Have you seen this new James Bond movie "Casino Royale" yet? As a life long fan of Bond movies, my first crush as a kid was Sean Connery after I saw him in my first 007 movie "Goldfinger" - this is the best Bond movie yet!

I have to admit I went with my DH tonight but didn't expect anything great from this new Bond. I was disappointed when they didn't renew Pearce Brosnan's contract.

I won't give away any of the movie, except to say the locations, scenery and stunts are incredible plus the new Bond (Daniel Craig) reminded both DH and myself of Steve McQueen. You just don't get cooler than that.

My son has been begging me to take him this week, but I was concerned that it was not appropriate. He's 10, and seen all the Bond's except Die Another Day (I just didn't like that one....). What do you think?

Was the new guy good? Bondlike?

I've always been partial to Sean Connery....

Daniel Craig is an amazing Bond!! Closer to the book than the other Bonds that's for sure!

The first chase scene in the movie is amazing! I loved it! Whoever coordinated that is a genius!

But I think the movie fell apart during the Montenegro scenes. Then again I'm not astounded by card games.

Also I don't think the villian was so much villainous as a guy who got himself into a bad situation.

But the movie is worth the ticket price.

I dont know I'm a huge Connery and Brosnan fan. Craig was a little too "raw" for me as a Bond. He was very good and the movie was pretty good, but it was certainly a different portrayal of the character.

Kim, I would say that this movie is fine for a 10-yr-old. Lots of action, but no grisly violence. There are a couple of scenes where Bond is kissing a woman, in a prone position...we know what it will lead to, but maybe a 10 year old wouldn't. They do not show anything inappropriate.

This new Bond is edgy, very different from the slick & sophisticated Bonds we're used to. DH compared the new Bond to Jason Bourne in the Bourne Identity movies. (Very high praise from him, BTW).

No one will ever eclipse Sean Connery. He is the original, definitive 007. I like the new look to this Bond though. I'll bet your son would love the stunts in this one!

We tried to go Friday night; it was playing on a gazzillion screens and was sold out!! DBF will probably catch a matinee today (and buying his ticket online this morning!)

Haven't seen it yet, but I too fell hard for Sean Connery.
I can't imagine anyone EVER replacing him!! ;)

Thanks for your comments. DH wants to take 11YO DS, and asked me to read the Kids in Mind review of it. These reviews list anything that could be objectionable ("a man and woman embrace, we see her nude back" etc.)

Some of the violence seemed very close-up from the descriptions. I am used to the type of violence like "a car hits a building and everything explodes" from Bond, but from this review, it sounded like there were some torture and close up bullet holes, etc. From the review, it sounded like it would be too intense for kids, but if actual parents have seen it and think a 11 YO could see it, that counts for something in my book.

Any other comments on its appropriateness for kids is appreciated!

My kids are teens & 20's now - but I was the mom who had to hear, "Aw mom! Everyone ELSE is allowed to see it!" I tended to scrutinize the movies and t.v. shows I allowed them to watch very closely.

You mentioned a torture scene, and that's one scene I'd object to. It was definitely uncomfortable although it wasn't graphic (no close ups, thank goodness).

I really liked this Bond. Seeing this movie is a little odd, since it takes place at the beginning of his career, but we've come to know and expect so much from 007. Fast cars, beautiful women, amazing chase scenes, but nothing too sci-fi or futuristic about it. I enjoyed it. What annoyed me the entire time was trying to remember what the French word "chiffre" meant. I knew I'd used it very often in French classes ... :P It means number, for any of you who might find yourself in my shoes ...)

I read Kids in Mind as well and was also concerned about that same description about the torture scene. Was it bad? I didn't like the torture scene in Die Another Day and didn't let my sone see that one. From the description this one didn't sound quite as intense, but it's hard to tell without seeing it. Thanks everyone!

Semi-spoiler/description of torture scene below in white-highlight to read.
But it's also a warning for those with kids....

There is a torture scene with a fully nude Bond strapped to a chair.

I thought it was kind of hard to watch.

The bottom of the chair is cut out and he gets his "twig and berries" whipped.

Despite the torture Daniel C looks pretty good nude.

You know what - I apologize for forgetting about the torture scene. Totally slipped my mind. It was intense. KristiB explained it well in her white highlighted description.

We went to the movie today and liked it. My son loved it, but I just liked it. I have to say that I did like this new guy, he works very well as Bond, but he's still not Sean Connery. (I'm a bit partial....). I think he will be even better in the next movie.

As for kids, I think it would depend on the child. My son was fine, although he did hold his ears and cover his eyes during the above mentioned scene. He would have been fine watching it, but I made him as I wasn't sure how bad it would be. There is a lot of killing in the movie, and it is more realistic than the older Bonds, but that is what the newer ones have all been. There is lots of action and my son also really enjoyed the 1st scenes! Drew is here watching me type and wants me to put in that this new Bond actor is "really good... right up there with Connery". He says he was not scared, and next time would not have held his ears. He says go see it! :)

I'm looking forward to the next one (but in the mean time I'll keep myself happy with a good, old fashioned, sleek, sophisticated, You Only Live Twice rental....)

I went to this for DH since he went to Happy Feet for me, so I went in with no expectation of enjoying myself. After the initial long chase scenes were done, I got really into it and enjoyed it. I don't find Daniel Craig particularly good looking, but DH and I both agreed that he was a fantastic Bond. Perhaps the best! We loved it.

Dh and I saw this on opening night and thought it was fantastic. The theatre actually had more kids than adults, anywhere from 7 and 8 year olds and up.

Sean Connery is by far the best but Daniel Craig is hot and I thought he made a fantastic bond. We didn't stop talking about it for a few days and I think I will buy it when it comes out on dvd. I hated Peirce Brosnan as Bond, but I think they were poorly made movies.

I'd say just the opposite; I found him pretty darn hot (understatement) as Bond. For me, he's right up there with Connery. I loved this Bond film and actually would pay to go see it again.

Amen. I never got into the whole uber-slick Brosnan Bond era. I like my 00s a little more rough around the edges. We saw Casino Royale opening weekend and I just loved it, especially the Madagascar opening scene. I also loved the accountant/Bond Girl, who for once had a reasonably appropriate British accent for an educated woman.

We walked out of the theater saying exactly that. I wish I had a home theater - I would love to watch that movie on a huge screen whenever I want to - the scenery of Como, Italy and Montenegro (which is in the Czech Republic) amazed me! So beautiful.

SPOILER in white:
My DH will have to cover his eyes when Bond's Astin Martin crashes - he lamented the crashing of that car the rest of the night, and hoped it was a special effects model!

Actually Montenegro is an independent nation that borders Croatia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Serbia and Albania .

I went a few years ago. If you ever get a chance go while it's still affordable!

The government is trying to turn it into another Monte Carlo. I don't know if it will happen but that area is becoming increasingly popular with tourists

Ditto. This is the first movie in a LONG time I'd be willing to go back to the theater to see again. Best Bond since Connery for sure. And I don't typically go for blondes :D

My favorite part though: he's got a mouth on him- and that chilidsh glimmer he gets in his eye throughout the movie absolutely made me melt!

I love the new, rough around the edges Bond, but unlike Brosnan, Craig's Bond was able to show a sensitive side for once. I just loved the movie and I too would see it again!

For those of you who have seen the movie, who adored the shower scene (that's all I'm giving away)?

Until the other night, I didn't know where on earth (literally) it was. I was trying to figure it out watching the movie. (Googled it when I got home).

You were there Kristi? It must have been breathtaking!

I thought that was one of the hottest movie scenes in a good long while. I guess "hot" is my adjective to describe this movie. . .:)

No Bond has looked as good in a bathing suit, let's put it that way.

We saw the movie Saturday. I thought it was very good; less outrageous technology/gadgetry and more dialogue. Daniel Craig is a great 007. What else has he been in?

I asked my BF if he would ever wear a bathing suit like that, I just got one of those "Don't bet your life on it" looks as a reply. :) I read that Craig worked out something like 5 hrs a day, 6 days a week to get that body.

Daniel Craig is a great 007. What else has he been in?

Most notably he was in "Munich" (and was very good) and a British crime caper movie called "Layer Cake" (which was sort of like the Guy Ritchie movies if you are familar with those). I also think he's done a lot of theater in London.

KristiB
11-28-2006, 05:36 AM
Layer Cake was a good movie!

He was also in Infamous, The Mother, Road to Perdition, and Tomb Raider.

I'm excited because he's going to play Lord Asriel in the His Dark Materials trilogy.

Yes Ginger I've been to Croatia and Montenegro and it is stunning! Great food too!

SEXEEE is my opinion of the new Bond! I think I may have made my husband a little nervous...we were leaving the theater and he asked my opinion. I responded that the movie was just OK, but it was well worth the $9 admission fee just to look at Daniel Craig for 2 1/2 hours! He asked if he needed to dye his hair blond. I think it may take a little more---just remembering those amazing eyes and about 40 pounds of muscle are making me swoon as I type  .

I would go see it again if I didn't thing that my honey would develop some sort of complex!

We saw it Saturday night with my 15 year old son and 16 year old step daughter. They both liked it, but I think my step daughter liked it more. Maybe the "romance" parts got her. I think my son was a bit disappointed that it wasn't more like the older Bond movies he's seen. I thought it was short on gadgets and I missed Q (didn't he pass away some time ago?).

I don't think I would take a 10 year old to see it. I don't think they'd understand the plot and yes, I think the torture scene might be a bit much. Maybe 12 and up.

This is the first movie I've been to in I can't tell you how long (at the theatre). I'd forgotten what fun it is to have that huge screen up there and everything truly larger than life! I think the last one I saw that I really liked was "Cold Mountain". I should probably get out more, right???

On a scale of 1-10 and taking into account the old Bond movies, I'd give this one an 8+. It'll be interesting to see what they do next time around!

DH and I saw this movie last week and loved it! I think, in Daniel Craig, they have finally located a suitable James Bond replacement for Sean Connery. He was amazing! IMHO - I would not take a 10 year old to this movie.

I've been smiling over this thread... DD2 and MIL were together on Thanksgiving, and decided to go see a movie. MIL was all for this one, until she found out that Sean Connery wasn't in it! "Oh, well", she said, "let's see Happy Feet instead!" ;) :D
