my Fuel Belt bottles at all. I used to have it w/my bike water bottles. I wasn't able to get rid of the plastic taste, but switched brands and started using Polar Bottles. They have a liner inside the bottle to keep them colder & prevent funky tastes. It works wonderfully. Unfortunately, I've never seen anything like this for Fuel Belts.

Good luck!

I will try the baking soda idea!!

Any other ideas, please keep them coming - I have a feeling it's going to take a couple of things to make this go away.

What a timely thread! My DH bought a new Sunbeam water cooler dispenser and after running 3 jugs of water through it, the plastic taste from the storage tank is still in the water.

I tried emptying it and running water with a little vinegar through it then rinsing. Still tastes like plastic. I told my DH if that taste is still there at the end of jug #4, we're getting rid of it and buying a G.E.

This is the second Sunbeam dispenser we have had - I have not bought either of them - and I informed DH I do not want another Sunbeam water dispenser. There is always an issue with them.

I'm going to try the baking soda idea that Hammster suggested. If that doesn't work - out it goes!

I don't know how big those jugs are, but you will probably need more than the tbsp I mentioned for a smaller water bottle. Heck, dump the whole box in there. :D

These are the 5-gallon jugs - so far 15 gallons of water has flowed through still with that nasty taste remaining. I'll find the industrial strength box and dump that in!

Great news! I wrote to the Fuel Belt company asking for advice. They wrote back and said they had a big problem with that with a few of their shipments, but they had no way of knowing which ones unless the customer came forward.

So they're sending me 4 new bottles! Yippee!!!!

That's great news. Having been on the company side of a recall (actually 2, caused by our manufacturers) for the last month and half I know how frustrating it can be. I'm glad they are taking care of you.

I love my Fuel Belt, but now I'm even more excited to hear about your good customer service experience! Thx for letting us know.
