Should I return the fresh - or is safe to tuck in the freezer until next week and then take it out and defrost?

If I were you, I would return the fresh one.

Called the Butterball hotline - and was told that these "fresh" birds will be safe in a cold fridge @ 40 degrees until Thanksgiving. That is how they are held at the stores. Sigh. The first trip to the supermarket with my two boys under two this morning was thrilling enough.

If your fridge space is at a premium but you have freezer space, I just thought I'd mention that I have frozen fresh turkeys a couple of times for a week or two and noticed no deterioration in quality of the cooked turkey.
