My virus software will evidently no longer be free in January. I had a message pop-up yesterday about it ending in Janurary 2007. I went to their website and it isn't listed there anymore just trial versions of the ones you pay for. I liked the one I was using too. Any good suggestions for a free one? Is there such a thing anymore?

Ad Aware and Spybot are two that were recommended to me. I've used them and the only thing they haven't been able to get rid of is Surf Sidekick. Guess I have to find a professional for that.

I don't think AdAware and Spybot are true anti-virus though. I think the are anti-spyware and that you should run an anti-virus as well but someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I am unaware of any free anti-virus software.

You are correct, those are spyware utilities, not anti-virus tools. Search for AVG anti-virus. They have a good free one for home use.

I've been using AVG for quite awhile and like it. I think I even got a pop up the other day about it being discontinued in January... but that is only because they are releasing a newer version. Check out their website - it is great software for being free!

Two that were recommended to me by a computer guy who came to fix my PC last week were AVG and Anti-Vir. Anti-Vir comes out of Germany (I think the company is Avira), and that's the one that I decided to try. Seems to be working well for me.

My sons both recommend Avira, they are computer nerds ;) , and I've been running it for over a year.

Avira (http://www.free-av.com/)

It updates daily and then has a window promoting the version you buy but the free one works just fine for me!

To be clear here, I am running AVG the free version. I finally got to the right website and downloaded the version I need to replace 7.1, they are discontinuing that in Janurary 2007. I don't remember that being mentioned but I was only half awake when I seen it yesterday while checking my email. I haven't installed it yet and I am glad there is more than one free one out there still. I heard of the Avira but haven't tried it.

I've had good success with Clamwin (http://www.clamwin.com/).
