Before I buy a new gadget I always spend a considerable amount of time "researching". On this forum, I came across some great threads with website addresses when I bought a digital camera last year. So...can anyone direct me to a good source for information before purchasing a new computer? I'm considering a laptop, but am not certain. I mainly use my computer for playing (e-mails, recipes, travel/vacation planning, etc). I do not store my digital images on it, nor do I do banking/on-line bill paying.
I've always had IBM, but will consider MAC. I heard they have a new laptop that runs both systems.
Where should I start? Consumer Reports?
TIA

Personally, I would just call Dell (so says the girl making her first post on her brand new Dell laptop!) They'll get you set up. I would NOT consider anything made by HP or Compaq, to me those computer seem to have a lot of problems.

First decide whether you want a MAC or a PC.
MAC's now can run Windows software but would be booted up in that operating system -- i.e. they don't run both systems simultaneously. The dual functionality is really aimed at people who want the better user experience of a MAC but need to access very specificalized software applications on a limited basis. Most ordinary home users would never need the Windows capability since most software functions are either available on MAC or are written for MAC and PC -- i.e. all of Microsoft Work programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
If you want specific advice on why I personally think MAC's are better for home users who just want to use their computer for graphics, music, internet, Word documents, Quicken, I would be happy to discuss further. Except for certain specialized software applications (and you know if you use these) and some game availability, there is nothing that a MAC doesn't do better and easier -- with virtually no worry about hacks, viruses, worms because so far the hackers haven't bothered since their aim is to make life miserable for as many people as possible.
MAC's also run on LINUX which is considered more inherently stable than DOS and since it is open source software (Linux), it has all the advantages of being worked on by a vast community of software engineers rather than the limited proprietary research done by Microsoft for Windows.
As to PC computers, I believe CR did a rating in terms of ratings so that would be a good place to start. Also cnet has lots of computer reviews.

I start with Consumer Reports for just about any purchase. I own a Dell and have enjoyed it, although I just had to have my harddrive replaced (after 2 years). They were great though, I was still under warrenty and I had a new one within 2 days. But if you do your research on C.R. you should be able to find a better deal at the Black Friday sales! Happy Shopping!
