I didn't see the picture, but I will say I'm I am a size 0. I'm just very tiny, always have been, probably always will be!

My DD was a size 0 for her first 2 years in high school. Now, as a senior, she is a size 4. We are a petite family but I don't think I EVER was a size zero... ;)

My niece is a size zero and is a beautiful girl. She won't be a zero forever, but she doesn't look skinny. She has size 5 feet and just doesn't take up much room! Ah, to be 17 again! :D

To answer your question, NO! ;)

I've been tall and thin my whole life, but I think at my skinniest (college years) I was a 2 and not a 0. I am small boned already, and so I can't imagine how rail-thin I'd have to be to get into a 0. I'm already underweight for my height and am a small size 4. I think the celebs that have gotten SO skinny look terrible --Keira Knightly (sp? too lazy to check) comes to mind. She's beautiful young woman, but as skinny as she is now, she looks a little strange to me.

It all depends on the person, I think. Eva Longoria is probably a zero and she looks healthy.

I wear a 0 if shopping at Ann Taylor or ATLoft, but a 2 at the Gap and a 1 at Old Navy. I'm slim but not wasting away. In fact, DD was poking fun at my round tummy just this morning.

Isn't today's sizing kind of screwed up, too, compared to years ago? I have some old clothing of my mother's... and she was slimmer than I am... it's size 6 and is snug around my waist. So it's all relative.

Wondering what the original picture was... I'm guessing maybe Nicole Ritchie or some-such celeb.

Sizing is TOTALLY screwed up. I was in Old Navy the other day, and I picked up a sweater. The XS, which is what I've always worn, was HUGE on me. So, once again, they've increased their sizing and introduced a XXS, which is now what I wear, when I can find it  which is rare.

Technically, I'm smaller than a size zero. But like memartha said, I'm slim, but I'm not wasting away. And I also have size 5 feet.

Absolutely. In the 1950s, my mom did some runway modeling for local stores, to earn a little extra cash. She was a size 12 at 5'8", and thin as a rail (but healthy; just really slender). She was probably what they now would call a 4. Now, a recent newspaper article on the subject was discussing how a 12 is considered "plus-size", and a 10 is probably on its way to entering the "plus" category. What's next, size -2 and -4 b/c of all the celebrities and supermodels falling below a 0?

The number on the tag depends on the brand of the clothing too. Vanity sizing is common. I read an article about a new size-the sub-zero.

I was a 0 till my late 20's. I don't think I could go back without starving. Not worth it. I love food too much!

Back in her day Marilyn Monroe was a 1950's size 12. From looking at her pictures I'd think she'd be a 4-6 in todays clothes.

DD#2 is 15, barely 5' tall and a size 00. She is healthy, not stick skinny and has a healthy appetite. I wish she wore a larger size because the only places I can find this teensy size charge ridiculous prices.

DH's grandmother was just under 5' - never weighed more than 110 pounds and that was at full term pregnancy. I think DD gets the genetics from her.

When girls starve themselves to be unnaturally thin it is tragic, and a sad commentary on how screwed-up and cruel society's viewpoint is regarding what constitutes 'beautiful.' I look at Nigella Lawson and just marvel at how gorgeous she is.

At 5'8", I think I'd tip over if I was a size 0. Nope, I'd rather be my healthy body weight than starve myself!

Well, kind of. When I get to my goal, I will fit into some of my clothes that are size 0. But like others have said, sizing is all screwed up. I have been thinking that I will need to evaluate my goal more closely when I get closer. I am 4'11" and a few pounds make a lot of difference for me. I want to make sure that I have enough curves and that my face doesn't look too thin. I were a size 6 shoe.

I do agree sizing is off. DD is 5'10, weighs 130 and wears a size 3. When I was her age I was 5'8" weighed 110 and still wore a 5-7.

Not again, thank you.

I'd like to get back into a size six, though. :( That was all right, though it still took a bit more obsessive eating and working out than I'd REALLY prefer.

It's all in the bones. Someone who has a tiny cross-section anyway can perfectly well be a size 0 and be healthy. Me? With my eighteen-inch-wide shoulders and 34-inches-round ribcage? I looked like an unwrapped mummy. Same goes for certain celebrities -- Renee Zellweger, for instance, and Minnie Driver -- they're both big-boned, too, and thin as they are lately, it doesn't suit 'em.

Don't get me started on size inflation. When I was in my 0 days, I did a lot of vintage shopping; all the glam fifties cocktail dresses I bought were size 12.

I am 5-6 and wear cloth between XXS and size 2. It always depends where I shop at. Stuff at Old Navy seems bigger than stuff at American Eagle to me.

I have gained some weight (2lbs or so) since I started culinary school, probably just b/c i am not used to those crazy amounts of butter we use all the time. I am not looking forward to Baking & Pastry - everyone I know who took that class gained like 8-10lbs in 11 weeks because you bake and eat crazy amount of cakes/cookies/breads

Gosh - and here I was feeling good about myself by going from a size 22 to a size 14 - of course I'm almost 6' and weigh 165 pounds now not the 225 I did weigh. :(

Even at my smallest in high school I NEVER wore a size 0 - with size 10 feet trust me, you don't get to wear the skinny stuff.

This is so true and something I have to remind myself every time I go shopping and see all the tiny sizes. I'd have to get down to about 80 pounds to wear a size 0!

You should still feel good about yourself. Good job on your weight loss! :)

I'm 5'7", weigh 145-150, and wear a size 10 (some 8s). I have a medium frame and wide shoulders. If I go below an 8, I look sickly. In a 6, I start to look dead. I'm healthy at a size 10, and I'm thin.

I don't think I could be a size 0. Even if I starved all the muscles off my bones, my skeletal structure isn't small enough to be a 0.

I was a size zero, but I have a small frame and I am only 4'11. I also have kid-sized feet.

Now the sizes are all screwed up so I have NO idea what size I wear ever since they closed Petite Sophisticate.

So yeah it depends on your build and when you are short like me a few pounds will put you over to the next size. Esp when you carry your weight in your stomach area like me.

I'm wearing a size 0 top today, but it's from Chico's.

Since they only have a few sizes, I guess it doesn't count. :o

To answer the question, no.

I don't think clothing size reflects anything these days.
Todays size 4 was a "real" size 6 about 5 or 8 years ago and it was a size 12 about 20 years ago.
Clothing mfg. simply make bigger clothes and label them smaller so women who are foolish enough to think "a size" on the tag makes it more than it is will buy it.

I wish clothing were all "small, medium and large" or waist size measured like men's clothing.
Rip out the tag if it bugs you and buy something that fits well and you are comfortable in.

sorry---still jet lagged and feeling a need to rant :(

I wish designers would listen and learn from your statement! I hate taking doubles of pants (especially jeans) into the dressing room because some designers are generous with their sizes and some are not.

As for the question asked, part of me wants to be in my size zeros again, but part of me understands that when I was in a zero I was definitely not eating correctly. I didn't realize such a simple question could bring up so many insecurities about how I feel in my body right now.

Oh Lord! This is tragic! Young women have been brainwashed into believing that emaciated/skinny = beautiful.

Here is what beautiful looks like:

In tops i am a size 0 at Ann Taylor. Size 4 in pants. I'm 5'7", and probably a little chubby around the waist right now since i haven't been able to exercise much for a couple years due to some injuries. I do, however, have tiny, tiny bones.

But just to show you how screwed up sizes are, at American Eagle, I barely squeeze into a size Large T-shirt. I guess American Eagle does not want medium-sized or larger women to wear their clothes, which i think is crap.

I agree the photo Gumbeaux posted is disgusting, but it's actually been photoshopped. Here's a link to a Web site with the original photo, and the photoshopped one.

Wow that photo is gross - glad to see it isn't real. Besides, that altered photo does NOT represent a size 0 (especially in todays terms). She would be much smaller than that.

Mmm...no. I'm a size 0 and trust me, I do NOT look like the photoshopped pictures, thanks. Anything smaller than that can be found in the cemetary, I believe. Or possibly a hospital.

I'll agree that sizes are getting larger. For example, in high school I was a size 2 or 4 at Express. Now, 20 pounds heavier (ok, when I just haven't had a baby!) I'm still a size 4 there. No way in heck they are the same size 4.

I also wish women's pants and skirts would come in waist sizes. It would be SO much easier. I was just shopping for something that fit for a party since I still have about 20 pounds of baby weight to lose. I found things that fit in 6, 8 and 10. That's just insane. Of course, I DID buy the size 6 skirt. :p

If this is in response to my post then I want to clarify because I just realized that what I wrote could be taken differently than I meant it. I meant to say that she would be smaller than a size 0, not that she would have to be smaller to be a size 0. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

I also am small (5' 0" 100lbs) so I know that she is way smaller than a size 0!!

Yep...I'm thin too and small boned....but not at all like the picture. I'm also shorter and weigh more than the average model. I'm a 6 or an 8 (a 4 at some stores) but I'm also 5'7"

It bothers me, however, that it's okay for people to talk about how awful people look when they're "too thin". It's remarkably difficult to gain weight for some of us...and of course, when we do gain it goes exactly where we want it  :D

DH works in a department made up of a large number of men from age 18-65. About a year ago I asked many of them to indulge me and tell what they found physically attractive in a woman. Some of the phrases that were used most: "Soft curves, really big bosom, nice round a$$ and something to grab hold of." Hey...that's what they said. :D

I *specifically* asked if they found rail thin women to be attractive and none did. So, *who* are women starving themselves for or trying to impress? Several men did happen to say that rail thin women reminded them of adolescent boys.

After hearing what I feel were truthful replies, I smile knowing I was right all along to just be the healthiest I can be and not worry over numbers. ;)

(For those of you that are *naturally* rail thin, that's an entirely different issue. You're not putting your health at risk to impress anyone and, obviously, your genes are dictating an acceptable weight for you.)

That would be great. then i could order clothes off the internet. no point now - it's such a crap shoot and therefore a waste of shipping costs.
