I just started taking karate lessons this week and love it. Is there anyone else here who is into karate and can give a newbie some tips?

Good for you Julia! I took Tae Kwon Do for 2 years and really loved it. My checkbook suffered, and I had to quit but... Here are some things you should think about.
Don't be too hard on yourself when you are just starting out, the moves are really hard, and with time and practice you will get better and better. The feeling of accomplishment you get when you master a move is so great!!
Try not to compare yourself to others in your class. Every one has different experience and abilities. I had to tell myself every time not to watch the teenagers who were so much more flexible than me!
Try to take as much from your classes as you can. Use the time to take a little vacation from your life and your worries, an hour at a time. Enjoy it!

Thanks dana, yes, I've learned after 2 classes not to be too hard on myself. I consider making it through the class a major accomplishment and I actually leave the class feeling very satisfied and happy http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
It's such a great feeling and I'm finding that the relaxation effects last long beyond the class and it's flowing into my personal life.
I had a funny thought the other night - I'm happily married, but if a single woman wanted to meet men, that would be the place to be - guys definitely outnumber women in these places.

Haha that's one of the reasons my friend and I joined the studio! There's a Starbucks right next door and we were enjoying a frappacino and all these cute guys were going in for class. We had been discussing signing up anyway but that kind of sealed the deal.
Anyway, all the cute boys were either too young or married. Of course my friend wound up dating one of our instructors, but I didn't meet anyone. Oh well. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
